Sidney Poitier stars in Lilies of the Field (1963), in the role that made history when he won the first Academy Award (for Best Actor) bestowed upon an African American male. He plays an itinerant handyman who helps a group of immigrant nuns build a chapel, firmly cementing their belief that he’s been sent to them courtesy of the will of God. Produced and directed by Ralph Nelson, co-starring Lilia Skala, and featuring a lovely score by Jerry Goldsmith, available on this Twilight Time release as an isolated track.

“Many factors combine in the overall success of the film, notably the restrained direction by Ralph Nelson, a thoroughly competent screenplay by James Poe [from a novel by William E. Barrett], and, of course, Poitier’s own standout performance.” – Variety

“Poitier is all hard-working decency and will-to-succeed personified. Skala’s steely Mother Superior thankfully seasons the feelgoodery.”
– Time Out London
