George A. Romero, the legendary director of horror classics such as Night of the Living Dead and Day of the Dead, has died at 77 after a brief, but aggressive battle with lung cancer, his family confirmed in a statement shared by his manager Sunday.

The famous zombie film creator passed away peacefully in his sleep, with his wife Suzanne Desrocher Romero and daughter Tina Romero by his side, as the score of his favorite film, The Quiet Man, played.

“He leaves behind a loving family, many friends, and a filmmaking legacy that has endured, and will continue to endure, the test of time,” said his family in a statement.

This news saddens me. A master, a legend and one the most influential person of the horror genre. R.I.P. and thank you for all the greatness you contributed to the film industry.

Had the pleasure of meeting this iconic horror legend twice. One for the Land of the Dead UK release (with Greg Nicotero) and again to promote the UK DVD of Creepshow. Both times he was a down to earth gentleman who had time for all his fans and answered any questions they had. A sad day for movie fans everywhere
