Metal Gear Solid (Metaru Gia Soriddo, commonly abbreviated as MGS) is a stealth action video game directed and written by Hideo Kojima.[5] The game was developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Japan and first published by Konami in 1998 for the PlayStation video game console. It is the third canonical title in the Metal Gear series, and the direct sequel to Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. The game featured an unprecedented amount of cinematic cut scenes rendered using the in-game engine and graphics, as well as voice acting in numerous codec sequences.[6]

The story of Metal Gear Solid takes place in 2005, south-west of Alaska in the Bering sea. It follows Solid Snake, a retired soldier who infiltrates a nuclear weapons disposal facility to neutralize the terrorist threat from FOXHOUND, a renegade special forces unit.[7] Snake must liberate two hostages, the head of DARPA and the president of a major arms manufacturer, confront the terrorists, and stop them from launching a nuclear strike.[8]

Metal Gear Solid was well-received, shipping more than six million copies,[9] and scoring an average of 94 out of 100 on the aggregate website Metacritic.[10] The commercial success of the title prompted the release of an expanded version for the PlayStation and PC, titled Metal Gear Solid: Integral;[11] and a remake, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes was later released for the Nintendo GameCube.[12][13] The game has also spawned numerous sequels, prequels, a port of the game to Windows PCs and spin-offs, including several games, a radio drama, comics, and a novel.

Solid Snake continues to get it done for Konami. Today, the Japanese game maker reported its results for the April-December period, saying that total revenues for the first nine months of its 2009 fiscal year grew 5.1 percent to ¥234 billion ($2.56 billion). Konami's profit margins also continued to outpace the year-ago period, given that net income rose 17.3 percent to ¥17.8 billion ($195 million).

Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, which was released exclusively for the PlayStation 3 in June, continued to be one of the company's top performers. The top-rated action adventure sold more than 4.5 million units in 2008, shifting approximately 500,000 additional copies in the October-December quarter.

For the first nine months of its current fiscal year, which runs from April 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009, Konami has sold 22.35 million software units across its various franchises. In addition to Metal Gear's gains, the publisher has been bolstered by the success of its Pro Evolution Soccer franchise, which has sold more than 7.41 million units during the nine-month period. Other top performers for the game company include Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia for the Nintendo DS, as well as installments in its perennial Dance Dance Revolution rhythm franchise.

Despite Konami's positive growth during the period, the publisher provided a warning to investors that the global economic downturn will have a negative impact on its full-year returns. Citing slower consumer spending and a strengthening of the yen, Konami revised its full-year revenue and profit outlook downward. The publisher now expects revenues to rise 3.2 percent to ¥307 billion ($3.36 billion) during the year, with profits now projected to grow a mere .3 percent to ¥18.5 billion ($203 million).

or any console for that matter, and not many people will disagree with me there. In fact the game has even won PS3Centers game of the year award. MGS4 has gone on to sell millions and continues to be Konami's top selling game along with one of the best selling games on PS3. Signs pointing towards a re-release like past MGS titles?

We don't know the truth to that answer but we do know something special is coming soon. Thanks to the numbers MGS4 will be receiving the prized title of Platinum next month. This means the game will come in a sleek new plastic wrap, gain even more attention, and the best part is that the game will be priced at only $25 USD. Thats an absolute quality deal in our books and we expect sales to only get better.

The announcement also came with the sugar coding of Silent Hill : Homecoming heading its way to PS3 the same day as Killzone 2 this Februray 27.

Time passes and trophies for Metal Gear Solid 4 if they have not learned anything, so we decided to contact Konami in that regard, but the response has not brought anything new. Currently there is no information about the trophies for MGS4 and I personally doubt that there will be in the months ahead.

While the game has its issues, that hasn't stopped players from all over the world clocking hours into Metal Gear Online. That, and buying expansion packs.

Famitsu has revealed the next expansion pack for MGO, expected for a March release. Dubbed "Scene," this expansion includes three new maps (Outer Outlet, Ravaged Riverfront, Hazard House) and two new characters (Vamp and Raiden). Its interesting to note that Ravaged Riverfront, a map previewed long before the game was released, has gone from a day setting to dusk.

Hello everyone - I’m excited to announce details of the new Metal Gear Online SCENE Expansion pack! Coming in March, there will be tons of new content to keep old and new players alike entertained: new maps, special characters, new gear, and of course a couple surprises.

First, I’m excited to announce that now, in order to make the SCENE Expansion more accessible, players will be able to use their PayPal account, along with their PlayStation Network Wallet, if they so choose, to purchase the SCENE Expansion.

For those players that want to get a head start on the action and pre-order SCENE through Metal Gear Online’s in-game shop or Konami’s shop, there’s a special gift in store. Once the pre-order period starts, one week before the release date, all players who pre-order SCENE will receive a special “cardboard man” head gear for free. It should definitely provide ample cover for any bad hair day.

Now for the stuff I know you all are most excited about, the new maps and characters!

The first new map is Outer Outlet, an all new environment that takes place in a commercial mall area made up of lots of buildings and subterranean areas. Multiple floors with openings onto the areas above and below will offer many unique vantage points from which to stage the action, while the décor will provide plenty of unexpected places to seek cover. It should be ideal for medium to long range battles.

Second is Hazard House, set in a huge three story mansion – a take on the one seen from Act II of the MGS4 single player game. Lots of doors, hallways, and blind corners, will make for intense claustrophobic combat.

Third is Ravaged Riverfront – a take on the Eastern European environment from Act III of the MGS4 single player game - with a large clock tower surrounded by lots of underground and underwater areas. Lots of clear space, perfect for long range attacks.

SCENE will also bring two long awaited, much requested, special characters to MGO – Raiden and Vamp, both with impressive special abilities and offensive power to spare! First is Vamp, knife-expert extraordinaire. You may be able to defeat him once, but that’s no guarantee he won’t be back for more! Second is Raiden, whose appearance belies his extraordinary skill and agility in combat. They are formidable opponents, or one of them can be a great ally to have on your team. Yes, you will indeed be able to have a multiplayer battle between Raiden and Vamp, which is a fun as it looks! More specifics about their abilities will be revealed soon!

Next week, we will be releasing a trailer for SCENE on the PlayStation Network and the PlayStation Blog, so please look out for that. There’s even more on the way with the SCENE Expansion – stay tuned to the PlayStation Blog in the coming weeks for more details!

Konami is still on the fence about Trophies, despite having ten months to work on the addition. Brandon Laurino of Konami Online leapt on numerous posts on the official PlayStation Blogs and responded by saying "On the subject of MGS4/MGO Trophies and Konami ID - we hear you. We have been circulating these issues internally, and we will report back as soon as we are able". Konami need to get this done quickly with all the amazing games coming up!

mgo sucked ... Id like trophies for MGS4 , but not ones for MGO which they would obviously make ... Id love a platinum MGS4 but jeez MGO blowed.

MGO did not suck i just think it was something way different and not a lot of people were willing to give it a shot. Heck i was pretty damn good at it :scat:

In the latest Kojima Productions Report podcast, we learn that Metal Gear Online will be receiving an update on June 16th. The update will allow Scene Pack owners to get access to a new Shadow Moses map and update 1.33 will be made available for US and European gamers.

Also, tomorrow is the 1yr anniversary of Metal Gear Solid 4. We should also hear about some new announcement tomorrow. It could be a trophy patch, or just more information on this MGO update.
