The sequel to 2004's Red Dead Revolver, Rockstar's take on spaghetti westerns, is coming to the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 this fall, Rockstar Games announced this morning.

Red Dead Redemption is the story of former outlaw John Marston and will take place at the turn of the 20th century when the "lawless and chaotic badlands began to give way to the expanding reach of government and the spread of the Industrial Age."

"Along the way, players will experience the heat of gunfights and battles, meet a host of unique characters, struggle against the harshness of one of the world’s last remaining wildernesses, and ultimately pick their own precarious path through an epic story about the death of the Wild West and the gunslingers that inhabited it."

“The team at San Diego have massively exceeded our expectations with the sheer depth of experiences in Red Dead Redemption,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. “The seamless combination of breathtaking beauty and intense action, all woven together with strong plotlines in a massive vibrant, rural environment is mind-blowing. We think this game helps to push the limits of what an open-world gaming experience can be.”

The game will use Rockstar's proprietary RAGE game engine, which was used in Table Tennis, Grand Theft Auto IV and Midnight Club: Los Angles.

The game will feature an open-world environment which will include frontier towns, wildlife-packed prairies and mountain passes.

I loved Red Dead Revolver, despite the average reviews and 1.5 million copies sold, and it's great to see that the sequel is finally moving forward. Now about that Gun sequel.

Firing from cover was a staple of Red Dead Revolver, so we can expect to see plenty more of it, and of situations requiring it

Bad News :(

As part of its latest financial results report today, Take-Two delayed Red Dead Redemption by several weeks. Previously scheduled to arrive on April 27, the game is now slated to release in North America on May 18 and internationally on May 21. The announcement doesn't specify a reason for the move, though it's worth pointing out that the new date moves Red Dead Redemption out of the publisher's fiscal Q2 (February–April) and into its third quarter (beginning May 1). Update: During an investor call corresponding with the financial report, Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick clarified that the delay was issued to extend the game's pre-release marketing period.

Take-Two also notes that financial guidance for its fiscal 2010 has been adjusted to take the date change into account. While Read Dead Redemption was at the center of a controversy concerning developer Rockstar San Diego, a barrage of recent media assets and confirmation of retail pre-order bonuses seems to indicate that development is on track.

the video game world in no longer an art,it pretty much just revolves around greed now

Did anybody else pre order from BB yet? I did, but I didn't get a case or nothing like usual. Just got the receipt for pre order. So I'm wondering if the code will be in the actual game...

Rockstar has released the box art for its upcoming Western sand box game, Red Dead Redemption (added to OP). The art shows the game's main character, John Marston, hoisting a double-barrel.

The game takes place in the wild west of America. Look for the game on both PlayStation 3 on May 18.

This game is lookin good, I like the screens, hopefully it is a user friendly game in the sense of direction (since open world) ... if so, I'm happy.

yeah, I'm hoping it's good too. I liked the style of Damnation, but the game was horrid. This seems like it might be in the same style, so I hope the game is better.

Rockstar: Red Dead Redemption is "our most ambitious game to date"

Rockstar has described the company’s forthcoming Wild West romp Red Dead Redemption as its “most ambitious game to date.”

Speaking to the chaps at MCV, general manager for Rockstar UK Neil Stephen wasted no time in extolling the game’s jaw-dropping scale and visual appeal, and reckons the sequel is in for a chance as contender for Game of the Year.

“Red Dead Redemption is our most ambitious game to date and our biggest release this year,” he said. “The game has garnered an incredibly positive reception from the gaming and lifestyle press with many outlets placing Red Dead Redemption as a possible game of the year contender.

“This title is incredibly beautiful and on an unprecedented scale, it is populated with a staggering number of dynamic, contextual activities that you can take part in any time you wish along with a complex ecological system of animal life."

“This, combined with our most ambitious multiplayer offering to date, leaves us with very high expectations for what we think is our next blockbuster gaming franchise.”

Red Dead Redemption is due out on PS3 and Xbox 360 in North America on May 18, with a UK release following on May 21.

really though, can't wait for this game. That opening match standoff looks like it could give us a few cheap laughs.

Pre-ordered last night when it was at $56. Saw today that the bonus got bumped up to $20 so I was really happy to see that. Depending on when that gift card expires and there's no new game that I want I think I'm going to put it towards infamous. Never played it but I've heard nothing but good things about it. And after the discount it'll be about $6, now that's a deal. Might also pick up Fallout 3 at the same time. Heading back to experience some highly acclaimed games that I missed out on.
