Kevin Hart is ready to show off his serious side.

The comedian will star in Sony Pictures’ “Fatherhood,” a big-screen adaptation of the Matt Logelin bestseller “Two Kisses for Maddy: A Memoir of Loss & Love.” The film, which centers on a widower who must raise his daughter after his wife dies in childbirth, is directed by Paul Weitz (“About a Boy”).

Hart just scored a box office hit with “The Upside,” another change-of-pace role. Its success came despite controversy surrounding Hart’s selection as Oscar host. He abandoned the emcee gig amid blowback over homophobic jokes he made earlier in his career. Hart had been alternately apologetic and defiant while promoting “The Upside,” a stance that further inflamed the controversy.

Hart will shoot “Fatherhood” after he wraps up the sequel to “Jumanji.” His other movies include “Night School,” “Get Hard,” and “Central Intelligence.”

Dana Stevens adapted Logelin’s book, with Weitz providing his own draft. Marty Bowen (Temple Hill), David Beaubaire, Peter Kiernan (Free Association), and Hart and John Cheng (HartBeat) will produce the movie.

Sony is beginning a nationwide search for the actress to play Hart’s daughter in the film.

Weitz is represented by UTA and attorney Alex Kohner at Morris Yorn. Stevens is represented by WME. Hart is represented by UTA, 3 Arts, and Schreck Rose Dapello Adams Berlin & Dunham. Brittany Morrissey will oversee the pic for the studio.

EXCLUSIVE: Alfre Woodard has signed on to play Kevin Hart’s mother-in-law in Fatherhood, the Sony Pictures film adaptation based on the memoir Two Kisses For Maddy: A Memoir Of Loss & Love by Matt Logelin. Paul Weitz is directing the motion picture from a screenplay by Dana Stevens. Weitz penned the current draft.

Logelin’s novel details his life after his high school sweetheart, Liz, passed away after giving birth to their daughter Madeline. There was little time to grieve a life-shattering loss for Logelin: his wife bore the brunt of their impending jump into parenting and suddenly he was the sole caretaker for a newborn daughter, his link to his beloved wife.

Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen, David Beaubaire, Free Association’s Peter Kiernan and HartBeat’s Hart are producing the project.

Woodard, an Oscar nominee and four-time Emmy winner, was last seen in Clemency, the Sundance film that picked up the Grand Jury Prize, making director Chinonye Chukwu the first black woman to win the award. Neon picked up the film and will release it in December. Furthermore, she stars opposite Jason Momoa in Apple’s original drama series See, and lends her voice to Jon Favreau’s highly anticipated The Lion King revamp, which Disney will release in July.

Woodard is repped by ICM, Circle of Confusion, and Gochman Law Group.

Quite enjoy anything that he does but will be interesting to see how he plays a more serious role.

Will it be a case of expecting him to be funny.

He seemed a tad more serious in that one he did with Bryan Cranston
Oh yeah forgot about that one he did, wasn't that the one were Cranston was in the wheelchair?

Sony announced a slew of other dates Thursday, including an April 3, 2020 release for Kevin Hart and director Paul Weitz's Fatherhood. The film is adapted from the book by Matt Logelin, who was left to raise his daughter alone following his wife's death in childbirth. Melody Hurd will play Hart's onscreen daughter, with Alfre Woodard playing his mother-in-law. The date is already occupied by Fox's The New Mutants and Paramount's The Lovebirds.
