Marvel Entertainment reported its First Quarter earnings today and gave a few updates on its upcoming movies during the company's quarterly conference call.

Iron Man 2 is, of course, already filming for a May 7, 2010 release, but Marvel said this morning that the Kenneth Branagh-directed Thor is scheduled to start filming in the First Quarter of 2010. No formal offers have been made to actors, though they said that casting announcements are likely the next few months. Thor is targeted for a May 20, 2011 release.

Marvel added that The First Avenger: Captain America, to be directed by Joe Johnston, is scheduled to start filming in the summer of 2010 for a July 22, 2011 release.

In an interview with Empire magazine, Marvel's President of Production Kevin Feige talked about The Avengers as well:

"Zak Penn is already on board The Avengers [as writer] and he's spending a lot of his time looking into what we're doing with Iron Man, Thor and Captain America, seeing how we're tying it all together. And he's beginning to outline the script now – he'll be doing that over the summer."

The Avengers is coming to theaters on May 4, 2012.

The Hulk Confirmed for Marvel's 'Avengers' Movie

Audiences and comic fans who feared that Edward Norton burned his bridges with Marvel, after the actor clashed with the studio over the final edit of The Incredible Hulk, may be surprised to hear that Norton is still Marvel's go-to guy for the role of Dr. Bruce Banner.

On the subject of the not-too-distant Avengers film, which sees Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor join forces to form a team, Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige told SFX Magazine that the Hulk would indeed be one of the teammates. On Norton returning to the role: "It's certainly our intention to use the same actors from film to film where we can."

More From Joe Johnston and Captain America

Film Journal got an update from director Joe Johnston about his next project, Marvel Studios' The First Avenger: Captain America:

"We're in prep," Johnston says. "Rick Heinrichs is production-designing and we're set up down in Manhattan Beach [California]. It's the part of the process that I love the most," he enthuses. "We have eight or ten really talented artists, and we all just sit around all day and draw pictures and say, 'Hey, wouldn't it be cool if we could do this?' It's that phase of the production where money doesn't matter: ‘Let's put all the greatest stuff up on the wall and [then later] see what we can afford.'" The film, he says at this early stage, will begin "in 1942, 1943" during World War II. "The stuff in the ’60s and ’70s [comic books] we're sort of avoiding. We're going back to the ’40s, and then forward to what they're doing with Captain America now."

The First Avenger: Captain America has set a July 22, 2011 release date for the film.

Fox 411 is reporting that John Krasinski is getting closer and closer to landing the title role in Marvel Studios' The First Avenger: Captain America.

According to the site, "The Office" star has appeared in front of producers repeatedly since the start of the new year and since rumors began in February:

"John has read 4 times and is doing screen tests," their source says. "He has screen tested 2 times so far. It's very likely that he will be the new Captain America. He is a favorite among the key decision makers and has been asked to come back for more this week."

The source added: "The big bosses are having him read with multiple actresses up for the female leads. They want to lock down the role and then they will narrow down everyone else."

uhhh....

Not sure if he is the right guy though, he doesn't give that authoritative feeling or at least of a badass. Could be because he is a goof ball in The Office.

Now Mike Fleming is reporting that Krasinski is out of the running for the role of Captain America, and that Marvel has expanded its search slightly. Details after the jump.

Of the original contenders, only two remain “in serious contention”: Mike Vogel (Cloverfield) and Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy). Marvel has also added Chris Evans to the mix. Vogal and Hedlund have a very similar look. I’m not sure what comic book fans will think of Evans, as the actor has already appeared in the Marvel Film Universe as Johnny Storm/Human Torch in the Fantastic Four films. Hedlund is my biggest concern about the upcoming Tron sequel (I didn’t think he came off good in the short clips in the new trailer). Hedlund was apparently on Marvel’s original wish list but was unable to test for the role at first due to “scheduling conflicts.”

Update: Heat Vision adds that Wilson Bethel, who starred in HBO’s Generation Kill and The Young and the Restless, is also one of the producer’s top contenders.

In addition to John Krasinski, the list of actors who tested for the role, but are now out of the running includes Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl), Scott Porter (Friday Night Lights), Michael Cassidy (Privileged) or Patrick Flueger (Brothers).
