E3 09 - Sony's Conference A+

This year's Electronic Entertainment Expo is taking a giant step towards returning to the glitzy, people-packed shows of three years ago, with attendance expected to be about ten times last year's show and the exhibit halls nearly the same size as the shows that once included ear-splitting rock bands, fire juggling and bikini-clad models.

E3 2009 will also see the return of a more relaxed registration policy for show-goers and rules that once more allow models on the expo floor.

The return to the size and glamor of earlier E3s comes after two years of downsizing and falling attendance at the show that once drew 70,000 people to Los Angeles to revel in all things video game.

In 2006, the Entertainment Software Association announced they would be downsizing the show and moving it to Santa Monica. In 2007, the show returned to the Los Angeles Convention Center, but remained a shadow of its former self. Several developers decided to not attend last year's show, including Activision, Atlus, Bethesda Softworks, NCsoft, Vivendi Games and Warner Bros. Interactive.

This year's list of attendees shows that all but NCsoft are returning to the show.

“The 2009 E3 Expo will be the preeminent North American computer and video game event,” said Michael D. Gallagher, CEO of the ESA. “With robust exhibitor sales, high attendee interest, and strong commitments from multiple industry sectors, we are going to ensure the full excitement and energy of this industry is on display.”

Currently about 70 exhibitors are listed as attending the show, which is more than double the number at last year's. And event organizers say that the floor is filling up quickly.

"We encourage interested companies to contact us because floor sales are going quickly with more than half sold out," a spokesman told me.

Another major change to the show is the new registration policy which has been relaxed to allow more attendees to make it into the show. The last two shows were by invitation only. But this year's show return's to the 2006 policy of allowing people to register to get in.

The show is open to all "credentialed" international and U.S.-based media, industry analysts, retailers, developers and business partners.

Industry professionals need to submit two pieces of identification showing they work in the industry and press credentials are acquired by registering on the site. Both media credentialing and attenddee registration is now official open over on the e3 site.

While the show floor maps aren't yet available on the official site, I've heard that this year's show will essentially be the same size as 2006's convention hall-filling show but without Kentia Hall.

Unannounced PS3 Exclusives To Explode At E3?

Has anyone noticed that many of the most anticipated unannounced projects seem to be PlayStation 3 exclusives? Not all of them, certainly, but the buzz tends to center on PS3 games that haven't been officially confirmed just yet, and there is the distinct possibility that we could see some huge announcements at E3.

Perhaps first on the list is whatever Team ICO's game turns out to be. We're fairly certain it's exclusive to Sony's machine and we've recently heard that it might be closer to ICO than to Shadow of the Colossus. Now, due to the huge loyal following that can be attached to either title, it's no surprise that many, many gamers have been waiting on this announcement for quite some time. It's bound to enjoy an unveiling at some point this year, and we figure E3 is the perfect venue. Next up is the possibility of Kingdom Hearts III, although it's more optimism and hope as there's virtually no concrete evidence to support the theory. But Square-Enix seems to have come around to the idea of supporting the PS3 - at least, we hope they have - and we're long overdue for another KH installment. It's way too lucrative a franchise for the publisher to abandon it, and the fans really want another game.

And although David Jaffe says he doesn't have full control over when his new project from Eat Sleep Play can be announced, we're assuming Sony PR is preparing something for E3. Most have concluded that the game is Twisted Metal for the PS3, but despite supposed "confirmations" from places like IGN, Jaffe claims there has been no official announcement for that project. Well, how much longer do we have to wait? Lastly, we believe there may be a few more first-party titles we haven't heard of just yet, and Sony may use E3 to unveil at least one of them. The bottom line is that we're well aware of many of the blockbuster franchises, but when it comes to exclusive IPs, information and details tend to go wanting until the last minute. But we say, prepare for some fireworks in a few months time...

What? Did you say, Final Fantasy VII remake...? ...if you did, shut up. We can't hear you. 'plugs fingers in ears'

SCEA: E3 2009 to be one of the biggest in the past 11 years

SCEA hardware marketing boss John Koller is expecting this year’s E3 to be one of the most significant for the company in the last 11 years.

“It’s going to be a big E3,” Koller told VG247, talking at GDC.

“We’ve just started planning what the announcements will be, but I’ve been here for 11 years: this will be one of the larger E3s in terms of software and just discussions about where we’re going from a brand perspective and where each of the platforms is headed.”

It’s widely rumoured that PlayStation’s biggest brands are going to be megatonning Sony’s E3 press conference in June, and Koller did nothing to dampen expectation.

“I think some of the big announcements are going to come of the software side. We talked a bit at Destination PlayStation, and came out with about half of the PSP line-up, maybe even less, and the balance we’re going to be talking about in the months leading up to e3 and at E3,” he said.

“The same goes for PS3. There’s a really strong line-up of games that’s going to help drive a lot of business.”

Bring. It. On. E3 takes place in LA in the first week of June

the chances of the new one getting hacked in the next year will probably be pretty slim.

they're just now getting around to MAYBE getting into the 3000

Yup it's going to take time to master the 3000 and who knows how long it might take for a new PSP to get hacked.

Oh yeah that too. I hope they got some kind of gameplay that would be sweet to see on the floor! I also hope EA brings back their 360 screens :) it's pretty damn sweet!
