Rock Band Unplugged - Megathread

Publisher support for the PSP system will continue throughout the year with Rock Band Unplugged™, launching exclusively on PSP. MTV Games and Harmonix announced separately that gamers will be able to take Rock Band Unplugged on the road with the first ever portable version of the popular music and gaming experience. Rock Band Unplugged will take center stage as it leverages the PSP system’s Wi-Fi capabilities and becomes the first PSP game to include a fully-featured in-game store for downloadable content in the North American and Europeans markets.

The gameplay is largely the same as that of Rock Band and Rock Band 2; players must hit corresponding buttons in-time as they scroll by on-screen. There will not be a peripheral attachment available, like that which Activision produced for Guitar Hero: On Tour for the Nintendo DS. Instead, all input is handled by the ‘Left,’ ‘Up,’ ‘Triangle,’ and ‘Circle’ buttons. The player can switch between guitar, drums, bass, and “vocals” (although he won’t physically be singing, merely tapping buttons) using the L and R shoulder buttons.

Tracks are broken down into what are called “phrases.” Play a phrase perfectly to earn a multiplier boost and a prompt to switch to a different instrument. The player can actually choose to switch instruments at anytime, but switching prematurely will cause him to lose his multiplier. “Overdrive,” used to rack up big points and avoid failing a track, is of course included as always.

The game will ship with tracks from Blink 182, Boston, AFI, Kansas, Lit, and The Police. DLC tracks will be made available through the PlayStation Network and can be accessed through the game’s own built-in store. Multiplayer functionality will not be available. Visually, the style and feel of Rock Band is maintained perfectly, with only a drop-off in the polygon count.

Look for an official announcement soon. Based on its current development progress, we surmise the game should ship to retail by year’s end.

How will Harmonix squeeze the full band experience of Rock Band onto the instrument-free PSP? By making Rock Band Unplugged a spiritual sequel to Amplitude, Harmonix's critically beloved pre-Guitar Hero rhythm game.

First details on the recently announced Rock Band Unplugged from Primotech describe the peripheral-free game as a beat-matching rhythm title that uses the PSP's directional pad and buttons to play along with guitar, bass, drum and vocal tracks.

Like Amplitude and its predecessor Frequency, Rock Band Unplugged tracks will be broken down into "phrases" which the player must beat-match perfectly to score multipliers.

Guess Harmonix and company found a way around Sony's decision to deny us an Amplitude sequel, eh?

Primotech adds that, unlike Amplitude, there will be no online multiplayer mode. Shame about that. Perhaps Harmonix can work it into a future proper PlayStation 3 sequel?

Rock Band Unplugged, the Harmonix co-developed PSP take on Rock Band, is coming to PSPs this summer. It's trading pricey plastic peripherals for free ones: your hands.

The first portable console Rock Band, Rock Band Unplugged tracks will be broken down into "phrases" which the player must beat-match perfectly to score multipliers and use the PSP's directional pad and buttons to play along with guitar, bass, drum and vocal tracks.

RB Unplugged features 40 master recording, including nine brand new tracks for the PSP version:

3 Doors Down - "Kryptonite"
AFI - "Miss Murder"
Alice in Chains - "Would?"
Audioslave - "Gasoline"
Black Tide - "Show Me the Way"
Blink 182 - "What's My Age Again"
Freezepop - "Less Talk More Rokk"
Jackson 5 - "ABC"
Tenacious D - "Rock Your Socks"

These tracks will eventually make their way to other platforms. Rock Bank Unplugged launches on June 9 in both North America and Europe. It will be priced at US$39.99 for North America. There's also a limited edition PSP bundle complete with Rock Band Unplugged branded PSP, the game, a voucher to download Paramount Pictures' School of Rock from the PlayStation Store and a 4GB Memory Stick PRO Duo. All yours for $199.99.

There have been a few attempts at interactions between PlayStation 3 and PSP, but it's hardly an industry trend. Could that change with Rock Band Unplugged, Harmonix and MTV Games' portable take on their band game?

Nope.

Despite some ideas we had about the PS3 version of Rock Band or Rock Band 2 sharing sharing downloadable content or unlocking features for Rock Band Unplugged on PSP, Harmonix told 1UP at a demo last week that's not the case and there's no interaction between the two platforms.

Maybe that could change with future iterations, though. Do you have any ideas for Harmonix?
