Miles Davis - Kind of Blue

hQTAPb0.jpg

In the later years of an extraordinary career, jazz legend Miles Davis would often denounce some of his earlier work - even though that included albums as groundbreaking and revered as Kind of Blue - but whatever Davis might have made of it in retrospect, his 1959 album is regarded by many not only as Davis' masterpiece, but possibly the greatest jazz album ever made.

Featuring a band that included three all-time greats at the height of their powers in Davis, John Coltrane and Julian “Cannonball” Adderley, Kind of Blue both introduced and distilled the idea of modal jazz in a way that became a game-changing contribution to the genre, not to mention its biggest-selling record ever.

Our Vinyl Week exclusive version is pressed onto stunning translucent blue vinyl (it had to be blue, didn't it?) and is limited to 1000 copies.

Various Artists - Top Gun OST

hQTAPb0.jpg

The 1980s were packed with great film soundtracks, but the one created by 'Axel F' composer Harold Faltermeyer and synth pioneer Giorgio Moroder for Top Gun is surely one of the decade's most iconic. Alongside their film score were several original Moroder/Faltermeyer-penned songs performed by the likes of Kenny Loggins, Teena Marie and Berlin - the latter scoring a huge hit with 'Take My Breath Away' - as well as contributions from Miami Sound Machine and Cheap Trick.

Our vinyl week exclusive edition of this 80s icon is pressed onto blue vinyl and limited to 1000 copies.

Small Faces – There Are But Four Small Faces

hQTAPb0.jpg

Although they had already released three albums in the UK by the time Steve Marriott and co. recorded There Are But Four Small Faces, but the album became their first released in America as the band rode the wave of the 'British Invasion' of the 1960s. It also yielded two of the Small Faces' finest moments in the rip-roaring 'Tin Soldier' and the wonderfully psychedelic 'Itchycoo Park'.

First released in 1968, the album joins our list of Vinyl Week exclusives with a newly-pressed version on green vinyl, limited to just 550 copies.

Adapted from the book of the same name about late 1950s London life by Colin MacInnes, Julien Temple's musical film featured a soundtrack with a Gil Evans score and songs contributed by the likes of Ray Davies, Sade and Jerry Dammers, as well as a title track by none other than David Bowie.

The soundtrack is not only one of our Vinyl Week exclusives this year but also becomes the latest addition hmv's exclusive 1921 series, with a new version pressed onto beautiful neon pink and blue vinyl, limited to only 1000 copies.

Fairport Convention – Fairport Convention

hQTAPb0.jpg

Folk-rock stalwarts Fairport Convention have been through many changes since their foundation 1967 and have seen more line-ups in that time than some police stations, but it all began right here with their eponymous debut album and the original line-up of Richard Thompson, Ashley Hutchings, Judy Dyble, Iain Matthews, Simon Nicol and Martin Lamble.

Featuring both original compositions such as 'It's Alright Ma, It's Only Witchcraft' and cover versions of songs by the likes of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen, the album joins our list of Vinyl Week exclusives for this year and becomes the second new addition our 1921 series, with a brand new version of their debut pressed onto orange vinyl and limited to just 1000 copies.

Queen – Greatest Hits II

hQTAPb0.jpg

Those of you who have been paying attention in previous years will have noted that Queen's first Greatest Hits compilation featured as a lovely red vinyl exclusive version in 2019, so obviously we had to try and add their second compilation into the mix this year and that's exactly what we've done.

Featuring a series of Queen classics from the latter half of their Freddie Mercury years such as 'A Kind of Magic', 'Under Pressure' and 'I Want To Break Free', Greatest Hits II joins our line-up of Vinyl Week exclusives this year with a new version pressed onto clear blue vinyl and limited to 1500 copies.

Deep Purple – Burn

hQTAPb0.jpg

After the incessant touring and fractious recording sessions for their seventh album Who Do We Think We Are finally led to the departure of original vocalist Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover, Deep Purple reconvened for their first album recorded with Trapeze bassist Glen Hughes and a then-unknown David Coverdale on vocals – four years before he would go on to found Whitesnake. The resulting album Burn added a little funk into the band's increasingly blues-driven sound and delivered a couple of standouts in the title track and Ritchie Blackmore/Coverdale-penned epic 'Mistreated'.

Burn joins our list of Vinyl Week limited editions this year with a new version pressed onto stunning opaque orange vinyl and limited to a tiny run of just 350 copies.

Mazzy Star – So That Tonight I Might See

hQTAPb0.jpg

Arguably the finest of three albums released in the 1990s by Mazzy Star, So That Tonight I Might See represents their second full-length offering and first made its arrival in 1993. Including two of their finest tracks in album opener 'Fade Into You' and the magnificently melancholic 'Into Dust', the album was by far their most successful and their only LP to reach platinum status in their native U.S.

The album is one of our new limited editions for Vinyl Week this year and comes in the form of a beautifully-presented edition pressed onto purple vinyl and available in an extremely limited run of just 200 copies.

Various Artists – Stax Number Ones

hQTAPb0.jpg

In recent years the revived Stax Records has released albums by artists such as Leon Ware, Nathaniel Rateliff and Ben Harper, but along with the likes of Motown and Chess Records, Stax was also one of the most important labels for black artists in the 1950s and 60s – particularly in the genres of blues, soul and gospel - and at various points was home to a list of artists that includes Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Booker T. & The M.G.'s and The Staple Singers, to name just a tiny handful. Its outsized influence on the sound of the era has also seen its extensive back catalogue mined for samples by the likes of Wu-Tang Clan, Coolio and Cypress Hill, making many of the label's vinyl releases highly sought after.

A new compilation featuring some of the label's biggest hits joins our list of Vinyl Week limited editions this year and features a collection of chart-toppers from artists such as Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, Jean Knight, Booker T. and many, many more. Our new version is pressed onto stunning translucent red vinyl and limited to only 400 copies.

David Bowie – Let's Dance

25a0qtJ.jpg

David Bowie's years spent in Berlin during the 1970s were arguably some of his most creative, but while albums like Low and Heroes won plenty of acclaim from critics, their often experimental nature saw them fare less well commercially than some of his earlier albums, which may well have been part of what prompted a return to more radio-friendly sound with his 1980 album Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps). The album proved successful enough to earn Bowie a huge new recording deal, but with that came pressure for hits and Bowie knew he needed a big, shiny pop record to kick off his new era.

Bowie recruited producer Nile Rodgers and together the pair created one of Bowie's most successful albums in Let's Dance, thanks in no small part to it's disco-infused title track, as well as other hits like 'China Girl' and 'Modern Love'. First released in 1983, the album joins our list of Vinyl Week exclusives this year with a new version pressed onto blue vinyl and limited to 1500 copies.

Cypress Hill – Black Sunday

25a0qtJ.jpg

Along with a handful of other groups that emerged from the West Coast rap scene at the beginning of the 1990s, Cypress Hill were one of the few to enjoy crossover success on both sides of the Atlantic - especially with their 1993 sophomore album Black Sunday - with rapper B-Real's unique voice on tracks like 'Insane in the Brain' becoming a regular fixture on even mainstream radio stations.

They've released a further seven albums since then and became the first Latino hip-hop group to get their own star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame, but Black Sunday remains one of their finest records and the album joins our list of Vinyl Week exclusives this year with a new version pressed onto white vinyl and limited to only 850 copies.

Phil Lynott – Solo in Soho

25a0qtJ.jpg

Best known, of course, for his time as frontman of legendary rockers Thin Lizzy, Phil Lynott also enjoyed a brief solo career before his tragic and untimely demise in 1986, with his first full-length offering arriving in 1980. Named after Good Earth Studios in London's Soho district where most of the album was recorded (save for a few sessions recorded in the Bahamas), his solo debut features guest appearances from several collaborators including Mark Knopfler, Huey Lewis, Midge Ure, among others.

Solo in Soho is one of our Vinyl Week exclusives this year and also becomes a new addition to hmv's exclusive 1921 Series, with a new reissue arriving in stores on August 15. Our exclusive 1921 edition is pressed onto black vinyl and limited to 1000 copies.

Derek and The Dominos – Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs

25a0qtJ.jpg

One of a variety of guises that guitarist Eric Clapton appeared under during the 1960s and 70s, along with stints in Cream, Blind Faith and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Derek and the Dominos formed while helping George Harrison was making his first post-Beatles recording All Things Must Pass, eventually becoming a vehicle for some of Clapton's own compositions during that time. Most famous of all of these, of course, is 'Layla', a song written by Clapton about his infatuation with Harrison's wife, Patti Boyd.

Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs was their first and only album and the LP joins our list of Vinyl Week exclusives this year with a new version pressed onto stunning transparent yellow vinyl and limited to an extremely small run of 325 copies.

New York Dolls – New York Dolls

25a0qtJ.jpg

Predating both punk and glam rock, when New York Dolls formed in 1971 they were an eye-catching proposition even by the standards of the New York club scene, and while their brash, androgynous style was mocked by some at the time, the band became a huge influence on everyone from the Sex Pistols to The Smiths, despite having burned out and disbanded within five years of their formation (although they did briefly reunite in 2004).

Their first two albums remain some of their most influential work, especially their eponymous 1973 debut album New York Dolls, which is another to join our list of Vinyl Week limited editions this year. Their debut arrives in stores on Saturday August 15th and is pressed onto pink vinyl, with just 300 copies available.

Nina Simone – I Put A Spell On You

25a0qtJ.jpg

Over the course of a long and extraordinary career, Nina Simone recorded and released many fine albums, but her 1965 offering I Put A Spell On You surely has a claim to being one of her finest ever. Featuring two of her most well-known hits in the title track and a rendition of 'Feeling Good' that has pretty much become the song's definitive version, this is Nina Simone at her bewitching best.

The album is one of our Vinyl Week limited editions for 2020 and comes pressed onto yellow vinyl, with an extremely limited 400 copies up for grabs.

Creed – Greatest Hits

25a0qtJ.jpg

American rockers Creed may not have enjoyed as much commercial success in the UK s they did back home, but for much of the 1990s they were a commercial juggernaut in the US with each of their first three albums all being certified platinum several times over. Their Greatest Hits album first emerged in 2004 shortly after the band's initial split, but is revived in all its glory as part of our Vinyl Week line-up this year.

Their Greatest Hits collection includes most of their best-known tunes, including the 'My Sacrifice' and 'With Arms Wide Open', to name just a couple, is one of our limited editions this year, with a new version pressed onto red vinyl and limited to just 400 copies.
