Blimey when you look at some of these locations, makes you wonder which are the ones staying open!!
Our branch in Plymouth which is a large one storey shop is going. That leaves basically charity shops, supermarkets and odd independent specialist shops.
That leaves a city of 1/3 million people with no real physical media store.
Up the road in Exeter they have lost theirs as well, with the same outcome as us.
Lord only knows where are nearest store will be.
So basically down in this neck of the woods we are left with trying to grab online sales.
Thats alot of people out of jobs down here again.
If any HMV staff are reading this...
Thank You for all your work and dedication to physical media, we on this forum really appreciated it.

HMV on-line shop is gone

I have seen mentioned sunrise did not purchase the website business setup as to how accurate that is I don't know for sure

Either sunrise will setup their own on-line store or a different company does the on-line shop business

If you visit HMV on-line at the moment it's just a info website on music and films
It don't have option to order on-line

The administrators of HMV, KPMG, has released its list of HMV stores planned for closure.

They include the flagship Oxford Street branch, the location of its first store.

The alphabetical list follows:

That's sad to hear that the flagship store (the first store) is closing.

Sunrise Records in Canada doesn't have an online business. They have a website but nothing can be ordered through it.
They don't ship anything. All purchases are made in store. The website doesn't even show prices.

As I mentioned in venom thread HMV on-line is a separate business to HMV stores and run by a different company

Sunrise purchased HMV retail high street shops business not the on-line shop business

As to if the same company as before or a new company will get on-line business back operating It's not known yet

HMV is closing all of it's London stores?
There will be a Fopp store in London

London rent/rates and overheads high for business and main reason why HMV london store closing

It's best if you own a retail store building in london than be renting it from a landlord

Some of the smaller stores in some locations not closing might not have as much turnover compared to some of the stores closing but due to less running costs make them more favourable to keep open

That could be the reason that there aren't any Sunrise Records stores in Toronto, Canada. They have stores in shopping malls in surrounding areas but none actually in Toronto.

WOW that is really surprising. I wish he had saved HMV in Canada. I know Sunrise moved into some of the stores left vacant by HMV here in Canada but unfortunately not in the vacant store in my city. My concern here is that if this doesn't work out what effect it might have down the road for Sunrise in Canada. Both chains could go out of business. I wonder if this will have any effect on exclusive steelbooks at Sunrise Canada.

@Drum18 @kaw @Leprekon @rj531 @Leafs17 @Shadow of Light @Actarus @JackieBoy

Heard the news earlier today and can't say I was shocked to hear it.

HMV came to Canada went belly up. Sunrise takes over. HMV goes into administration in the UK. Sunrise takes over. Well played! :)

But in all seriousness, quite a few people lost jobs (or will be), once the dust settles but here and there. Let's hope that Sunrise can make a difference, bring HMV exclusives to Canada and beat the crap out of Best Buy Canada (yes, I'm still bitter that FutureShop no longer exists! :spoil:). I do have a good relationship with those that work at the Metrotown location and even before the take over, they let me in that many of their vinyl record exclusives, among other items, were the same as the ones at HMV in the UK. This just opens the door wider, hopefully, for more to flow through.

Cheers!

HMV on-line limited is the name of the company looking after the on-line store

Website has listed the on-line store is still in administration

I wonder will there be a buyer for the on-line store.

It could be weeks/months before we see on-line store back operating or not at all

Too bad about all the employees losing their job, and also sad if the online store eventually disappers. Never thought that when I last walked out of the Oxford St store a couple of years ago, that would be the last. Looks like the Liverpool one isn’t closing for now though so gonna pop in there whenever I’m over there.

I am in London now, visited Fopp yesterday eve, wanted to check HMV as well this afternoon, but the shop was already closed. They could have waited 1 more day...

Sad to hear of the store closures, and a bit concerned about the online store disappearing. I did a bit of digging regarding the online store and HMV companies, and there are quite a few listed. Including :
HMV GROUP PENSION TRUSTEES LIMITED
PURE HMV LOYALTY LIMITED
HMV ECOMMERCE LIMITED
HMV ONLINE LIMITED
HMV RETAIL LIMITED

Doing a company financial check on these companies show on the most part dire figures, with massive losses and liabilities, which year on year have almost doubled with the losses (upto 2017) with one notable exception, HMV ECOMMERCE LIMITED, this is the one I believe directly administers the online shop, I don't believe HMV ONLINE LIMITED does, it may handle the HMV.COM and online social media presence and so on, the figures for HMV ONLINE LIMITED are awful with over £2 million in losses/liabilities .

In all my correspondence from the Online store including emails, addresses, payments and refunds they all are referred to in name as HMV ECOMMERCE LIMITED.

HMV ECOMMERCE LIMITED is an entirely different beast, it shows a very healthy financial status according to the 2017 figures it has £335.000 in cash, a NET worth of £630.000, Assets of £2.176.000 and liabilities of £1.743.000. The figures are almost double of the previous 3 years, year on year, so a healthy sounding balance sheet.

So I have to wonder, regarding the online shop, I simply can't believe it will not come back, it's clearly such a money spinner, it would be funny if Sunrise rejected it or if it is still negotiating, but imagine if Zavvi or Amazon put in bids and won ?, that would be all kinds of crazy, you can't have HMV exclusive items on sale in HMV shops and the online shop run by say, zavvi selling them, just wouldn't make any sense.

I'd be worried if Sunrise decide to close the online shop and stick to bricks and mortar for the UK market as well, it is admirable thinking, but I fear completely the wrong direction to go for the UK.

Fingers crossed the online site comes back online soon !

On another note in regards to the stores that got closed some might be reopening if a deal with landlords can be reached

"HMV’s online store is currently shut down while it is being revamped, but Putman says he hopes it will reopen in the next few weeks.
He wants to add services such as the ability to check if a certain title is in a particular store in future."

I wish he would do that with Sunrise Records in Canada and add an online store while he's at it.

Interesting to hear but I think he has a big job the way physical media sales are declining. I hope they are around for a long time though. Now I’m hoping the website does come back aswell as there are no HMV’s near to me.
