It's very famous in Japan and regarded as a landmark anime. It's definitely charming and the characters and designs are all lovely. However, it's also very very old-school, so it moves at its own sort of pace and does come off being a bit naive nowadays. I find it tonally similar to Mysterious Cities of Gold, but with Jules Verne instead of the whole Mayan/Incan/Aztec thing. Disney's Atlantis also ripped off a lot of stuff from it as well.
I watched the tv serie when I was younger and enjoyed it.
I guess nobody have enough money left for this release, because of all steelbook releases ...a very expensive year so far.
