Per Screen Rant:

Despite some ups and downs, Showtime’s Dexter continues to be a ratings hit and critical darling for the subscription network. While certain aspects of the fan-favorite series are less cohesive, and subsequently less entertaining, than others – there’s no doubt the trials, tribulations, and murders of Miami Metro’s “blood guy” continue to captivate audiences.
As a result, it should come as no surprise that Dexter has been renewed for at least two more season arcs – meaning fans will get to enjoy another 24 episodes of watching Michael C. Hall explore the battle between his onscreen counterpart’s growing humanity and ever-present Dark Passenger.

Dexter season 7, alone, was reported to be in jeopardy a little over a month ago – as Hall and his representatives were pushing for $1 million per Dexter episode ($24 million total for two seasons) and Showtime wasn’t interested in going above a combined $20 million total. As we previously reported, even the $20 million figure would make Hall one of the most highly-paid actors on television. However, while the Showtime press release doesn’t (of course) address the actor’s compensation, Hall and the network have worked out a deal – as Dexter has been renewed for two more seasons. According to Showtime president of entertainment, David Nevins:
“The series is bigger than it’s ever been in its sixth season, both in terms of audience and its impact on the cultural landscape. Together with Michael, the creative team on the show has a very clear sense of where they intend to take the show over the next two seasons and, as a huge fan, I’m excited to watch the story of Dexter Morgan play out.”
Deadline caught-up with Nevins following the announcement, who clarified that the network’s negotiations with Hall weren’t nearly as difficult as we might have been led to believe – adding that the team has a plan for a three-year arc (which includes the current season):
“It’s been a pretty simple negotiation, and Michael C. Hall has been incredibly gentlemanly throughout the whole process. The biggest question was: what is the trajectory of the show creatively? And after speaking with (executive producers) John Goldwyn, Sara Colleton and Scott Buck, it became pretty clear that there was a very clear 3-year trajectory. Once we established that, this became a very simple negotiation, which went down pretty quickly.”
While this season of Dexter hasn’t been the series’ strongest narrative showing, there’s no doubt that with a few “kill of the week“ episodes, a number of especially bizarre serial murders, and Hall’s compelling performance as the titular character, season six has (so far) offered a strong continuation of the over-arching storyline.

Finished season 6 on blu-ray about a week ago, holy ****, what a season it was. Best yet, imo.

Are you serious?

I love Dexter but that season was just the worst, that "twist" was just boring and you could see it a mile away before it happend. The seventh season was much better and almost back on track and I hope the eight season continues that road.

What a shame it's ending! This is one of the best shows on tv! I guess they are in danger of it becoming crap, so I guess it's better to bow out on top!

DOOMSDAY!!

DOOMSDAY!!

True, I hope this season turns the stone and maybe, just maybe it becomes as good as the first four season. Like the new guest stars and the fact that it is ending, makes the danger of being caught much higher.

Took a break from my honeymoon-packing tonight to watch the Dexter finale. I can't believe there's no discussion on this! What did everyone think?! I thought...

That it was sad, tragic, yet so absolutely beautiful. Watching Deb pass away ripped out my heartstrings, especially when Dexter took her to sea and let her go into the water. Just heartbreaking. Seeing him take out Saxxon with a pen and then having Quinn and Batista just nod in approval afterward was 100% bad-ass! When Dexter took off into the hurricane, I thought that was epic... like I was watching the finale to a brilliant film. Hannah and Harrison together was touching as was Dexter's goodbye to his son on the phone. And then that final scene with the Dexter score being cut and him staring up at the camera... YES! I know this episode had a lot of haters, but as a Dexter fan since the beginning, I couldn't've been happier. Kudos to the writers of the show and the mesmerizing Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter... and farewell!

I'm still debating the series finale.

I don't know if I agree with the ending. Personally I think he needed to die and Deborah should have been left with Harrison. I mean I read an article and I understand they are saying this is his punishment and his steps to becoming human but seriously he could always decide to go to Argentina. He finally becomes human but had to sacrifice everything to get there, I dunno. And he leaves Harrison with Hannah someone he barely knows. I think he needed to die in the storm.

Also can you explain how he did infact survive. He drives into the hurricane and his boat is destroyed and still survives, Dark Knight Rises Syndrome?!?

Given where it did go, I found it touching what he did for Deborah. Though it was not his first mercy killing. He did serve a special piece of pie. ;)

I will say though I loved how he Killed Saxon and is brought into the interrogation room and they just look at him. Nod and let him go. Cause really they wanted to do it themselves. Quinn even give him a much more knowing look, I think finally realizing who Dexter really is, maybe not the Bay Harbor Butcher, but certainly a killer. I will say it does almost mirror the end of the first season after killing Rudy, in his mind he imagines a parade. He kills Saxon, doesn't get a parade, but does get acceptance.

Interesting article here

Have been unimpressed in general by the last few seasons of Dexter. It had run its course (a bit like most of the US programmes I like). The ending had its ups & downs but ultimately I felt a bit cheated by the time the final credits rolled.

btw Congrats Ken have a great time together, you and Mrs Tridon. :D

I love the finale too, a lot of haters of it but its one of my favourite shows ever and it worked for me. I don't know how to do the spoiler hide thing so I won't say anything else, but I agree with Tridon
