Jack Tretton, CEO and president of Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA), has conceded that the PlayStation 3 may experience hardware shortages at retail following increased sales momentum on the back of the new Slim model and price cut.

Speaking with Reuters, Tretton described hardware shortages for the high-end gaming platform as ‘conceivable,’ though remained highly optimistic of the machine’s future success.

"If things continue at this pace, it is conceivable that there will be product shortages," said the executive. “In a very difficult economy, I couldn't be more optimistic about our fortunes for the rest of the year and for the future," he added.

PS3 sales in North America increased by a whopping 300 percent following the introduction of a price cut last month, which saw the machine drop to $299 USD. A revised Slim model hit store shelves in early September.

I honestly don't see a major 'shortage' when they aren't releasing any major franchise games around Christmas.... everything has been pushed back to next year, and that certainly doesn't make any units fly off the shelf....
