Will there be a FFVII remake? Not "yet," says Square

Square Enix duo Yoshinori Kitase and Motomu Toriyama have said that the firm is not actively working on a Final Fantasy VII remake, though conceded the pair still discuss the project between themselves from time to time.

Speaking to VG247 at GamesCom last week, the Final Fantasy XIII developers recommended that eager fans instead turn their attention to the recently released PSN version of the popular RPG classic to quell their hunger.

Speaking via a translator, they said, “There’s not official project that’s up and running for a remake of Final Fantasy VII at this point. Both Toriyama-san and Kitase-san were involved in the development of the game, however, and it holds a special place in their hearts. They do talk about it on a personal level, like, ‘If we did it it would be like this or like that.’

“So, they do talk about it, but there’s no official project yet. But there’s that PSN release that just came out, so if you could play that for the time being, it should be fun.”

Speculation on a FFVII remake first cropped up during a technical demonstration at E3 2005, which depicted the opening of the game running on PlayStation 3 hardware. However, Square has insisted that this was never intended to be a fully blown remake. Still, we live in hope.

FFVII would take 10 times as long to develop compared to FFXIII

Square Enix’s Yoshinori Kitase has revealed that if the firm attempted to remake FFVII to the same level of quality as FFXIII, it would take the firm roughly 10 times longer to create in comparison to the PS3/360 RPG.

Speaking at the launch event for FFXIII in Korea recently, Kitase commented, “We’ve gotten this question a lot from many countries,” adding:

“To make FFXIII at this level of quality, it took us 3 to 4 years. If we were to make FFVII in the same style of FFXIII, it would take 10 times as long, so it would be difficult to take it up immediately. However, we always keep in mind how often this is requested.”

The subject of a FFVII remake has popped up numerous times over the past year or so, with Square most recently commenting that it aims to “explore” the possibility of remaking the classic RPG.

they need to start development now for a late ps4 launch. i'm completely ok with waiting. as long as it comes, and since its clearly too late for a ps3 launch, ps4

E3 2011: Square doesn't rule out Final Fantasy VII-2

Square has admitted it would be interested in the prospect of making Final Fantasy VII-2, though insisted the project would have to be bolstered by a meaty budget.

"It would have to be really big budget title,” Final Fantasy overlord Yoshinori Kitase told CVG. “It would take a long time and a lot of money to make that. We would be interested given the opportunity, but obviously we'd have to see, round up the best staff, and we'd have to look at the situation in the market to see if it's good timing for us... At the moment we've got no plans... We might do it."

Final Fantasy VII released back in 1997 and is widely considered among fans to be one of, if not the best entry in the venerable RPG franchise to date.

The game was re-released on PSN two years ago, though fans have been clamouring for a fully-fledged remake ever since Sony showed off a PS3 tech demo of the game’s intro back at E3 2005.

It would be profitable for them theres no doubt about that. And I think they will make it eventually because of that. But at this point it will be out on ps4 and not the ps3

I don't get their mentality though, they continue to capitalize on the success of that title. Even today FFVII characters are plastered on everything Square at least in a lot of things regarding their products.

Every year they make new figurines, there's been tons of prequel stories, tons of ads, movie, movie re-release, etc. even more than any other game they've ever made! I just can't understand why they won't pull the trigger and say fine we're making the game...

The fans want it, the makers want it, what's stopping them?
