It's definitely worth a watch. Basically Final Destination but the humour is elevated substantially (and there's a monkey). I do think there were some average casting choices though for my money.
I left the cinema feeling a little blasé because there was a lull midway through and the ending was a little bit meh but also impressed with the humour of the kills.
Hasn't put me off wanting to see what Oz Perkins does next but it probably has tempered my expectations a little. I now know and enjoy he has an eclectic style though, with the tone of the serious Longlegs and the jovial The Monkey wide apart.
I didn't leave a review for this as I needed some time to reflect why I hadn't enjoyed it as much as maybe one should... and I think I figured out it was the casting.
I am not sure the casting director did a great job on The Monkey. Longlegs was cast very well e.g. Maika Monroe, Kiernan Shipka, Blair Underwood etc.. Although I'd imagine once you get Nic Cage, it makes things easier to attract whoever else you want. Whereas that's where I felt this film was lacking somewhat.
I'd still give it another whirl as only seen it the once and maybe this Theo fella isn't for me personally. I don't think he was particular awful... just I can imagine better. Elijah Woods role was also odd casting for me. Adam Scott
(for the very short time he's in it)
was great casting though. In fact if you told me Adam Scott was meant to be the lead but scheduling clashed with the rigorous work he did with season 2 of Severance.... It would make so much sense to me.
In summary:
Funny at times. Funny/Gory kills. Average casting overall but the odd gem, Tess Degenstein (as Barbara the estate agent) & Uncle Chip . Started better than it finished. 6/10. Companion still the funny horror of the year so far, for me.
Steelbook verdict...
I'll be grabbing The Monkey steelbook for sure . Hopefully full gloss and that'll look great!
It’s OK. Has a few laughs and plenty of gross deaths, but I’d take Heart Eyes over this for a comedy horror flick, but it was still an enjoyable 2ish hours.
