Was this actually any good?.... I got a vague memory of seeing it as a kid (on VHS), being a little bored, never re-watched it.

....In the same way that Star Wars is cheesy. Subjective. It's a beautifully shot fun fantasy. (DP Peter Suchinsky shot this right after he shot The Empire Strikes Back)

Did you forget to read where I wrote - "I love it"
It's gorgeous of course.
The recorded VHS was a staple in our household alongside The Ice Pirates and The Beastmaster.
Of course it's cheesy.
It was objectively cheesy in the 80s. Krull had so much dialogue that would be considered cringy now.
Most mid budget fantasy films from that era were. That's just how styles age across generations. Anyone coming to watch Krull in 2025 who hadn't seen it before would of course consider it cheesy. Hence my reply to a member who hadn't seen it for decades and couldn't remember it at all.

As you say, the locations are fantastic throughout, especially the Cortina mountain ranges in Italy. Gorgeous scenery in the Dolomites.
Funnily, I was lucky enough to go skiing in that area several times in the mid 2000s. A beautiful place.

Don't forget the Harryhausen-esque spider sequence!
I think this lands in the 'solid fantasy' bucket with movies like DRAGONSLAYER, rather than the cheesier fare like BEATMASTER, NEVERENDING STORY and THE DARK CRYSTAL. I think it leans more adult than 'for kids'.
I also loved that they used top notch British actors like Freddie Jones, Alun Armstrong and Francesca Annis. (And that Neeson fella. Lol)
I think the only real weak link is the casting of Ken Marshall. (And the weird choice of dubbingu Lysette Anthony).
I, too, watched that to death on VHS- and was floored when I finally saw it in HD Widescreen. Pan and scan VHS was hiding how beautifully it was mounted.I would love to see it on the big screen.

I love this but now wondering should I double dip as I already have the HMV Premire edition which has the Blu-ray and dvd plus poster and art cards.

But then I love a steel and if they keep that art with gloss… but the back if like USA is a waste of space.

Ummm decisions
