Yeah! At least Spielberg said he would never deface one of his movies like that again...
Kind of funny, E.T. erased those for Politically Correct reasons, and yet Winnie the Pooh still slung a Thirty-Aught-Six!!
Apart from that, the gun / badge swap change on the front artwork just looks a bit awkward and unrealistic ... especially when the badge is revealed in a leather fold-over in the film ...
... and w/ poor ol' KC missing his lil' finger in the artwork:-
For a film set in the late '20s / early '30s - where the greatest attention to period detail was exercised with de Niro having his suits made by the same tailoring establishment that made Al Capone's suits and insisting on the same style of silk underwear that Capone wore - it's not surprising that the badge in the film looks kosher (when compared to historic examples):-
Obviously not the same care and attention to detail shown regarding the badge on the poster / steelbook.
As for Kevin Costner's ambidextrous quality - seen in BULL DURHAM (1988) ... where he's shown as a switch hitter - hitting both left and right-handed at different points in the film ... we can see it here with the guns:-
Considering this is now packaged in a v. smart, cool slipcase courtesy CM maybe a closer look at the cool effects on the steelbook itself and it's semi wraparound artwork is in order (courtesy nuikichiSB) :-
