Warner Bros. Television and the estate of J.R.R. Tolkien are in talks with Amazon Studios to develop a series based on the late author’s “The Lord of the Rings” novels. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is said by sources with knowledge of the situation to be personally involved in the negotiations, which are still in very early stages. No deal has been set.

The studio and the Tolkien estate have been shopping a series based on the classic fantasy novels and their assortment of hobbits, wizards, and warriors, sparking a competitive situation from which Amazon has emerged as the frontrunner.

Hm i don't know what to think about that.
the LOTR Trilogy is fantastic, Hobbit is not so fanatstic like LOTR. Why still miliking the cow. (Okay because milking the cow is what they like)
Why can't they let an amazing Trilogy be an amazing trilogy.

Off Topic:
I think this is the worst english sentence i ever produced :D

Well the movies left out a LOT from the novels. So in terms of substance, it would make sense to expand it.

But in saying that, the motion pictures have been so well received that it is a little repetitious to go down this path again.

Yeah, It would be one thing if the films weren't critically acclaimed or well received. But anything they do here will feel like a lesser version to the films.
They can't win...

that being said, I would still totally watch it.

Would have been great if they made a TV version of the Silmarillion but unfortunately Christopher Tolkien has denied film rights to that

Yeah something like that would make more sense.
Or even a series set in the world of Middle Earth but not a retelling of the LotR story itself (something like the game Shadow of Mordor?).

And who knows... maybe this is what they are doing?

Will Samwise Malone, the ladies' man Hobbit, get laid in this episode?
What about Merry and Pippin the two wisecracking guys always at the corner seats of the bar?
Will that crazy bearded fellow Aragorn come into the bar? What about his raven haired wife Arwen?
The Cheers model fits.:D

Amazon announced on Monday that it has acquired the global TV rights to J.R.R. Tolkien’s celebrated The Lord of the Rings fantasy novels, with a multi-season commitment that includes the potential for an additional spin-off series.

The Amazon Prime Original — which will explore new storylines preceding Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring — will be produced by Amazon Studios in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line Cinema (a division of Warner Bros. Entertainment).

The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen,” Amazon scripted chief Sharon Tal Yguado said in a statement. “We are honored to be working with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins and New Line on this exciting collaboration for television and are thrilled to be taking The Lord of the Rings fans on a new epic journey in Middle Earth.”

“We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings,” said a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins. “Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.”
