Interplay announced today that Gameloft will develop and publish an Earthworm Jim game for the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, WiiWare, and mobile platforms. Fans of the original game, which is roughly 15 years old, can look forward to the return of the 16-bit funny earthworm super hero.

The game is set to release first on Xbox in the last quarter of 2009, and the following month on the other platforms. We are not sure at this time which version of the game will make its way to the downloadable circuit, but whatever game we get, we're sure it'll be good for a few laughs.

Earthworm Jim Downloadable Title is a Remake

The recent announcement of a new Earthworm Jim title was pretty vague, and left us guessing what exactly it would be. Signs pointed to a remake, but we weren't ruling out a fully original game either. MTV Multiplayer reports that the game is indeed a remake of the original Sega Genesis title, as confirmed by a Gameloft representative.

Gameloft is working with Interplay to bring Jim back, and the game will be released for Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and WiiWare before the end of the year. XBLA will get a month of exclusivity for the title. "The game, with its humorous and edgy style, is a great fit for today's gamer who craves a fully immersive experience that is fun and easily accessible," said Gameloft senior VP Gonzague de Vallois. "We look forward to delivering a fantastic game."
