From Variety:

Netflix has acquired worldwide rights to Martin Scorsese’s gangster movie “The Irishman,” starring Robert De Niro.

Netflix would not comment on the deal but sources close to the project confirmed a report by IndieWire.

“The Irishman” will be the ninth collaboration between Scorsese and De Niro. Steven Zaillian has written the script, based on the Charles Brandt’s 2004 book, “I Heard You Paint Houses,” which centered on the life of the mob hitman Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran.

Scorsese and De Niro first partnered on 1973’s “Mean Streets,” followed by “Taxi Driver,” “New York, New York,” “Raging Bull,” “The King of Comedy,” “Goodfellas,” “Cape Fear” and 1995’s “Casino.”

Production on “The Irishman” is expected to start later this year.

The project originated in 2008 at Paramount with De Niro’s Tribeca Productions and De Niro’s producing partner Jane Rosenthal along with Scorsese’s Sikelia Productions.

The book title “I Heard You Paint Houses” comes from criminal slang for contract killings and the blood splatter on walls. Brandt befriended Sheeran shortly before Sheeran died in 2003 and he confessed the author that he had been involved with the killing of Jimmy Hoffa, carried out on orders from mob boss Russell Bufalino. Hoffa disappeared in 1975 and was never found.

“The Irishman” would mark Scorsese’s follow-up to “Silence,” a major disappointment for Paramount since opening wide on Jan. 20. The $46 million-budgeted historical drama has earned just $7 million domestically and may have contributed to Brad Grey’s exit as CEO of the studio last week.

STX spent roughly $50 million for international rights to “The Irishman” at last year’s Cannes Film Festival with Paramount still on board at that point to distribute the title in North America.

STX and Paramount were not immediately available for comment Tuesday.

From Collider:

A couple days ago, we learned that Martin Scorsese’s next film, The Irishman, had been picked up for distribution by Netflix. The film is based on the true story of Frank Sheeran, a Teamsters official with ties to the Bufalino crime family who confessed to the murder of Jimmy Hoffa before his death in 2003. Schindler’s Listscribe and The Night Of creator Steven Zaillian penned the script, and the film has been percolating for a few years now as Scorsese intends to use CG technology to de-age De Niro and cover large swaths of Sheeran’s life. Netflix paid $100 million for the project, and now Variety reports that the budget is ballooning to $125 to do the necessary VFX work to digitally de-age De Niro.

However, the project might have just hit another snag. Variety also reports that distributor STX is less than pleased with the deal and is considering legal action against Mexican producer Gaston Pavlovich’s pending deal with Netflix. STX purchased all non-U.S. distribution rights last year at Cannes for $50 million, but now their position is in doubt with Pavlovich trying to create a worldwide deal with Netflix.

When reached for comment, STX issued the following statement: ““As a policy, STX does not comment on rumors or matters related to litigation.”

This has left foreign distributors who had planned to partner with STX on The Irishman scratching their heads. “It’s like you selling me an apartment and then saying someone else is going to move in,” said Stefano Massenzi of Italy’s Lucky Red, which purchased “The Irishman” for Italy.

For Pavlovich’s part, it looks like he was scrambling to make a deal after Paramount dropped The Irishman and following the poor box office for Silence, which Pavlovich also produced through his Fabrica de Cine banner. The film cost millions to make and promote, but ultimately only earned just $7 million in the U.S. and only one Oscar nomination. Additionally, that film was also embroiled in legal battles, specifically that Scorsese had delayed making the film and breached previous agreements that he would make Silence his next movie. The lawsuit was settled in January 2014.

It will be interesting to see if The Irishman can avoid legal woes. Right now, it seems like Pavlovich moved too hastily to sell rights that weren’t his to sell. That puts the project in a tenuous position. If the Netflix deal doesn’t go through, then The Irishman is still going to need a U.S. distributor, and it’s going to need one that can afford the big VFX budget the movie requires.

Joe Pesci Confirmed for Comeback in The Irishman! :woot:

Source: ComingSoon
Deadline is reporting that the legendary actor has now officially signed on to re-team with Scorsese and Robert De Niro for the film after reportedly turning the role down nearly 50 times. This will mark Pesci’s first onscreen role since 2010’s Love Ranch, his fourth teaming with Scorsese (after Raging Bull, Goodfellas and Casino) and his seventh with De Niro. He will portray Pennsylvania Mafia boss Russell Bufalino, who may have had a hand in the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa.

Hi Guys,

Just wondered what people views are on whether this will ever hit Blu-Ray. I am asking as I am a huge Scorsese fan and own most of his films on steelbook and if not steelbook, certainly on Blu Ray.

I'm an avid collector in general owning over 2000 blu rays and am not a fan of streaming really but with Netflix on the rise I am starting to get a bit worried! So far personally Netflix hasn't released anything to go to crazy about as I try to just buy films I love rather than like nowadays but this film in particular "should" be huge if Casino and Goodfellas are anything to go by.

I'm starting to think more films may follow and my collection will start to have holes in it! As much as I don't mind Netflix and I also subscribe to it, for certain films I do love a physical copy sitting on the shelf.

Will this ever hit home media? and if not on general blu ray could it be possible some of the premium steelbook retailers such as HD Zeta, Manta etc.. could get hold of it. Not sure exactly how it all works.

I'm gonna say pretty slim. I guess we'll have to wait to see if Bright is ever released on Blu-ray, but judging from their past films, this will never see a physical release... which sucks. That said, it's rumoured that in the deal between Netflix and Scorcese, he said that he wanted a theatrical release for his film, so you may be able to at least see this in a theatre for a limited time.

Yeh, i read that too. I think thats due to scorcese wanting the film to be able to be viewed as it should on the big screen and im not 100% but i believe it has to go to the theatre in order to qualify for a shot at the oscars.

I do worry this is the beginning of the end for home media, im sure it will take many years but i can just picture in 20 years time thinking back and saying i remember Netflix started it all!

I viewed them as quite low budget a few years back but with bright, the irishman and a view others they seem to be making more of a mark now.

Cool teaser! I wonder what they would've done if one of the name's didn't have an 'I' in it though lol.

haha Maybe the bullet could have stopped on its end and been an O? (if the actor had an O in their name) Other then that they couldn't cast you in this movie.
