Finally got around to see this. Seing all those negative reviews online by both career critics and movie goers I feel like most of them actually didn't understood the first movie at all, which this movie even talks about directly. I thought this new one was a pretty fitting sequel, not a masterpiece or anything, but the first one wasn't one either imo. I hope they'll release a 2-movie pack at some point, would love to get these together in 4K.

Didn’t hate this and honestly reckon it has all the ingredients to become a cult classic. I always got the impression a lot went in with their minds already made up about hating it, because it was the “trendy” thing to do. Only thing that grated on me after a while were some of the OTT musical segments… I was originally up for it and do understand/appreciate why they went that route, but it wasn’t always necessary and kinda took me out of the film at times. Need a rewatch to properly make up my mind about the film, but I really hope Manta do a premium edition.

Yeah am not sure why SO much hate.
Its not that bad at all.

sure the ending I have a couple issues with but I also respect it for going there too.
I thought the ending...right at the end, was a fantastic choice; even the lead up to the denouement was a pretty brave decision. I think it was always in the back of mind going forward into this movie that things are/were not as they seem to be. As far as I understood it, the film was always about mental illness and social indifference. Full stop.

It wasn't a terrible movie. It's certainly not a great movie but it had it's merits no doubt. I actually enjoyed several of the musical numbers, particularly Arthur singing onto Lee's answering machine. Love that song anyway.
My main problem was the story or lack thereof. The last few court sequences felt way undercooked and the character of Arthur felt like he'd fizzled out by the time the big swing happened.
140 minutes felt self indulgent and with the fat trimmed and a tighter script especially, I think it would have been pretty great.

6 out 10 for me

Watched it last night. Ultimately I found it a bit boring. Majority of the songs didn’t hit and I didn’t like Joaquín’s singing voice however the look, the acting and tone were all great. The style and visuals of the musical numbers were fine for me it was just the singing. I didn’t hate it either and the end didn’t bother me one bit. See it coming a mile off and I suppose it had to happen but yeah just found myself bored through quite a bit of it.

Still would like to pick up a decent steel (not the dual upside down design) to sit with the first film (which I do think is a masterpiece) and I’d take a premium edition from manta but I won’t be OC’ing like I did for the first film. Just the one premium

The guts and unexpectedness of that VERY end, I definitely appreciate.
Just not sure if we are still supposed to see him as the same unreliable narrator as the first either, which adds another spin maybe.

Some of the songs were a tad long for me and I LOVE musicals.

I agree with you on Arthur seemingly, fizzling out. Felt a little whiplash-y on first viewing. Though the stuff in the taxi was 100% on brand for his character. So am a bit torn. Some more time allowing the change to slowly unravel would maybe have suited better.

There definitely feels like a good movie was in there Somewhere

Managed to watch it over two evenings, as its 'songs' are extremely tiring and annoying. It's very professionally made, some nice shots, like with the umbrellas, or touching/sad ones, with the tortured Joker in prison standing laughing tied to a pole, small moments like that. But I saw its ending coming from the beginning, with one intense looking character in the back, and I hated the false hope. It sure is a big F U to the viewer, like Tarantino said, but I say the same back to this film. F it, not buying it, not paying for it.
