Get ready to turn in your wireless axe, microphone and drum kit for a turntable and a pair of headphones.

That's the word from gaming blog Kotaku (via Eurogamer), which definitively confirms what had long been rumored: "DJ Hero" is indeed coming "later this year," complete with a turntable for "competitively" spinning and mixing tunes.

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick let the news slip during a recent appearance on CNBC, according to Kotaku. Details are still scarce: Kotick is quoted saying that the "DJ Hero" turntable will, indeed, let you "play competitively and spin discs and mix songs," but that's about it for now.

The first "DJ Hero" rumors began swirling almost a year ago, after "Guitar Hero" publisher Activision filed a trademark for the game back in February 2008. The buzz flared up again in September, after anonymous sources confirmed the game (reportedly in development for more than two years) to both Kotaku and MTV Multiplayer.

Check out this Kotaku post from September for details on how the "DJ Hero" wireless controller is (or was, at least) shaping up, along with the early word on visuals (apparently, the distinctive, brightly-colored music blobs will stream around a virtual record, rather than down a guitar neck).

So, what do you think: Will the "Hero" series successfully make the jump from guitars to turntables? And are you ready to give "DJ Hero" a spin yourself?

DJ Hero 2 - Megathread - Two Turnables and a Microphone

500x_ladygaga.jpg

The next DJ Hero game will be out this fall with a whole bunch of new options, including new multiplayer modes, microphone support for singing and/or rapping and, well, I think they want you to possess two turntable controllers.

The official word from the game's publisher today is that DJ Hero 2 is all about "two turntables and a mic," though that phrase so often associated with hip-hop shouldn't make you think DJ Hero 2 is a rap-centric game. The Activision press release puts hip-hop third as it attempts to pump you up about the big sequel:

"DJ Hero 2 spins together the hottest tracks blazing up the charts and legendary club anthems from the biggest artists in pop, dance and hip hop including Dr. Dre, The Chemical Brothers, Kanye West, Metallica, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and over 85 others."

The music for the game will be mash-ups again, the first of which is actually available today — yes, months before the game is out. The preview track is a mash-up of Lady Gaga's "Just Dance" and Deadmau5's "Ghosts 'n' Stuff." It will be available for DJ Hero 1 players for a week as a download on the PlayStation 3.

The first DJ Hero game shipped with a single turntable controller and was used more as a single-player, pass-around experience than a multiplayer jam like Guitar Hero or Rock Band. The DJ Hero sequel, however, seems to be tailored more in the manner of those more popular music games. According to Activision's press release about the game, the game will support DJ battles as well as co-op rapping and singing. To emphasize just how serious they are about making sure DJ Hero 2 is a multiplayer experience, Activision is going to sell a "party bundle" that includes two turntables, a mic and a copy of the game.

The sequel seems to be backwards compatible with the first DJ Hero turntable controller, as the publisher recommends that those who have the original settle for either just buying the new DJ Hero 2 game disc or a bundle that contains just one new controller.

DJ Hero 2 is slated for release in the fall on the PlayStation 3.

My outrage at the fact that a novice had scored the freestyle crossfade instead of me quickly turned to delight that DJ Hero 2 multiplayer had made me feel anything at all.

At Gamescom this weekend I had a chance to play DJ Hero 2 multiplayer at a session hosted by FreeStyle Games studio manager Kevin McSherry, who showed us how it was done before giving us a go at the DJ deck ourselves.

The multiplayer for the original DJ Hero was as plain vanilla as they come: Two DJs on two decks playing the same song, without any of the bells and whistles that made single player so entertaining.

How does DJ Hero 2 change that? Well first, they've added a singer to the mix, though quite honestly that doesn't do much for me. The demonstration featured a woman singing along with us as we played, and I kept forgetting she was there.

Party play, on the other hand, is a pretty nifty way to liven things up. Create a set list and the game will play the music on its own, allowing players to jump in and out of the action as they please. With the right sound system and a large TV flashing hypnotic visuals in time to the music, you could do much worse as a backdrop to your next party, even without the interactive elements.

But interactivity is key, not just with the player and the game, but the player and his or her competition as well.

I was paired off against a young woman who had never played DJ Hero before during my first attempt at the new multiplayer gameplay in DJ Hero 2. I figured I was a shoe in to win, but she had Kevin McShane teaching her, while I had a guy annoyed that I kept making him switch the button controls from left to right.

The first big difference I noticed was freestyle scratching. Instead of directional arrows telling you how exactly to scratch the turntable, some scratch indicators are blank, letting you cut loose with your own patterns. McShane said this was to give players a feel for what it's really like touching your fingers to the vinyl. It's a nice effect.
DJ Hero 2 Serves Up New Ways To Get Served
Next thing that struck me was the new functionality of the red button. In DJ Hero, the red button would play any number of predetermined sounds, such as, "Yeah, boy!" While an interesting concept, the sound effects didn't match the songs, making them seem like unnecessary extra noise.

This time around the red button sounds are unique to each song. Featuring sound clips from one of the tunes being mashed together in whatever track you're playing, the effect makes much more sense this time around.

The biggest change in DJ Hero 2 is the ability to screw with your opponent.

Take the rewind. When a player gains enough power, they can spin the platter backwards, going over the track again, accumulating more points. In DJ Hero this was left out of multiplayer, as it leaves your opponents standing there looking stupid.

In DJ Hero 2, they leave the feature in, as it leaves your opponent standing there looking stupid.

It's a prime example of the new design direction FreeStyle has taken with DJ Hero 2 in order to make it a more competitive game.

Another example is the freestyle crossfade. At certain points in each song, the left-right fader switch comes into play, allowing on player to remix the track on the fly. The other player can't do anything for these few seconds, except fumble with the slider and wonder what went wrong.

Whoever is doing better leading into these portions of the track gets control. During my session, the first several times freestyle faders came up I was triumphant, but under McShane's watchful eye, my opponent started getting them more and more, leaving me feeling silly and a little bit embarrassed.

And that's exactly what DJ Hero multiplayer needed: chances for one opponent to flounder while the other show-boats.

I still managed to perform better overall, I still had those marks of shame on my record. I'm just glad she didn't pull off a rewind. I never would have lived that down.

I'm confident DJ Hero 2 has what it takes to make it a true party game. Whether or not rhythm game fans will feel the same way remains to be seen.

DJ Hero 2, set for an Oct. 19 release, will include 105 songs remixed into 80 different mixes, Activision said today.

"The individual songs that have been mixed into the DJ Hero 2 soundtrack have been viewed online more than 1.5 billion times, which really speaks volumes to both the size and scope of our music," said Dan Neil, Music Director, FreeStyleGames. "Working with some of the best DJs in the world, we were able to take this amazing collection of the biggest pop, hip-hop and dance hits, and with some turntable magic, craft the best soundtrack in entertainment."

The mixes were created by the music producers at FreeStyleGames as well as Deadmau5, David Guetta, DJ Qbert, Tiesto and a slew of other world renowned "mixologists."
