This was really disappointing, overly long, too many repeat set pieces from the previous films, forced plot threads trying to tie every film in the franchise into this endgame and characters that due to most of them only debuting in the last film I didn't have much of a connection to (example why kill off Rebecca Ferguson's character last time out just to replace her with Hayley Atwell? Could have just kept Ferguson around instead surely?).
Overall if this is to be the last film (and it really should be now) then a letdown of a way to go out

Just saw this. It's the exact same as the first part for me: It was okay, nothing more. I already said this for the first part: In my opinion they shot themselves in the foot with this whole sentient AI topic. It's just too complicated and extreme to actually tackle in an intelligent and logical way. The plot gets convoluted and is overly relying on absolute coincidences happening for no reason at all and at the most convenient timings.
You can also see that they struggle writing these Tom Cruise action set peaces around this AI topic and that it's just too much. The reason why they end up in these airplanes is just as dumb as the reason for why Tom Cruise had to drive off of a cliff with a motor cycle. Of course it looks cool, but it's just obvious that they had these stunts and wrote the film around them.
Edit: Oh yeah, add to that that both Reckoning movies are 6 hours in total is just ridiculous, especially for what they actually have to say and deliver.
I don't mind them being longer as I enjoy these films.
I do draw the line though at Zach Snyder extending cuts. Love suckered punch extended but others felt wayyYh over bloated that should have been brought down like Rebel Moon extended feels like an entirely different film then the theatrical version
Not exactly, she said she didn't renew her contract beyond the 3 films as her character didn't have as much screen time as she did in the previous films so my point stands
SO I just got back from watching it. Its a spectacular mess... or I should rather say its spectacular AND its a mess.
Lets start with the positives. Its phenomenal watching this on IMAX. I honestly don't know why you would see it any other way. There are 2 set pieces which are worth the price of admission; The Underwater Scene and the Airplane Sequence. I loved both and thought they were amazing especially knowing Cruise was doing the stunts, and thats why you buy the ticket.
the negatives... The first hour is pretty bad. It honestly feels like you're watching a "Previously on mission impossible..." rehash and trying to fit it into the story with exposition over and over reminding people about what happened in the last film and the other instalments. Once we get past that though, it gets a bit better.
The movie feels long... and thats cause it is. I'm not sure why it needed to be, a lot (especially in that first hour) could have been cut.
It also felt like they were trying too hard to tie together aspects of the other films into this one. There are things like the rabbits foot that normally I would have been pumped to have it call back but it didn't work for me. And making Shea Whigham's character be the son of Phelps was utterly ridiculous.
Something that I was really hoping would happen is that Ilsa's Death in the last film was actually a ruse, a way for them to trick the entity in thinking she wasn't in play and then she would show up last minute or something to complete the mission and it was a plan all along. But nope. She actually died, making me dislike these last two films even more. Should have just ended with Fallout, it was the perfect ending.
I also was hoping Brandt would make an appearance, even if it was just a cameo. But I guess they didn't want Renner back? or he didn't want to/couldn't do it?
Either way his absence the past few films without it ever being addressed was a mistake on their part.
Some of the writing in this movie is pretty bad. Normally I really like what McQuarrie does but something really felt off on this one.
Going back to that airplane sequence, it is honestly a bit of a re-hash from the Fallout helicopter scene plot wise. But I'll forgive that because its still great.
And finally, I think why both Reckoning films didn't sit well with me is I really don't like The Entity and Gabriel as the villains. It didn't work for me last time and they didn't work for me this time. They don't feel like Mission Impossible. Lane and the Syndicate were much more compelling antagonists. And I wish they would have kept going with that instead.
The Mission Impossible franchise has been one of my favorites. Fallout and MI3 might be 2 of my favorite action films ever. So its a little disappointing to see it go out this way. But it could be worse. At least this wasn't MI2.

It’s a lot of exposition, cuts to flashbacks, and a narrative driven by Macguffins broken up with 2 action set pieces that even though probably practical, are so ridiculous it basically comes off as Sci Fi. Not to mention it seems like the writers have a tenuous grasp of AI. I’m not trying to crap on it too much. It just doesn’t live up to the expectations they built with how exemplary Ghost Protocol-Fallout were. As a stand alone movie or just a popcorn flick it’s pretty enjoyable but there is definitely some fat they could cut from the almost 3 hour runtime. If you want to turn your mind off for a few hours I recommend checking this one out at matinee price.
I’m going to be honest I was very disappointed and half way through just wanted it to end. So many plot points I just got confused and switched off. They should have gone with something different but by splitting the story between 2 films meant they were in a rock or had place. One of the weakest with fallout being the best.
I enjoyed it all thoroughly. Watched it in Dolby screen and the bass was tremendous throughout. It really added to the suspense building. That underwater scene was fantastic and enjoyed how they weren't scared to go full sci-fi horror mode there for a bit. Once again the fact we know all the stunts are done by Cruise just adds to the submersible aspect. Recommended!
