reprints have been around for many different things like comics, records, posters now steelbooks ..take comics for example, if DC or Marvel do a reprint of a first issue, does it make the original one less valuable? no... but it allows people to read a comic they otherwise probably would never have the chance to. I have quite a few records, Id love to have a first print copy of some iconic records such as Dark side of the moon or Sgt Pepper, I can buy them on vinyl now but they will be a recently pressed version, to me its not the same as owning an original copy but again its probably the closest I'll ever get. I spent a lot of time and money tracking down hard to find dance records in the 90's some of those rare records were bootlegged but Im proud to own the originals, anyone can get hold of a bootleg, but it takes effort (and sometimes a lot of money) to track down the original...
Posters and art are a similar thing, Im sure most of us will own a few movie posters, chances are most of them are reprints unless your lucky enough to find an original cinema poster for a decent price, does this devalue the original? no...same with a Picasso, Warhol or Banksy print can you afford a few million for an original? get a print for a few hundred, its still not the original but its still nice and still collectable..
So steelbooks, a limited quantity collectable version of a film, is it annoying when they get reprinted? maybe... but a reprint is still not the original, maybe reprints should be slightly different? For example the recent best buy steels sans inside artwork, or the German steels where the original print run had removable ratings stickers but whos second print run had printed ratings...no confusion which is the original version, maybe re release the fabled futureshop Iron man minus inside artwork and without embossing, its similar but different, would you be happy if the first print run was the 'premium' version with embossing, inner art etc but then a later second run was more basic without embossing, no inner art etc, this allows more folks to own a version but still keeps the 2 versions apart, maybe similar to records have a code number printed on the rear that identifies it as the second print run...make the first run a 2 disk and the second run a single disk...theres lots of ways of re releasing something that is very similar but not 100% the same...
Taking the latest hot topic of the Futureshop Iron man Vs the Play.com one and what will happen to its value, I dont think the Play.com one will have any effect on the price of the Futureshop one, it will always be the original and will always be collectable, BUT I think the Play.com one will become a sought after release in its own right, even if it is a 'second best' option for those of us who cant afford or dont see the attraction of spending so much money on what is at the end of the day a Blu ray in a tin box!
