Directed by Lien Yi Chi, the Taiwan film Make Up walks a fine line juggling crime mystery, lesbian romance, and death discourse into its unique story. As the title promises, the film is set in the fascinating world of mortuary cosmetics and funeral services. Somber mortuary makeup artist Min Hsiu (Nikki Hsieh, One Day) takes her job very seriously. She advocates hygienic procedures, and takes care to help the departed look their best on their final journey. One day, a body she recognizes is brought to her mortuary - the body of her high school teacher Chen Ting (Sonia Sui, Black & White). Detective Kuo (Bryant Chang, Eternal Summer) suspects Chen Ting's psychologist husband Cheng Fu (Matt Wu, Da Yu: Touch of Fate) of foul play, and enlists Min Hsiu to help investigate him. Min Hsiu's memories of her illicit relationship with Chen Ting come surging back as she is reluctantly pulled into the mystery.
