Resistance 2 Megathread

Jan 29, 2009
Resistance 2 is a sci-fi first person shooter video game developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 3. The game was released in North America on November 4, 2008, Japan on November 13, 2008, and in Europe on November 28, 2008. Resistance 2 is the sequel to the best-selling PlayStation 3 launch title Resistance: Fall of Man. Resistance 2 sees protagonist Nathan Hale travel to the United States in order to once again battle the Chimera, who have launched a full scale invasion of both the east and west coasts. This time out Hale is part of a special task force of soldiers called "The Sentinels", who, like him, are infected with the Chimeran virus, but keep it under control with drugs and are thus able to reap the benefits. As of January 24, 2009 Resistance 2 has sold approximately 1.36 million copies worldwide according to Vgchartz.

Resistance 2 is a single-player campaign, with the player controlling protagonist Nathan Hale. The game includes many of the weapons from Resistance: Fall of Man, as well as new weapons such as the "Marksman" and a mini gun called the "HVAP(High Velocity Armor Piercing) Wraith". The weapons are a mix of 1950s human technology and more advanced alien technology. Unlike the first game, where the player was able to carry as many weapons as they could get their hands on, Resistance 2 limited the player to two weapons, as well as a more limited number of grenades. Resistance 2 also does not use a health bar in the single player campaign, but instead uses an automatic regenerative health system, whereby players must keep out of the line of fire in order to recover health, much like Call of Duty 4.

[edit] Multiplayer

Resistance 2 features multiplayer in two variations: cooperative and competitive. Both multiplayer modes track the player's performance, gaining experience and leading to benefits and rewards, as well as assigning the player a skill ranking.

Unlike its predecessor, Resistance 2 does not offer co-op for the single player campaign. Cooperative mode features a separate campaign mode which runs parallel to the single-player campaign. The cooperative campaign supports anything from two to eight players, taking the role of a special forces group called "Specter Team". Players are tasked with many randomized objectives around the map, while defeating hordes of Chimera in the process. The strength of the enemy forces is altered based on the number of players and their skill levels. There are three classes to choose from: Special Ops - long-distance damage dealers, who also provide ammunition; Soldiers - the "tanks" who endure the most damage; and Medics - who drain life from enemies and impart to teammates.

Competitive mode features support for up to 60 players at any given time; the highest number of players for any PlayStation 3 online game as of Resistance 2's release. Four games modes are available: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag (Core Control) and Skirmish, while involved players getting split up into squads of five and take part in objective-based proxy-battles. Players can play as either the Humans or the Chimerans, and get to choose their weapon loadout when before and during a game while respawning. Maps have varying sizes and layouts for the different game modes and number of players.

For the many people that experienced Resistance 2, you know that it wasn’t the end! For one, It left to many questions unanswered; second, there is the never ending dispute of what really happened to Nathan Hale; and three, its Insomniac, they always have something up there sleeves.

To re-cap, (again spoilers) Nathan Hale has been shot in the head, presumed dead. Insomniac hasn’t released word on whether or not that one bullet killed Hale, and fans very on both sides disputing he is dead, while others say no! I would have to agree that he isn’t dead. My reasons being, because Hale never died with one bullet throughout the game, and even if the scene showed a hole through his head, his powers increased after absorbing Daedalus, meaning that most likely it didn’t kill him! For the plot, I would guess, knowing Insomniac, they want to rap the story up by possibly having Hale wake up, and he is confused about whats right and whats wrong. This would inevitably cause him to join the Chimeran ranks; this would be good because it would most definably answer the questions of who are the pure blooded Chimera and what they are doing on Earth, I wouldn’t be surprised if They introduced a new Alien life form, which would answer this question as well; the Chimera have returned to earth to retrieve their weapons and their equipment, but upon arriving on Earth, they realized it was inhabited by creatures in the eyes of the Chimera (humans). They seized this opportunity to capture and utilize their prey against the other Alien life force! Now it has become a three way war! or maybe a team of Earth and this new Alien life force will be created to defeat the Chimera. Although no official word from Insomniac has been mentioned, this would seem right on the spot. Other possible plots include Capelli fighting on the humans side fighting against Hale.

What I would like to see in R3 would be many things, although I loved R1 and R2, I want to see more time put into R3. Resistance 2 had good graphics, but could have improved, if only Insomniac spend more than one year on there games; this however would mean you wouldn’t see any other titles from them until its release i.e. Ratchet & Clank Future 2. Also, don’t be ashamed to borrow the Killzone 2 engine. It would be nice to see R3 with as good or even better graphics than Killzone 2. They should spend more time on the audio, the shots fired by weapons were surprisingly low on R2 even when near a gunfight, R1 had the right idea; I used to love standing next to snipers just to here them go off wit me surround sound, now unfortunately, it isn’t as good anymore! I would also like to see the return of the L11-2 Dragon, the Splitter, the Arc-Charger, and the Reapers (given they take out the auto aim), and all other weapons from R2 excluding the Pulse Cannon. Also, as good as the new online dashboard looks, its missing one thing I loved from R1, you could send messages to people through inside the game, and you had a separate friends list for in-game! All this put into perspective, and R3 will be a major success.

What would the fans of Resistance like to see in the third installment?

Resistance 3: Modern Warfare????

Resistance 2 is one of my favorite games of 2008 with its stellar online multiplayer mode. The game was highly anticipated and went on to sell over a million copies. There is a new rumor doing the rounds that Resistance 3 may follow in the footsteps of Call of Duty and do a re-imaging of the game to a more modern warfare setting.

It is often difficult to find sales data regarding the privately owned Insomniac Games. The studio has been rated as one of the top 10 Best Small Companies to work for in America for 3 years in a row and has several proven franchises such as Ratchet & Clank, Spyro and Resistance.

The estimated shipment amount for Resistance 2, based on previous life-time sales, is around 3 million units shipped worldwide. However, without solid figures it is probably safe to say the sell through amount to-date lies somewhere between 1.5 and 2 million units.

The game went on to sell over a million copies but did not sell as well as other shooters such as Gears of War 2. The game was also rated highly by many of the veteran game critics such as: IGN (9.5), GameSpot (9.0), X-Play (5/5), and GameTrailers (9.1). However, despite being an excellent game some have started to question if Resistance is loosing its appeal?

There is word that some of the ideas that have been thrown around regarding the next installment of Resistance involve shifting the timeline to the present or near future. Instead of continuing the game in the alternate World War II timeframe, the game would move forward to modern times to blend weapons of today with the alien invasion.

Call of Duty is one notable series that came to the FPS forefront with its shift to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. There is a strong indication that gamers have started to tire the World War II era and theme altogether. The big question on my mind is will we finally get to have an all out war with the pre-generative species to the Chimera virus?

It is difficult to say when Insomniac Games will announce plans for the next installment to the series as the company remains mostly elusive. Although, Insomniac fans can be almost 90% sure that a new Ratchet & Clank game will be released by the end of this year to hold you over till the next Resistance installment.

I just hope they still have Hale as the main character. They do need to make the gameplay more like the first one. I agree with you on the audio. It does sound a lot quieter than the 1st one. They need to make it longer on the campaign. This was way too short. It seemed like they focused too much on surroundings and making the levels huge in aspect, but the gameplay fell short.

Now 6 months on and with hindsight available, it's a good time see exactly how Resistance 2 has performed. Being the sequel to the Playstation 3 launch title, Resistance: Fall of Man, expectations were exceedingly high and after seeing Resistance: Fall of Man perform exceedingly well in sales and receive praise from critics and it was envisaged that Insomniac would push on with the series. The game came out in November 2008 worldwide, so let's dig in to the analysis.

The first point of contention is with reviews. Resistance 2 received very mixed reviews when it came out, but they were mostly favourable. Many felt that while the single player experience had a lot of scale, it was still lacking. However, its saving grace was the copious amount of multiplayer options. You could now enjoy a separate story with up to eight friends online in the co-operative mode. Each mission came with a briefing and objectives that had to be battled as a team and upon completion, intel would be unlocked which shed more light on to the overall Resistance story. In combination with the competitive modes (which allowed for up to 60 players), Resistance 2 was an online package that gave a lot back to the consumer.

In terms of sales, Resistance 2 probably hasn't done as well as people expected, but they had very high expectations, especially off the back of Gears of War 2's massive success around the same time. However, while Resistance 2 didn't post massive numbers near the start, it's been quietly moving units in the background, much like Resistance: Fall of Man did. While VGChartz are just an estimator of sales and not definitive, it's interesting when comparing the two titles side by side from their respective launch dates.

Resistance 2 Sales Figures

When compared side-by-side, Resistance 2's sales actually look quite impressive, especially when you appreciate that Resistance: Fall of Man was also included in a Playstation 3 bundle, which massively helped its sales. Sales have slowed down recently, but its not hard to see this title achieving sales close to the 3 million mark in its lifetime.

Bryan Intihar, Community Manager of Insomniac Games told us the developer's thoughts on Resistance 2's longevity:

"We're very happy with Resistance 2's performance at the six-month mark. The game has been a success across the globe-we've even seen some strong sales out of Japan where first-person shooters are typically not as popular. Since launch we've continually updated the game via patches to address some of the community's top requests, which included bringing back the popular Resistance: Fall of Man multiplayer mode Meltdown and adding the second player PSN login functionality. And most recently, we released downloadable content in the form of new competitive multiplayer maps and character skins-the response to both has been great.

We're also excited to see how much the Resistance franchise has grown over the last six months, thanks to the release of Resistance: Retribution for PSP (Sony Bend did a fantastic job on the game), Resistance comic books from WildStorm, Hot Topic's Resistance t-shirts, and the Resistance novel. You'll even see some action figures coming to a store near you this fall."

Looking back, it's easy to see that Resistance 2 has been a huge success for Insomniac so far and it looks like it's going to continue to grow considerably moving forwards. It wasn't all rosy for Resistance 2 though, and I'm sure the criticism about the story will be taken on board for the next instalment in the franchise which is probably going to hit our consoles at some point in 2010.

Whether you are a heroic Sentinel triggerman or a heartless Chimeran killing machine – it’s high time you log into SCEA’s PlayStation Home and join your fellow soldiers as we launch (pun intended) into the next phase of the platform’s evolution.

This Thursday, May 21st, the epic sci-fi shooter franchise Resistance comes blasting into Home with a dedicated game space featuring an awesome turret-style FPS mini-game, reward items, leaderboards and full-on game launching support.

Visit the space early in the day and use the “Four Barrels of Fury” mini-game to trigger your itchy finger. You will be awarded special virtual goods as you further hone your Chimeran ship blasting skills and a nearby global leaderboard will capture and display the highest scores. Then take advantage of your war-torn surroundings and meet up with fellow Resistance fans, old and new, and launch into either co-op or competitive multiplayer matches of the critically-acclaimed apocalyptic shooter, Resistance 2, developed by Insomniac Games.

On launch day, your favorite Community Managers (ahem!) will be on-site to battle with you, and the folks from Insomniac will be dropping in over time to do the same (like next Thursday, from 5:00-6:00pm PT). Best of all, we’ll be designating every Friday night from 6:00pm – 12:00am “Resistance 2: SRPA Siege” nights. We’re inviting you all to show up and contribute to the carnage, whether you are currently fighting the virus or happily succumbing to it.

See you in Home!

Dr. Malikov and The Grims didn’t just have a part in Resistance 2’s campaign—you could also assume the role of these characters on the game’s competitive multiplayer battlefields. Well, that’s if you pre-ordered R2 at select U.S. retailers and received one of the bonus multiplayer skins.

Over the last few months we’ve received a number of e-mails from Resistance fans here and around the globe requesting these exclusive skins. So starting today both will be available for download through the PlayStation Store in all territories for free!
