do you buy steelbooks for the movie? or for the steelbook?

I was wondering why you guys collect steelbooks and limited editions.
Is it more in relation to the awesome packaging, or because you really like the movie?

With prices of some steelbooks reaching over a €100,00 and also the many steelbook releases lately I am often wondering why I still collect them, because they are very expansive in comparison to a normal amaray version of the movie. Don't get me wrong here I love collecting steelbooks and lenticular slipcovers, but some prices are so high that I really am wondering why I should pay so much for it while I can get it three times as cheap in a normal amaray case. If it is really about the movie why spend extra money on a steelbook?

A good example is the Thor Kimchidvd lenticular edition. I love the look of that steelbook, but if you want to buy it right now you need to pay around €120,00 to €190,00, you know how many normal versions of the movie I can buy for that?!

So lets do it like this:

Where would you stand with collecting? 1 is only for the movie, 10 is only for the steelbook.

I would probably place myself around 6-7, because I love steelbooks, but also I love movies. I would not easily pay more than €15,00 for a steelbook UNLESS I really love the art or the movie, or it is a movie of Tim Burton.

I have almost done it, especially with the Taken 2 steelbook on several occasions I've tempted. But the film was laughable so I'd just be buying it for the steelbook as watching it is like being in a torture scene in the film itself. The 47 Ronin steelbook looks desirable, never watched the film myself but according to some it's far from gem status.

Where was I again? Oh yes, no I don't buy films on steelbook if I don't like the film :)

Edit: I used to be around the 6 mark, but these days I've mellowed a bit, so I'm probably 4-5. :)

I would say that I am around 7 or 8. I only buy steelbooks , but I also want the steelbook for the movie. I have to like the movie otherwise I will not buy the steelbook. I see so many steelbooks with really dreadfull movies and even if it is embossed and has fine inside art work if I do not like the movie I will not buy it.

I also don't understand the people who just buy a steelbook because a movie is released as a steelbook. 9 out of 10 times, when I read their reactions here, they haven't even seen the movie in the theatre for example.

I only buy a movie if I really like it, and want to see it more then one time. If it is released in a nice steelbook then it is great, I do not buy amaray's anymore.
If a movie I like is not available in a steelbook I rather buy the digibook then an amaray.

Amaray's are kryptonite for me as a collector. I can't stand them and do not want them
 
10 for me. I only buy steelbook for the collectible but not for the movie. I have many steelbook twice or more (thor 2, django, ender's game, hunger games...).

When it's a movie I want to see, it's like a bonus. ;)

I do the same for some collector's. For example the Hobbit : the desolation of smaug, I have the collector, the UK steelbook, and I buy the bluray separately to watch the movie and keep others versions mint.

I hope not to be alone like that. :emb:
 
4 - I only buy steelbooks for films I like or am interested in but I will purposely get them in steelbook if its available. I don't buy steelbooks of films I don't like just because of the packaging, all the steelbooks I buy get opened and are for me to enjoy.

The reason I would say I'm a 4 is beacuse I have also re-purchased films I have cause I wanted the steelbook, for example I bought The aviator steelbook when it came out even though the missus bought the amaray version for me a while back. I've only done that a few times and only for movies I really love.
 
I could have sworn there was another thread on this topic, but I could be wrong. Anyways, I got a question for all those who don't answer 8-10. The question is, "do you have money to burn"? Lets get an unarguable fact out of the way. Steelbooks are a premium packaging, meaning they cost more than a regular plastic packaging. So if it's all or mostly about the movie, why are you in this hobby to begin with? If I were you, I'd pay the $10 a month for Netflix and watch all the movies you want. That's the premium on just 1 steelbook. With all those internet movie sites, you can even rip current blockbusters and watch it for free. Not to mention the countless amounts of old movies on youtube. So yes, the question of "do you have money to burn" is very valid. So, do you?
 
Buy for the movie only. A good example I didn't buy the French Connection steelbook because it's not the proper remastered (untouched by director) version. Having said that if the artwork is totally crap (The Day the Earth Stood still, Rocky Horror Show, Butch Cassidy) I won't touch the steelbook with a barge pole.....
 
I would say I'm around 7
Most of my steelbooks are films I really enjoy but there are still quite a few I would never have bought in a million years if they didn't have such great art work!
A recent example would be Nurse 3D! LOVE this steelbook but the film is definitely not on my watch list!!
 
I'd have to say 4. If I liked the movie enough I'll usually pick up a steel, but if it's a movie I don't care for I usually just skip the steel.

Lately though I've been getting a ton of steels on older movies to add to my bluray collection.

4, a great looking steelbook for a good price would not be enough for me to buy it if the movie is not one that I really like. But if I'm looking to buy a movie I really like than I will try to get the steelbook version as long as I can afford it.
 
I only ever buy steelbooks of films I like, why would you spent so much money on a tin box if you don't want the film?

Whether I buy the steelbooks of films I like does depend sometimes on the artwork and design as I may have it on dvd and has to be nice to upgrade
 
I would say around a 6-7 range. Mainly buy them for the art work and to have as a conversation piece if I ever have friends come over. Though that feels like an eternity ago because everyone my age tells me their too busy to spend time with, possibly due to social media becoming the new norm.
