LOTR: Theatrical vs Extended Edition

So I hear a lot of dispute over this, so I wanted to know, what's the difference? Is there enough substantial story in the EE that is worth the wait? or is it just extending a few scenes and nothing really that affects the story line?

I mean the movies are already past 3 hours I couldn't sit through 45 minutes more if there was nothing really for me to consider it lol. See where I am going with this? I just want to know, what is the difference?

it's like an hour worth of movie on each one. And I HEAR that there's going to be an ad for the extended versions inside the theatrical versions. Kind of a slap in the face huh?

I'm getting extended. If I'm going to put in 3 hours I might as well put in 4... lol.

hmmm I just don't know if it's worth waiting for it, I've never seen the EE.
