Eureka Entertainment to release DER GOLEM; Paul Wegener and Carl Boese’s classic silent horror, as part of The Masters of Cinema Series for the first time on Blu-ray in the UK from a brand new 4K restoration on 18 November 2019, presented with a Limited Edition Slipcase [First Print Run of 2000 copies only].

An iconic early horror masterpiece, Der Golem was Paul Wegener’s third attempt at adapting the Golem character for the big screen. Starring and co-directing with Carl Boese, Wegener crafted one of silent cinema’s most enduring masterpieces.

In the Jewish ghetto in 16th century Prague, Rabbi Low (Albert Streinruck, Asphalt) creates a forbidding clay Golem (played by director Paul Wegener) to protect his people from the tyrannical Emperor Luhois (Otto Gebuhr). Brought to life with a demon spirit and an amulet placed in the center of the creature’s chest, the Golem is a seemingly indestructible juggernaut, performing acts of great heroism. But when the Rabbi’s assistant attempts to control the Golem for selfish gain, it becomes a terrifying force of destruction, rampaging through the ghetto leaving fire and death in its wake.

A landmark film in the horror canon, influencing most notably James Whale’s 1931 adaptation of Frankenstein, Der Golem, wie er in die Welt kam is also a pre-eminent example of German Expressionism, and an important contribution to the golden age of Weimar Cinema. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present the film in its UK debut on Blu-ray from a brand new 4K restoration.

Blu-Ray Special Features:

  • Limited Edition O-Card Slipcase (First 2000 copies)
  • Presented in 1080p from a stunning 4K digital restoration of the original film negatives, completed by FWMS in 2017.

This is a 'must have' edition for my library.
I wish they had included info on the other adaptations that Wegener had created. I realize very little remains of them but even short clips with narration would have been nice.
Regardless, this is a nice package that Eureka is giving us.
Thanks again Paul for bringing this to our attention! :thanks:

happy days. :) another great Eureka! release of a vintage original horror. will go well next to Nosferatu, Cabinet of Dr Caligari, et al. still available via all links in the OP at time of writing, so for those undecided...
love the artwork on the cover, only disappointed that it's the same image on the limited edition slipcase as it is on the amaray and booklet front cover. images for covers under the spoiler, as well as for the back/ credits.
liking the interior artwork. the disc is just a black sticker, which for this release works fine.
finally, the booklet. it's not one of their 90 page specials, but at 28 stapled pages it's still pretty good, with the usual Eureka standard for information, essays, and artwork.
i appreciate that not everyone is into silent horror, or for that matter German expressionism, but... for those with an interest, this is must buy for me. what i haven't mentioned yet is the restoration quality, it's simply excellent. :wow: there's a great before and after video on the extras, and it goes from luridly green at some times to clear black and white. compare the interior image of the amaray above to the old pre-restoration gif below. they have - yet again - done an amazing job on the film itself. top marks!

Realised I missed out on the limited slipcover version of this. Very keen to get hold of a copy, please contact me if you have one you would like to sell or swap for something else, I have a few other sold out releases can swap for.

Would love a slip cased steelbook, please Eureka!?(if you so desire):)
If I remember correctly Eureka have only released one steelbook in a slipcase (November 2012) - THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC (1928):-

Was the first UK slipcased steelbook release several years before anyone else did the same.
