SCEE reveals Heavy Rain: Collector's Edition

The folks over on the official European PlayStation Blog have lifted the lid on a swanky Collector’s Edition release of Quantic Dream’s forthcoming PS3 thriller Heavy Rain.

Seen below, the CE comes packaged in a specialised ‘rain-effect’ slipcase, which, thanks to some snazzy manufacturing tricks among others, looks as if it’s coated in 3D raindrops.

The meat of the package, however, comes in the form of a Voucher allowing consumers to download additional content for the game via PlayStation Network. See below for a description.

-Heavy Rain: Chronicle 1 – The Taxidermist – Experience Madison’s dangerous investigation in full, before it’s available on the PlayStation Store.

-The Heavy Rain Official Soundtrack – Recorded at the legendary Abbey Road studios, and filled with the powerful orchestral themes that form a key part of the experience of playing Heavy Rain.

-Dynamic XMB theme – Lend a little Heavy Rain ambience to your XMB.

Those of you who don’t fancy shelling out for the Collector’s Edition will still be able to get your hands on the DLC shortly after the release of Heavy Rain in early 2010. Stay tuned for more info on the game as it breaks.

GamesCom: Heavy Rain will focus more on emotions

When Heavy Rain is released next year we'll get a completely new gaming experience, explained David Cage from Quantic Dream. Cage showed off the game at GamesCom, highlighting some of the four main characters, including a private detective named Scott Shelby and a man named Ethan.

Ethan lost his oldest son in a crowd, and his kid was hit by a car, Cage explained. Ethan must confront his own fears when his son goes missing. The idea is based on Cage losing his son once in a shopping mall.

The game is said to be like no other title currently available. It uses the PlayStation 3 in new ways, and is not your typical game that features repetitive action. Instead, the game focuses strongly on emotions.

Heavy Rain to feature 13 voice languages, plus new gameplay video

Quantic Dream’s Heavy Rain appears to be one of the most compelling games coming out in 2010. CEO and Co-Founder David Cage told journalists at GamesCom that the game will feature 13 voice languages and five more for subtitles.

Voice languages include English, French, Italian, Dutch, Japanese, Mandarin, Korean, and more.

We also have new gameplay footage with Cage playing detective Shelby. The video shows off the game’s enormous details and control functions. The detective is apparently in a local convenience store asking the clerk for information about the Origami Killer.

Heavy Rain dev on PS3: 'There's room for improvement'

Quantic Dream bigwig David Cage has said there’s still plenty of room for improvement in regards to developing on PlayStation 3, noting that hotly anticipated thriller Heavy Rain marks the developer's first experience in working on the console.

"Well, you need to keep in mind that Heavy Rain is our first title on PS3. It's not the second or third generation of games on the same platform. We've just discovered the platform right now. So yeah, there's plenty of room for improvement I'm sure,” Cage told the chaps at VideoGamer.com

"At Quantic Dream we know we can do much better than what we do here,” he added.

Heavy Rain sports some of the most impressive visuals seen on Sony’s black box to date (or any other platform, for that matter), and is currently pencilled in for release exclusively on PS3 in early 2010.

How Quantic Dream may extend Heavy Rain

If you are discouraged to hear that Quantic Dream’s PlayStation 3 exclusive, Heavy Rain, will only last roughly 10-hours, founder David Cage has stated the company is in talks with Sony about offering additional storylines through downloadable content.

In a recent interview with VideoGamer.com, Cage said, “We are talking with Sony at the moment about having maybe extra downloadable content, maybe with prequels or sequels about the characters. I’m sure people will get attached to some of them and will want to know them even better.”

While the game will have some online features, don’t get your hopes up about a multiplayer experience.

“We’re working on this at the moment, having some content online and different features online,” he said. “But it won’t be of course multiplayer, it’s a single-player experience.”

Look for Heavy Rain in early 2010 exclusively on the PS3.

Heavy Rain demo still up in the air

Heavy Rain developer Quantic Dream has admitted that the studio is still flirting with the possibility of releasing a demo of the hotly anticipated PlayStation 3 thriller, explaining that the disparity between each of the game’s scenes makes it difficult for players to get a solid grasp on what the title is about.

Speaking with VideoGamer.com at GamesCom last week, studio founder David Cage stated, "There are some big debates at the moment within Sony about the proposal and the interest of a demo,” adding, "Even to make shows like Cologne, it's a real nightmare to pick out one scene and say, look, we're going to choose one scene and people will understand what this game is all about.”

"It's very difficult to find one scene like that because each scene in Heavy Rain is different. So when we showed Mad Jackal, people thought, okay this is the game. You are a profiler and you investigate and you fight and we got 20 scenes like this. No, it's the only scene structure like that in the full game. Then we show Madison - they say okay you go with this character and you explore. No, it's the only scene like that. Now we show Shelby, and we're going to show Ethan's scene. All four scenes are different, so it's difficult to say look, this is Heavy Rain.”

Cage said that there are various pros and cons to releasing a demo. On one hand, the studio doesn’t want to churn out a playable scene only for gamers to then assume the rest of the game plays out in the same way. On the flip side, however, Cage acknowledged that punters may feel the game isn’t worth the purchase should a demo not see the light of day.

"Honestly I don't know at the moment," he said. "There are pros and cons to doing this. If you release a demo some people may think this demo represents the game where it's not the case. Like in a movie, can you imagine I'm going to release two minutes of a movie and you're going to imagine what the movie's about? Not easy. It's the same thing. How can you convey the emotional side of the game just with a scene? But there's also the other counterpoint, which is if you don't release a demo some people may think, oh they don't release a demo because the game is not good. No that's not the case."

He also observed that a number of well received titles in the past were preceded by a demo that ultimately didn’t do the final product justice:

"It's a difficult situation because it's a different type of game and it's difficult just to take a sample and say, look, you understand everything if you play this thing. And there are some examples of very good games in the past who released not that good demo. The game was fantastic, but the demo was kind of okay. So it's still in debate,” explained Cage.

Heavy Rain is due out exclusively on PS3 in early 2010.

Quantic Dream: Heavy Rain QTE criticism is 'bull***t'

Quantic Dream bigwig David Cage has brushed off criticism accusing the firm’s upcoming PlayStation 3 thriller Heavy Rain for being over reliant on quick time events.

The studio co-founder didn’t mince his words when given the opportunity to hit out at recent criticism of the hotly anticipated title at GamesCom last week, stating, "Bullshit! Just bullshit! I mean what's the question? We released Fahrenheit before. People know very well what the kind of balance we're looking for is. The balance is quite similar in Heavy Rain.”

Cage noted that sceptics are likely confused by the game’s 3D interface, mistaking it for quick time events, when in fact you are given absolute freedom to explore and interact with the environment around you.

"I think that people who didn't see any demos or did not play the game are a little bit confused by the fact that the interface is in 3D. It's not quick time events. You navigate. You're free to explore. It's just that the interface, instead of being 2D icons in the lower corner, they are now inside the set. That's the only difference. You control the character second to second, and the balance is quite similar to Fahrenheit. There's no difference."

Wrapping up, Cage stated emphatically that the game’s objective is to tell the story through gameplay segments, not cut scenes – if it were the latter, he noted it wouldn't be any different than making a movie.

"You know when you make a first-person shooter, you just see ten seconds and you know what the game is about," said Cage. "When you see a game that has no real reference, that is kind of different, it's really difficult. Some people imagine things. Don't be afraid. It's not quick time based. All the purpose of Heavy Rain is to tell the story not through cutscenes but through gameplay. I would be stupid just to release cutscenes. I mean what's the point? I'd better make movie then. That's silly."

Heavy Rain is due out exclusively for PS3 early next year.

Heavy Rain a PS3 seller says David Cage

Quantic Dreams boss and Heavy Rain director David Cage believes that Heavy Rain is already convincing gamers to purchase a PS3.

Chatting about the narrative-driven title Cage said that the buzz on the Internet forums is that Heavy Rain will help shift a few PS3 consoles.

“This experience should be available exclusively on PlayStation 3, and we want people to buy a PlayStation 3 because of Heavy Rain”, he told IGN.

“We’re really happy at the moment - and I hope it’s going to last – that when we go onto forums we find people watching the trailers and stuff and saying ‘this is the game that’s going to make me buy a PlayStation 3′”, he added.

He compared the game (inevitably) to Farenheit, saying that Heavy Rain is “really Fahrenheit with more experience, more maturity and probably a better vision and understanding of how this type of experience can be created.”

Cage earlier announced that the game will be getting a pre-launch demo.

Yeah, you read that right. A week ago, we reported a cryptic tweet from Official Playstation Magazine suggesting that there was also a shower scene in Heavy Rain;

“Heavy Rain preview code GET! Whole team gathered around… to watch @bodbod take a shower. :-/ Looks stunning so far. (Not @bodbod)”

Obviously, we assumed it was Madison, who shows all in a strip scene. However, another tweet from OPM, in response to when the public will be able to see the scene, reveals that it’s a male character having a clean;

“Early next year. (It’s a dude in the shower though.)”

The game is out in 2010 for the PS3.
