VHS back in 70's and 80's was mostly rental only by consumers which led to a lot of video rental stores appear in most towns it was not really until 1987 that started to see consumers purchasing home media VHS films instead of renting and more so from 1989 onwards when the film studios became aware the market potential for releasing films on home media as before this it was mostly rental.
Prices from 1990 started to be around £15 - £25 and later to be £5.99 - £15 before DVD arrived on the market
1989-1990 and later years saw a huge increase of sales of VHS home media and new and back catalog titles getting a release.
DVD prices in 1997 was £30-£35 but quickly took off and after 2 years prices started to drop to decent prices £15-£20 and some as low as £8.99
4K UHD disc prices have not dropped as quickly in comparison to DVD or Blu-ray prices over a same 2 year period
Film distributors if they want high unit disc sales need to start having UHD disc prices of around £15- £20 and not £29.99

Prices was that high I was a buyer in the business 1990-2001 and was directly involved in getting the prices lowered
Disney DVD prices in 1997 was £30 - £35
Other distributors prices was £25-£30 in 1997
Prices started to change from 1998-1999 when I approached the distributors Columbia and Warner to do deals with 2 for £30 and from this resulted in Warner having back catalog titles priced at £15.00 each in 2000 with new releases priced at £20-£25 and the other distributors followed this pricing in 2000

I was the buyer and later product manager with tower records from 1993-2001 that's the source it's not wrong prices
Most DVD retail prices in 1997 excluding disney was £20.00 to £25.00 with some prices been £30.00
It was not until the 2 for £30.00 deals in 1998/1999 that resulted in prices started to be £15.00 - £25.00 for DVD's in 1999/2000

UK prices was £25.00 to £30.00 and varied on the retail store involved
Disney releases as like today was more expensive than other distributors releases

I know the prices as I worked very hard in getting the distributors to drop the dealer prices so retail price lowered

I do remember DVDs being incredibly expensive when they first appeared on the market (can't recall how much exactly), although I was a student with no income, so even a pack of gum was expensive to me back then lol.

I started collecting in ‘97 and I do recall the price that Paul was stating being around that that price. I used to collect through Columbia House and they were expensive I know that’s for sure.

I have no issues with people liking 4K, I just think we're being ripped off with their prices, and don't get why people are happy to pay it - especially as they'll drop in price 2 weeks after release
Yes, we are being ripped off and NO, I'm not happy with the current pricing of 4K titles but I still buy them because I want them and I don't want to wait two weeks.
