Max Payne 3, the much anticipated follow-up to Max Payne 2, is in development by Rockstar Vancouver, will tell the story of a retired police detective "embroiled in a world of corruption, turmoil and intense violence."

"We're starting a new chapter of Max's life with this game," said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. "This is Max as we've never seen him before, a few years older, more world-weary and cynical than ever. We experience the downward spiral of his life after the events of Max Payne 2 and witness his last chance for salvation."

Max is now bald, bearded and addicted to pain killers. Which has an affect on the gameplay. Max has hit rock bottom in every sense of the word and has found himself in Sao Palo, Brazil.

"Since leaving the NYPD and New York itself behind, Max has drifted from bad to worse. Double-crossed and a long way from home, Max is now trapped in a city full of violence and bloodshed, using his weapons and instincts in a desperate search for the truth and a way out."

Max Payne 3 is looking visually very similar to Uncharted 2 (stunning), with vibrant colors and fully destructible environments - all powered by Rockstar’s RAGE engine and a procedural animation system. Expect tons of battle in urban ghetto Latin American neighborhoods with plenty of new weapons. Bullet Time is back in but will be more visceral and ultra-violent. The now industry standard cover system will also play a part in Max’s new Brazilian adventure, as well as day and night cycles. Even more good news is that Max Payne 3 will indeed feature an online multiplayer mode.

Release Date: May 2012

First Max Payne 3 screenshots emerge

The first few screens of Max Payne 3 show us a more mature and weathered Max in a Brazilian city that appears to be, shall we say, a tropical paradise?

Max Payne 3 takes place 12 years after the events of the previous title. Rockstar Games? third-person shooter brings Max to S?o Paulo, Brazil, where he?s now employed in the private sector, working for a rich local family. The screens show our rough-and-tough protagonist gunning down thugs in the slums of Brazil. We mostly have back shots of Max, but he still appears fit enough to walk around the South American city with guns blazing.

Max Payne 3 has been delayed until some time after Halloween 2010, according to a press release from the game's publisher issued today.

The anticipated Rockstar sequel had been expected for release by then when last we heard from publisher Take Two Interactive.

Take-Two's update to investors indicates that L.A. Noire (also from Rockstar), Mafia II and Civilization V are all still planned for release sometime between August 1, 2010 and October 31.

The delay of a Rockstar game always stings, but the last delay turned out pretty well for gamers. Here's hoping a delayed Max Payne 3 turns out to be as good as the once-delayed Red Dead Redemption.

Presenting the official Max Payne 3 cover art that you'll find across digital retail starting today and on shelves this May.

The cover is an updated rendition of the artwork that originally accompanied the game's announcement last fall featuring a battle-scarred Max against the torrid backdrop of São Paulo's helicopter-strewn skyline - alongside the danger of the city's underground criminal element and one of its Brazilian bombshells,

PS. Updated OP with official release date and cover art.
