I thought that I'd kick off a thread about this upcoming movie, directed by Guillermo del Toro.

Official Story Synopsis
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

An interesting article describing some of the battle scenes from GeekTyrant here.

Been waiting for this movie for so long really cannot wait for this so glad that they cast Charlie Day such a brilliant comedic actor not to mention Idris Elba and Charlie Hunham (Not sure how its spelled) hopefully it makes the money it deserves!!

I just saw the new trailer...this looks Awesome! Giant monsters and robots how can you go wrong? Can't wait for this movie, love GDT's work!

That looks EPIC beyond belief!

I can already tell that this'll be one of my favourite films this year, but I can't help but think that this'll (sadly) be a box office disappointment. I hope I'm wrong.

This close to release I've become very intrigued to watch this, heard the action is staged well. Does look to challenge Lone Ranger for this years biggest underperformer though so looks like treating it as a one-shot seems the best approach.

Somehow I've managed to be completely oblivious of this but I watched the trailer and :emb:mg: it looks so cool.

Can you really ever go wrong with giant robots fighting monsters? :notworthy:

Guillermo del Toro makes fantastic movies. Hellboy 1 & 2, Pan's Labyrinth... these movies had fantastic acting, excellent costume and set designs, and a lot of charm and heart. I think if anyone can pull off a giant robot/monster movie and keep it from being overly cheesey, he can do it. He is a wizard behind the camera.

Pacific Rim will be a big success.

This one has the potential to be huge (excuse the pun). I just hope that they got it right. I am a fan of monster movies and GDT as well so I will have my fingers crossed it has the depth it needs to be a solid popcorn flick.
