Steven Spielberg has confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that Colin Trevorrow, who directed 2015’s smash hit Jurassic World, will return to helm Jurassic World 3 for Universal Pictures. J.A. Bayona directed the second installment, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which will open on June 22, 2018. Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed, The Book of Henry) was previously scheduled to direct Star Wars: Episode IX, but was reportedly let go from the project last year and eventually replaced by J.J. Abrams.

“Colin Trevorrow is going write and direct the third ‘Jurassic World’ story,” said Spielberg, who will also executive produce the sixth overall installment in the Jurassic Park franchise. Jurassic World 3 (as it is being called for now) will open in theaters nationwide on Friday, June 11, 2021.

From CBR:

The plot of Universal Pictures’ Jurassic World was largely predicated on the creation of a hybrid dinosaur, the Indominus Rex, to attract visitors to the struggling theme park. However, while the upcoming sequel, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, will follow suit with its predecessor by introducing the Indoraptor, executive producer/co-writer Colin Trevorrow has confirmed that the concept of hybrid dinos won’t extend to the third installment in the planned trilogy.

“I’m looking forward to, in the third film, getting a little back into the Paleontological, wild animal, true dinosaur nature of all of it,” Trevorrow told Total Film. He then definitively added that the Indoraptor will be the last hybrid dinosaur in the Jurassic World trilogy.

The concept of hybrid dinosaurs was introduced to the franchise in 2015’s Jurassic World with the aforementioned Indominus Rex — the result of combined genetic material from such dinosaurs as the Tyrannosaurus and the Velociraptor. From what we’ve seen in trailers thus far, the Indoraptor appears to be a smaller, equally vicious version of the Indominus, but with the theme park now abandoned, its creation was likely spawned from Vic Hoskins’ desire to use dinosaurs as military weapons.

Bryce Dallas Howard teases original cast return for Jurassic World 3

It’s already been about a year since the long-running dinosaur action franchise Jurassic Park graced the screen with the second installment in the sequel trilogy, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and while development is still underway on the third and final installment, star Bryce Dallas Howard has hinted that the original protagonists from the first film could return for the new movie!

In an interview with MTV News for her role in the new acclaimed rock biopic Rocketman, Howard remained cryptic on if she would be working with original stars Sam Neill (The Commuter), Laura Dern (Big Little Lies) and Jeff Goldblum (Thor: Ragnarok), but the excitement is clear on her face and gives a strong hint that they will return.

Goldblum was last seen in the franchise’s previous installment, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, albeit in a very brief role reprising the smooth-talking chaos theorist and mathematician Dr. Ian Malcolm, while Neill and Dern haven’t been seen in the films since the third installment, Jurassic Park III, in which Neill’s Dr. Alan Grant took center stage and Dern’s Dr. Ellie Sattler appeared in a cameo. Dern has been adamant about wanting to return to the franchise for the final film, stating that if it’s going to be the end, Ellie has to be a part of the story.

Steven Spielberg and Colin Trevorrow return to executive produce Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment’s Jurassic World 3, with Trevorrow once again directing the next chapter in one of the biggest franchises in the history of cinema. Producers Frank Marshall and Pat Crowley once again partner with Spielberg and Trevorrow in leading the filmmakers for this installment. Joining the Jurassic team for the first time is Emily Carmichael (upcoming Pacific Rim Uprising, The Black Hole), who will craft the Jurassic World 3 screenplay with Trevorrow. They will work off a story by Derek Connolly and Trevorrow, who together co-wrote Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Well...I knew they had to continue the franchise. I mean, there's dinosaurs loose on the mainland now, even a T-Rex. Also there's that evil geneticist loose with all the formulas, as long as he's alive there's always going to be trouble brewing in the form of a dinosaur.
