Gran Turismo 5 (also known as GT5) the fifth edition of the highly acclaimed Gran Turismo racing video game series, developed by Polyphony Digital and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Expanding on the Prologue version, which was first released in Japan on December 13, 2007 and intended to give an impression of the final game, it will be the first of the main numbered series to feature on the PlayStation 3.

As found in the Prologue, and for the first time in the numbered Gran Turismo series, the game is set to feature cars from Ferrari, including the Ferrari F2007 Formula One World Championship car. In addition to Prologue features, it will also include the Test Track from the BBC motoring show Top Gear, and will greatly expand on the number of cars available to over 9000. There will also be a 16 player online mode as in GT5 Prologue.

In an April 2008 interview, Kazunori Yamauchi revealed that 150 people had worked on Gran Turismo 5 for four years, with all of Polyphony Digital's 120 employees working on GT5, and the game costing 50 times more to develop than 1997's Gran Turismo. He also confessed that GT5 might not be released until after 2009. In a July 2008 interview with IGN, Yamauchi mentioned that at the moment, Polyphony Digital is focused on updates for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and that Gran Turismo 5 may not be released until 2010.

On November 30, 2008. Sony’s chief executive in Southern Europe, James Armstrong, revealed in a statement to a Spanish newspaper that GT5 is expected to be released around Christmas 2009. This would probably mean a late Summer release for Japan and an Autumn/Winter release for Europe and North America. This release date has yet to be confirmed as an official time of release by Polyphony Digital.

GT5 to release shortly after GT PSP, says Yamauchi-san

Polyphony Digital bigwig Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed that Gran Turismo 5 will launch shortly after the release of the PlayStation Portable iteration of the venerable racing franchise.

At present, the team are busy polishing up GT PSP, which will be available on store shelves alongside the PSP Go on October 1. However, the developers are eager to get its older brother out not long after the handheld entry.

“[We're] just thankful that so many people are interested in Gran Turismo 5″, said Yamauchi-san, adding, “[It] should be out shortly after that date.”

GT5 has been on display all this week at GamesCom, with speculation building heavily to a pre-Christmas launch for the hotly anticipated racing title. We will bring you more info on this story as it breaks – for now, keep those fingers crossed we see the game in time for the holidays.

While a recent announcement by Polyphony Digital President Kazunori Yamauchi slated GT5 to be released “shortly after” GT for PSP, this was all but a solid confirmation of GT5 to be released in 2009, (after all, “shortly after” could be anything!).

However, a new image of a brochure handed out during Gamescom confirms the rumored 2009 release date for GT5. The packet is completely in German, but “4 Quartal 2009″ can’t mean too many other things.

At best, look to get GT5 in your hands look to get GT5 in your hands by early October, but at the worst, count on having it around the time Saint Nick rolls into town!

Gran Turismo 5 hitting Japan in March 2010

Sony announced during its press conference at the Tokyo Game Show this week that PlayStation 3 exclusive racer Gran Turismo 5 will be released in Japan in March 2010.

The hotly anticipated sequel from Polyphony Digital was expected to arrive on the scene around December, though unless the western version miraculously shows up three months before its Japanese counterpart, we can safely assume we won’t be getting the game in our Christmas stockings this year.

Gran Turismo 5 is currently doing the rounds at TGS this week, so hopefully we’ll have some new footage for you over the next couple of days.

Wow, how can they not have it ready for 2009. How long have they been working on this game? If it doesn't make it for x-mas 2009, I think they will miss out on a huge opportunity.

I wonder if this game is having some issues right now. Also, didn't they say the game is now at 65% completion, yet Kaz said it could be released any day or something like that? I really think they are either having some serious problems with the game or they are adding/upgrading some issues like damage for all cars etc. It'll be on the ps4 if they don't get their act together. And how does it make sense to release it in March.

They already have MAG, God of War III, Heavy Rain, Final Fantasy, white knight chronicles (for those who like Rpgs)....plus games like bioshock 2, battlefield bad company 2, just cause 2. They really should've had this ready for x-mas season.

Gran Turismo 5 to have simultaneous NA/EU release - in 2010?

Remember yesterday when we heard from Polyphony Digital bigwig Kazunori Yamauchi that Gran Turismo 6 will have a shorter development period than Gran Turismo 5? Well, Yamauchi has said that Gran Turismo 5's North American and European releases might not be that far from each other, or even from the Japanese release in March of 2010.

"I don't think it's going to be that different for US and Europe," Yamauchi speculated at the Tokyo Game Show. "Marketing is still discussing their issues."

Gran Turismo 5 features over 950 initial cars and supports gamer-made YouTube clips showing off their racing feats. It also expands the 'Gran Turismo TV' video service and holds the crown for one of the longest anticipated PS3 games thus far.
