Yesterday it was reported that Justin Timberlake was in contention to play The Green Lantern. JT had shot a screen test for the film, as had the other three contenders Bradley Cooper, Jared Leto, and Ryan Reynolds. But at the end of the day on Friday, Reynolds was chosen over the other finalists to play the role of Hal Jordan aka The Green Lantern.

The Hollywood Reporter adds that the deal isn’t yet finalized, but Reynolds in the final choice (they just need to agree on money and specifics). The studio “had holding options on the three actors, but, except for Reynolds, those expired Monday. Reynolds’ option would have expired end of day Friday.” Producer Donald De Line, director Martin Campbell and the studio each had different favorites which made it difficult to agree on any one choice.

The film’s budget isn’t finalized but Warner Bros is hoping to begin shooting in January, hoping to have the films in theaters for the previously announced June 17th 2011 release date. Last we heard, Warners was planning to shoot the film at Fox Studios Australia in Sydney (to take advantage of tax rebates), with a budget of around $150 million.

Casino Royale director Martin Campbell is set to helm the project based on a screenplay by Greg Berlanti (Everwood, Eli Stone), Marc Guggenheim (Law & Order, Eli Stone) and Michael Green (Smallville, Heroes). The Green Lantern character was created by writer Bill Finger and artist Martin Nodell in All-American Comics #16, published in July 1940. The Green Lantern possesses a power ring that gives him control over the physical world as long as the wielder has sufficient willpower and strength to wield it.

What do you think of the choice of Ryan Reynolds? He certainly looks the part and has the right physique for the role. He’s very likable and charismatic actor who has been stuck in a bunch of bad films, but I definitely like the choice — especially over Justin Timberlake. But I’m wondering how this may effect Marvel/Fox’s preliminary plans to have him play Deadpool in a stand-alone film.

ryan as green lantern really he is better at comedy like roles but i guess he can do it. and isn't green lanturn black? atleast he was on justice leaugue.

There has been both white and black Green Lanterns ... in any case, id rather see Ryan than JT ... I think Ryan would make a good one ... I seen him in some serious roles before.

Test Shooting Has Begun for Green Lantern

NOLA.com is reporting that Warner Bros. Pictures has started test shooting for director Martin Campbell's Green Lantern today in Madisonville, which is on the other side of Lake Pontchartrain compared to New Orleans:

A section of Lake Road in Madisonville will be closed intermittently on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon, as a film crew prepares to shoot scenes for a movie.

Although filming for "Green Lantern" has not yet begun, crews from Warner Brothers will be on location to run tests with a stunt car, according to Bill Doyle, supervising location manager.

The closure will be in the vicinity of the high bridge on Lake Road between Louisiana 22 and Lake Pontchartrain, according to news release from the state highway department.

Coming to theaters on June 17, 2011, Green Lantern stars Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Tim Robbins and Mark Strong.

Green Lantern’s Suit Will Be CG

Everyone is curious to see what Ryan Reynolds will look like in costume in the big screen adaptation of DC Comics’ Green Lantern. Production started earlier this month in New Orleans, and while the first set photos have begun to hit the web — don’t expect to see Reynolds in the green suit. Not today, not next week, not next month, not ever. So don’t expect to see any leaked shots of Reynolds in the actual suit until Warner Bros makes the official full reveal.

Why not?

Well, because there isn’t a suit.

No suit?

That’s right. No suit. When I was first told this info, I didn’t believe it. I actually didn’t even consider it as a real possibility. But the information I’m about to reveal has since been backed up by two other independent sources. I stand by this information 150% — this is legit. I risk my reputation on it. Ready for it? Okay…

The suit that Ryan wears on set is a grey tracking motion/performance capture suit with led lights. I’ve heard that Ryan Reynolds has been joking on set that Warner Bros is going to make him into a Na’vi when the final cut is released. His joke, not mine. The Green Lantern suit you will see in the final film will be almost entirely created using computers.

That’s right — Green Lantern’s suit will be mostly CG!

Wait, stop…

I said STOP. Comic book fanatics should not freak out just yet…

My source within Warner Bros assures me that the suit will look cool. Don’t let the words “Computer generated” scare you.

I must first remind you that Ngila Dickson, the costumer designer on the film has won an Academy Award for a little film called The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Maybe you’ve seen it before? Don’t let her Xena: Warrior Princess roots scare you, she worked on the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Last Samurai (another film which earned her an Oscar nomination), The Illusionist, Blood Diamond and The International. She has an impressive IMDB page, for sure.

Ngila was tasked with trying to find a way to do something that stands apart from all of the other superheroes spandex suit designs we’ve seen in the past. Honestly, isn’t the look becoming overused?

Remember, the Green Lantern suit is something that should look alien — it needs to seem other worldly. It encompasses any creature that wears the ring, and Hal Jordan is the first human to ever wear the suit. This was a chance for Dickson to do something different. You also have to consider that Hal changes into the suit multiple times in mid scene, and the cg also allows him to do this.

I’ve heard that when the cg is complete, the suit will look like a manifestation of his power. And while I couldn’t confirm this, I’ve heard that DC’s Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns has seen the designs and given them his blessing.

The suit is lined with white LEDs, which I initially thought might be used to give a practical glow (kind of like how Billy Crudup wore blue LEDs to give the actors around Dr. Manhattan a blue glow in Watchmen), but I’ve since been told might just be for mo-cap tracking purposes.

Here is some other information I’ve learned about the production:

* That leaked set photo of the silver ship is indeed Abin Sur’s crashed spaceship

* Temura Morrison looks legit as Abin Sur, although his head isn’t as elongated as in the concept art photos leaked awhile back.

* Peter Sarsgaard’s makeup tests with the enlarged head look cool. He has wild hair, kind of like Jason Lee in “My Name is Earl” and, of course, the kind of traditional Hector Hammond stache.

* I’m told that Reynolds is awesome in the role. He’s knocking it out of the park so far.

* The screenplay that leaked online is a very old draft. I’ve been told that the villains have changed a bit and that the rewritten script is supposedly way better in the end.

This is going to end up bad! :hilarious:

Warner Bros. and DC Comics are so confident that Ryan Reynolds wrapped in green will bring in tons of green that they have already given the go ahead to start planning a sequel.

Green Lantern won't hit the big screen until July 2011, yet Warner is asking the team to come up with a treatment for a second film.

That looks too fake, they should of opted for a real life costume and maybe touch it up with some CGI. All CGI will look weird, as it is you can notice it right away on that picture.

WB Hires Green Lantern 1 writer to pen the sequel

With the first Green Lantern just barely wrapped and the finished film not even close to being in the can, Warner Bros. has already hired a screenwriter for the sequel. Micheal Goldenberg, who worked on Contact, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and the first Green Lantern, got the job.

During Comic Con, Green Lantern comics writer Geoff Johns said that he thought of the first film as the opening chapter in a trilogy, and rumors have already started to fly that second and third films are firmly planned, possibly even to be shot back-to-back, with production beginning before the first film is released.

Setting aside all that as rumor for now, hiring a writer to pen the sequel suggests that WB wants to be ready to pull the trigger on the sequel as soon as possible, should that seem like a good idea. The studio has to work with the schedule of rising star Ryan Reynolds, which includes competing for his time with Fox, which has Reynolds lined up for Deadpool. But there’s a long time to go before we know how well the first film does; Green Lantern opens on June 17, 2011.

They haven't even released it for theaters and they are already planning a second one.
