One of my pet hates is TV's shows being made into films and 99.9% of them are dire. Callan is one of those rare exceptions. Not only a superb adaption of a TV show but a cinema classic in its own right. Long before Edward Woodward did the piece of crap (in my opinion ) The Equalizer he did a British TV show about a Government Agent Called Callan, a killer with a conscience. This film is an adaption of the original 1967 Pilot. Callan is working an ordinary 9 to 5 job and is pressed back into service by his boss Hunter to do a kill. But things don't go according to plan. A superb cast with Russell Hunter reprising his role as Lonely, this is an excellent film with taut script and also action. As a footnote this was the very 1st film ever to use the dolby digital system for a motion picture soundtrack.

Watch out for

The scene in which Callan kills Darth Vader. Brutal and unexpected.

Red Sparrow (2018)- I wasn’t a big fan of this. The plot was too convoluted and the accents were awful. I can’t stand it when everyone puts on accents and it sounds nothing like. Jennifer Lawrence was ok but nothing special.

Man, I don't give 4.5* and 5* ratings often but this has been a great couple of weeks.
Tomorrow I'm finally going to see the Korean film Burning in the cinema.
I heard it is a masterpiece, so hopefully I can add another high score to the list by the end of it!

Someone's been busy! A lot there I still need to check out.
I'm participating in a horror marathon this October so I'm trying to jam a lot of horror movies in my schedule.
Maybe not the smartest thing to do considering I still need to finish writing my dissertation, but hey it's a lot of fun. :D

If you (or anyone else on this forum for that matter) are into stylish movies that play out more like music videos instead of focusing mainly on plot I'd definitely recommend The Limit of Sleeping Beauty.
Unfortunately it doesn't have a great rating on IMDb and only 49 votes, but I had a blast with it!

Great piece of cinema. The build-up of this movie requires some patience. It is slow and methodically paced, but at the same time it managed to engage me for its 2.5 hour runtime. Mainly achieved through the captivating cinematography and brooding score.
Director Chang-dong Lee appears to be more occupied with establishing a certain mood and playing around with an abundance of interesting themes instead of the plot, which remains shrouded in ambiguity. At the same time, Burning offers a compelling character study into the minds of three vastly different characters portrayed brilliantly by Ah-in Yoo, Jong-seo Jeon and Steven Yeun (who I coincidentally also saw in Sorry to Bother You yesterday). There is one scene in this movie in which a half-naked Jong-seo Jeon dances in the sunset, which was so breathtaking it might honestly be one of my favourite scenes ever in film. I beg you Plain Archive use it for a premium edition of this movie. Go see it when you have the chance!

Cool horror-thriller from The Raid director Gareth Evans, which takes place in a setting that I love. A Victorian-era religious cult? Sign me up! The movie aims to establish a consistent dreadful atmosphere instead of going the jump-scare route, which I can only applaud. I was impressed by some of the haunting imagery and the costumes. However, I still felt like it was too flashy at times and lacking authenticity. I had hoped for something a bit grimier. I also ended up being a bit disappointed by the fact that the filmmakers did not have the courage to be as unforgiving as the film initially presented itself to be.

I'm sorry Giallo-fans! I'll never be a fan but I thought Suspiria and Phenomena were quite a bit better than this Argento film. The cinematography is always on point in his films, but I really disliked the music, the dubbing, the uninteresting characters and the pulpy nature of it all.

To end on a positive note, I raise Burning's score to 4.5/5*. It has really grown on me after sitting with it for a while and I can't stop thinking about it.

I love Deep Red, probably my favourite Argento film. I loved the music but each to their own! I admit the dubbing is poor though as it is with most Giallo films.
