Get ready to turn in your wireless axe, microphone and drum kit for a turntable and a pair of headphones.

That's the word from gaming blog Kotaku (via Eurogamer), which definitively confirms what had long been rumored: "DJ Hero" is indeed coming "later this year," complete with a turntable for "competitively" spinning and mixing tunes.

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick let the news slip during a recent appearance on CNBC, according to Kotaku. Details are still scarce: Kotick is quoted saying that the "DJ Hero" turntable will, indeed, let you "play competitively and spin discs and mix songs," but that's about it for now.

The first "DJ Hero" rumors began swirling almost a year ago, after "Guitar Hero" publisher Activision filed a trademark for the game back in February 2008. The buzz flared up again in September, after anonymous sources confirmed the game (reportedly in development for more than two years) to both Kotaku and MTV Multiplayer.

Check out this Kotaku post from September for details on how the "DJ Hero" wireless controller is (or was, at least) shaping up, along with the early word on visuals (apparently, the distinctive, brightly-colored music blobs will stream around a virtual record, rather than down a guitar neck).

So, what do you think: Will the "Hero" series successfully make the jump from guitars to turntables? And are you ready to give "DJ Hero" a spin yourself?

Seen up close and personal, I was surprised at how fun DJ Hero appears to be.

The idea of taking Konami's Beatmania, a game that I couldn't quite get when I played and didn't really want to, and turning it into something that not only hardcore gamers might enjoy, but anyone, seemed like an overwhelming task. But the inclusion of a sizable, completely original setlist and a complete retooling of the controls gives DJ Hero a fighting chance.

To play the game, you tap the three buttons located on the turntable in time with their corresponding icons as they roll past on a stretched out virtual record on the TV. Occasionally you also have to scratch while holding a button down, jerking the rubber turntable in either direction and at any speed.

While you're doing all of this with one hand, you use the other to fade between tracks on cue and drop in sound effects. The fader has three positions, left, right and center. When the tracks on the virtual turntable move to the right or left you have to follow with the fader. The effects knob essentially works like the whammy bar in Guitar Hero, allowing you to distort the music as it plays at certain times.

Finally, there's a Euphoria button that blinks once you've racked up enough points. The button essentially works like Star Power.

All of this sounds incredibly confusing, but seen in person it doesn't seem so hard to master. No more hard to master, at least, than was Guitar Hero when it first hit the scene.

The game can be played standing up or sitting down, though it looked like it would be easier to play on your feet. That means buying some sort of table that puts the controller at the right height, one of DJ Hero's few obvious drawbacks.

While I'm fairly certain the game is going to be fun to play, the bigger question for a title like this is will it be fun to watch people play. And I'm still not convinced, though there are a few things that will definitely help it.

Because the game has all original music, music you can't find anywhere else, just having it playing on it's own is entertaining. I'm told that you can at any time walk up to the turntable and take over the music, not having to stop it or launch a game. That's another huge plus.

Finally, the inclusion of tracks that let you use the turntable with a guitar, essentially playing both DJ Hero and Guitar Hero at the same time, is a huge win for the title.

Initially, the game will only ship with a handful of titles that will let you do both, but the developers say they will keep an eye on its popularity and release new tracks to support it if people seem to want that.

Just as we speculated, those early shots of the DJ Hero controller weren't showing the whole thing. That was being saved for, what else, an article in Game Informer magazine.

In addition to the turntable, there will be a second, clip-on component, which includes a cross-fader, effects dial, "Euphoria" button (ie star power) and the requisite d-pad and control pad buttons, which are hid tastefully beneath a flip-up cover. Unlike the silver turntable, this pad will come in a muted, metallic gold scheme.

Also revealed in the mag is how the game actually works. It's mostly like Guitar Hero, with notes cascading down the screen towards you, however this time around there are only three notes, with complexity coming from the fact that in addition to hitting those three, you need to have the cross-fader in the right position. Replacing sustained guitar notes will be scratching sections, with small arrows in the coloured line telling you which way to turn.

Finally, the article mentions a few confirmed tracks for the game. I'll warn you, if you're approaching this game with any semblance of pessimism or doubt, do not read any further.

"Feel Good Inc." (Gorillaz) vs "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" (Marvin Gaye)
"Jayou" (Jurassic 5) vs "Rockit" (Herbie Hancock)
"Bustin' Loose" (Chuck Brown) vs "Time of the Season" (The Zombies, DJ Shadow Mix)
"All Apologies" (Nirvana) vs "Give It to Me Baby" (Rick James, DJ Shadow Mix)
"Let's Dance" (David Bowie) vs "Jack of Spades" (KRS One, DJ Shadow Mix)
"Shout" (Tears for Fears) vs "Pjanoo" (Eric Prydz)

Nirvana vs Rick James? Oh dear.

where the rap music:( the real rap music.

DJ Hero dated for North America

Activision has pencilled in DJ Hero for release in the U.S. on October 27, while the rest of the world will get it by the end of that month, the publisher said today.

In addition, the company also confirmed that the title will be fully compatible with Rock Band peripherals such as the microphone and guitar.

With DJ Hero, Activision hopes to attract a slew of new punters by building on Guitar Hero’s social gaming sensibilities with an array of new genres such as hip-hop, R&B, Motown, electronica and dance. As you might have already guessed, the game will incorporate an all-new specialised peripheral – the turntable controller.

DJ Hero will be available for PS3, PS2, Xbox 360 and Wii.

HAha i wish i could play like that guy

I missed out on the deal now I have to wait again.

ebay it like me.

As for the video, that beginning was so easy he had 5 stars before the hard part came, and you could tell he struggled with it.

The hardest part is changing the tracks back and forth.
