Tend to agree - as much as I like the Coens, I have to call them out on a decidedly mixed bag. Most of these stories can be described in two sentences - with last sentence being - "....and then they/he/she died." First one (Buster) was funny, secong was a just a shaggy dog joke (Algodones), third was just boring, uncomfortable and sad (Meal Ticket), fourth was interesting but wholly unbelievable in its denoument (Gold Canyon), girl who got Rattled was involving but again, a shaggy dog ending, and Mortal Remains was obviously the worst with so-so dialog and a predictable ending telegraphed from miles away.
The cinematography is fantastic. The throughline is obviously death. But it hangs together pretty weakly, and the sum and the parts have issues. I admit to being bored quite a few times, and after a few endings saying "What the hell was the point of even telling that story?"
And more than once I thought "The director of GRIM PRAIRIE TALES (1990) is either honored, or pissed that the Coen Brothers nicked his movie all these years later."

I haven’t heard of that one, I will have to check it out! Supposedly these stories were wrote up to 25 years ago by the Coens. The last one is the only one that they said to have wrote specifically for this movie.
I have to agree, there is an awful lot of death in there. It seems like everybody gets it whether you are good or evil which is pretty consistent with their earlier work. After thinking about it I think I would go up to 3 and a half stars, as you said the cinematography was spectacular and it’s nice to see something a little different. I do think they could have added a little something more though, maybe if they had some kind of link between the stories it might have worked better.

Cinematography aside - it is definitely lesser Coen. Which is a shame - because the first episode (Buster Scruggs) made me think they were totally back to doing some early Coen humor (like Raising Arizona and Hudsucker Proxy).
Btw- Hudsucker Proxy is a Christmas staple in my world!

Not enough stars...masterpiece in everway. And beyond gorgeous to look at. Del Toro’s best since Pans Labyrinth.

I fully expected this to be a 1-star kinda flick, but it was actually worth a whole other star! The amount of gore and strong language surprised me. Hell, I even laughed at some of the humour... but then I also laughed at how bad the CGI was in places. And what was with the friendly Pred-dog that served absolutely nothing to the plot what-so-ever? :BS:

I imagined Schwarzenegger was going to pop out the tomb at the end, which I thought would've been the most ridiculous thing ever... until I saw what was actually in there.

Sleepaway Camp 2 (1988)- Decent film, the usual kids getting killed camping story. Some inventive death scenes though considering the low budget.

With a run time of 215 mins - only to be watched after seeing another inferior cut and appreciate a few more references missed on previous viewings throughout the movie...

Zack’s best IMO. Extended cut is excellent.
