LittleBigPlanet, abbreviated to LBP and developed under the title The Next Big Thing, is a puzzle platformer and user-generated content video game for the PlayStation 3, first announced on 7 March 2007, by Phil Harrison at the 2007 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, California. It is developed by Media Molecule, a British company founded in part by Rag Doll Kung Fu creator Mark Healey, and published by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

The game revolves around the player's control of small avatars, known as Sackboys or Sackgirls owing to their appearance, in a variety of platforming scenarios. Though the game features a set of pre-built levels for players to explore, of equal importance is the game's customisable nature, from altering the player's character and personal space, to building entirely new objects and levels, and then sharing and playing them online as part of the LittleBigPlanet community.

littlebigplanet_lgc.jpg

Originally intended for a release in mid-to-late October, a last-minute delay involving a licensed song in the game's soundtrack delayed the game's release worldwide. It was released in North America and Japan at the end of October 2008, and in Europe at the beginning of November 2008. Seen as an important title for Sony and the PlayStation 3, the game received an overwhelmingly positive reaction from critics, who praised the game's presentation including its graphics, physics and audio, as well as its gameplay and large array of customisable and online features, including its scope and future potential based on user-created content; minor criticism was reserved for some specific elements of the gameplay mechanics and level creation facilities.

Game of the Year Edition Detailed on PS.Blog.

blog.us.playstation.com/2009/08/17/announcing-littlebigplanet-–-game-of-the-year-edition/

First off, you’ll get the full award-winning LittleBigPlanet gameplay experience, or as we like to call it “Play Create Share” – ok, that was a bit to ‘infomercially’ (sorry), but you get the idea. Everything that made LittleBigPlanet one of the biggest games on the PS3 is in there.

Next, to give our new fans a taste of the over 1,000,000 user-generated levels available on the PlayStation Network, Media Molecule has hand-picked 18 extraordinary people to Create bonus levels specifically for the GOTY edition – complete with interviews with each creator. We loved how these levels turned out and hope you will to.

And, for everyone looking for a great value, the GOTY edition includes 7 packs from the PlayStation Store. These packs feature tons of costumes, stickers, objects, new levels and the “Paintinator” to amplify the fun you’ll have. Once more, these are on the disc FREE (that’s nearly a $30 value)
Content Packs* include:
1) Metal Gear Solid Level Pack – featuring the “Paintinator” paintball gun
2) Metal Gear Solid Costumes
3) Monsters Costumes
4) Monsters Pack
5) History Costumes
6) History Pack
7) Animals Costumes

Finally, as a peek at the next game in the “Play, Create, Share” family, a limited supply of LittleBigPlanet – Game of the Year Editions will include a special voucher code for the upcoming ModNation Racers Online Beta. This is your chance to play ModNation Racers before the game comes out in 2010. If you haven’t checked out ModNation yet, and you’re a big-time racing fan, always dreamed of creating your own track, or you’re into vinyl art – head on over to www.ModNation.com and register.

Mystery LittleBigPlanet announcement coming today

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) has let slip that a major announcement will be made today regarding the LittleBigPlanet franchise.

Writing on the U.S. PlayStation Blog yesterday in response to reader questions following the unveiling of the LittleBigPlanet: Game of the Year Edition, SCEA’s Mark Valledor commented: “Don’t worry…wait until tomorrow for “bigger” announcement.”

Naturally, all points to Sony Europe’s GamesCom press conference, which kicks off today in Cologne, Germany at 9.30am PST/5.30pm BST. In the meantime, feel free to speculate on the possibilities of this ‘bigger’ announcement in the comments section below. Fingers crossed for LittleBigPlanet 2.

Stay tuned for more information.

GamesCom: LittleBigPlanet getting water, finally

Fans of LittleBigPlanet have routinely been asking for one major addition to the game – water. Your requests have been filled as Media Molecule announced today that water will be added to the game in a future update.

It will be exciting to see how water is incorporated into the game. Will sack people have to wear underwater breathing gear, or will you get unlimited time under water? Jumping out of water will likely be a chore, but jumping in will probably offer a great deal of joy.

Check out this video trailer from Media Molecule, and get ready for water, coming soon to LBP.

It’s time to test the waters. Media Molecule has posted beta trial signups to test the newly announced water feature.

There is a form to fill out at Media Molecule’s website. You’ll need a PSN account (make sure it is set up to accept emails from Sony Computer Entertainment), be 18-years or older, and agree to various terms and conditions.

LBP dev was worried Kojima-san wouldn't like MGS content

Media Molecule has admitted the company had its concerns as to whether or not Hideo Kojima would approve of LittleBigPlanet’s lovable MGS-inspired SackBoy caricatures and assorted content.

“We were slightly worried that our first attempts weren’t going to go down too well,” Mark Healey told VG247. “We see Metal Gear Solid as quite serious, a hardcore, intense thing. Obviously, what we did was quite cute, almost satirical. But they loved it. They’ve got a great sense of humour and they really embraced it.”

Fellow Media Molecule co-founder Kareem Ettouney also chipped in, revealing that Kojima-san was particularly impressed with the results and that the Metal Gear Solid team were fully supportive of the project.

“It was really great,” he said, adding, “We met Mr Kojima in America, and he was telling us how excited he was, how much he liked the results.”

“We got a lot of support from the Metal Gear Solid team – beautiful assets. Everyone was really excited. It was a very smooth example of collaboration which celebrated the two brands and retained the identity of the two.”

watchmenlbpdlc.jpg

It's been a while since the release of the last high-profile LittleBigPlanet DLC. DC's going to rectify that with its upcoming costume and sticker pack, inspired by the classic graphic novel Watchmen. As commenters on Media Molecule's official blog pointed out, it appears that Dr. Manhattan is missing from the pack -- but that might make sense considering the character's penchant for walking around naked with his bits showing. That doesn't sound appropriate for a kid-friendly game!

Of course, somehow a Sackboy version of Rorschach is, though ...

LittleBigPlanet music pack out today

If you are a fan of Media Molecule’s LittleBigPlanet, then you likely have a soft spot for the killer music that fills the Planet’s many, many levels. Today, MM is releasing an original music pack for LBP containing interactive music to personalize your levels.

This is a completely new kind of pack for LBP, and includes three fully interactive music tracks “to enhance your levels.” The pack includes tracks “Tea By The Sea,” “Well Trained,” and “Wise Owl,” all by Mat Clark.

The MM music pack, available today, will cost £2.39 / €2.99 / USD $3.99. The pack also includes music themed stickers. We certainly look forward to seeing some music related levels.

A Level Design Competition

Do you believe in fairytales? If so, this is the contest for you!
If you can create the best level based on a classic fairytale, you just may end up as the queen or king of your own LBP fairytale!
But this is no normal fairytale, this is a LittleBigLand fairytale.
So in one way or another you have to incorporate LittleBigPlanet in the story.

How do you do that ?
That's up to you, just make sure your fairytale level has a littleBigPlanet twist in it and is based on one of the fairytales from the list below. create a level based on a fairytale with LittleBigPlanet built into the story.
For example:
1) Key characters from the original fairytale story replaced with people from the
Media Molecule team and famous people from the community of LittleBigPlanet and other people involved with littlebigplanet.
2) Key parts of the original fairytale story replaced with the story of the rise of
Media Molecule and LittleBigPlanet.
3) Names of the level can be changed to something of littlebigplanet, for example: Alice in LittleBigPlanet.
4) You can put LittleBigPlanet logos in your level to get the right atmosphere.
5) Change the location of where the fairytale takes place, the fairytale castle can be the Media Molecule head quarters?

but above all use your imagination to input a LittleBigPlanet theme into the level rather then re-telling the original fairytale story. that is what will make your level stand out from the rest.

FAQs

How Much Does Water Cost?: If you wish to create levels containing water, you must purchase the Pirates of the Caribbean Premium Level Kit, available from 22nd December ‘09 on the LittleBigStore and PlayStation®Store priced at £4.79 / €5.99 / US $5.99 / AUS $ 9.95 / NZD $11.50.

However - even if you do not own this pack, you will still be able to play community levels containing water, just as you can play levels with the Paintinator in without owning the Metal Gear Solid Premium Level Kit.

How Can I Tweak Water, and what Can be Tweaked About it?: In Create Mode, Open up Popit and head into the Tools Bag
Press R2 to scroll along to the Global Controls
Here you will find several water settings:

Waves - Choose between as still as a lake or a rolling ocean
Water Colour - Choose the colour of the water
Water Murkiness - Choose how murky you want the water to be
Water Bits - Choose how much confetti you want in your water

Additionally there are some tools in the Tools Bag that can be placed within a level that can be used to interact with water.
Global Water Object - Allows you to change the water settings in different parts of the level.

Scuba Gear - Allows Sackboy to breath Underwater
Bubble Machine - Emits bubbles of air to help you survive underwater
Water Switch - A switch that activates when submerged in water.

Can Water be Poured, Placed, or placed as a Material?: Water can only be set as a global water level, which can then be altered with the Global Water Object throughout a level. It cannot be placed as a material to make slides, waterfalls, rivers, etc, or placed within a small area to create a pool.

Can Sackboy Breathe Under Water?: Sackboy can hold his breath for 30 seconds, after which time his air will run out and he will pop! You can replenish Sackboy’s air supply by breathing special bubbles from a Bubble Machine, and this will reset the timer to 30 seconds.
There is a Scuba Gear power up that can be placed in a level that will allow Sackboy to breath under water indefinitely.

LittleBigPlanet Is Also Playable... In 3D!!!

Sony was among the many home electronics makers getting behind the 3D revolution at CES 2010, offering a handful of PlayStation 3 games playable in 3D. The latest PS3 game to get the 3D makeover? LittleBigPlanet.

Media Molecule's DIY platformer joins games like Super Stardust HD and Gran Turismo 5 as one of many possible titles that could be playable in three dimensions later this year when Sony issues new PS3 firmware. Eurogamer got a chance to see LittleBigPlanet in action, a game that could benefit more than others with greater visual depth.

Eurogamer teases more information about the 3D version of LittleBigPlanet in the coming days, which we'll be waiting for with glasses on. In the meantime, Super Stardust HD excepted—currently the best implementation of aftermarket 3D—are there any PlayStation 3 games you'd like to see in 3D?

http://kotaku.com/5452302/littlebigplanet-is-also-playable-in-3d
