Paramount are releasing TWO separate Steelbook editions though of the same movie (regular 2D AND a seperate 3D edition, has this been done before?) So they are giving you a choice. (probably most of the people who are complaining right now are usually giving out about the extra cost for a 3D disc they never wanted anyway!!) They are hardly breaking the law.

Seems they can't win for trying something new.

It states no 2d disc, doesnt actually state the 3d disc doesnt include 2d. Are we losing tho? Your 3d disc can be watched in 2d by using your tv remote and changing it.

I aint buying 2d steelbook when this version has what i want and is the best looking imo
Not every 3D TV has this ability to change 3D to 2D a lot do but not all

The BDA Blu-ray 3D finalised specification

The Blu-ray 3D specification calls for encoding 3D video using the Multiview Video Coding (MVC) codec, an extension to the ITU-T H.264 Advanced Video Coding (AVC) codec currently supported by all Blu-ray Disc players. MPEG4-MVC compresses both left and right eye views with a typical 50% overhead compared to equivalent 2D content, and can provide full 1080p resolution backward compatibility with current 2D Blu-ray Disc players. The specification also incorporates enhanced graphic features for 3D. These features provide a new experience for users, enabling navigation using 3D graphic menus and displaying 3D subtitles positioned in 3D video.

Part of the 3D Disc specification clearly states
Provide full 1080p resolution backward compatibility with current 2D Blu-ray Disc players
That means a 3D release must be capable of playing on a 2D player but will be in 2D only
The same also applies with 2D Discs and DVD Discs they must work on a 3D Blu-ray player

Some 3D Discs have this both a 3D and 2D version on the same disc
To comply with backward compatibility were the 3D disc does not include 2D version studios have included a 2D disc version in a release as a separate disc and this is mostly what we see now happen with 3D releases

With Transformers 3D release been Imax 3D it wont Work on 2D players as it does not have a 2D version
I don't know of 3D Imax Disc that can be played in 2D on 3D TVs using the 3D to 2D change on the TV unless one of you has managed this
I don't have a 3D Imax Disc yet to check it will work using the TV to change to 2D

Paramount UK so far are the only ones who have doing this and with previous Top Gun 3D release
Disney Did in US once release a 3D only Disc but got lot of complaints from the consumers and since then have included a 2D disc with their releases when its a 3D release

Does anyone have a 3D Imax Disc that can be played in 2D

If you have a 3D Tv you will be able to play this in 2D anyhow, theres an option (on my LG anyway) that says play in Normal 2D.

I dont see what the fuss is, if you dont have a 3D tv i guess the 2D steel will be more benefical for you, i realise the artwork is better in this release, but i guess paramount are giving you options.

Me personally I would much rather have this artwork and a 3D only disc than the 2D steelbook artwork with both discs either way.

I have a 3D TV and it can change from 3D to 2D but not all 3D TVs have this function as in the cheap 3D TVs

The regulations are about the 3D releases and been capable of playing on a 2D Blu-ray player (in 2D only as its not a 3D player) not about if your 3D TV is capable of switching 3D to 2D
This can only be achieved if the 3D disc has a 3d/2d version on the disc or provide a separate 2d disc in a same release ie 2 Discs a 3d disc and a 2d disc

The lesson learnt then is not to buy a cheap 3d tv lol

I am joking, but gee heck. Its a steelbook, you have a choice and as over half have sold so far it doesnt seem to bothering that many and those that it does do NOT have to buy it do they?

Hope you don't mind mate but I've posted this on Paramount Picture UK's Facebook page and emailed them for an answer.

Their website doesn't make it clear this is a 3D only release, and I suspect this may include 2D in the end, so I preordered anyhow.

If it is 3d only, then i can guarantee there will be many cancellations and returns, myself being one of them.

I only watch 2d, but like to know there's a 3d option for when I finally get a new TV.

All 3D disc releases in the UK MUST contain 2D and be able to work on 2D TV's. Whether that rule only applies to High street stores rather than the internet I don't know.

It states no 2d disc, doesnt state you can watch in 2d if you have the option on ya 3d tv
Its not about 3d TV
The reason why you have 2D disc included with 3D releases is so you can watch the film in 2d on a 2D Blu-ray Player and this then meets the requirement of The Blu-ray 3D specification
3D discs Releases are meant include 3D/2D on the 3D disc or to include a 2D Disc with the release
This is how they achieve the requirement of backwards compatibility with current 2D Blu-ray Disc players as set out by the BDA

That's why you have been getting a 2D disc with majority of 3D releases with some having the 2D version on the 3D disc itself instead of a separate 2D disc
Its not a legal requirement but its guideline agreed with the BDA and its members on the The Blu-ray 3D specification ability to be backwards compatibility with current 2D Blu-ray Disc players

For the millionth time paramount has already released a 3D only disc in the past - Top Gun 3d.

They did not comply with the BDA The Blu-ray 3D specification with Top Gun 3D release but no one made a complaint or did anything about it
In the USA Paramount did comply with the 3d specification as it included a 2D Disc
Paramount UK Top Gun 3D Disc did not comply with BDA Blu-ray 3D specification as there was no 2D version on the 3D Disc

That's why were getting a 2D Disc with other 3D releases as there was no 2D version on these 3D Disc Releases

Examples 3D Disc with 2D version on the 3D Disc
Predator 3D ( 3D Blu ray Disc only)
Avatar 3D (3D Blu ray Disc only)
Texas Chainsaw (3D Blu-ray Disc only)
The 3D Disc releases listed above included 3D/2D versions on the 3D disc
Which meant it could play the 2D version on a 2d Blu-ray player and you did not need a 3D Blu ray player to watch it in 2D but would have of course needed a 3d player to watch in 3D and a 3D TV

But was that disc able to play on older 2D machines in 2D? If the answer is no then Paramount has gone outside the agreed standard by which blu rays are produced and should be challenged on this.

What Paramount UK are doing I doubt the BDA will do anything about it but its something in my opinion they should do

Lets get back to the steelbook itself we can discuss the Blu-ray 3D specification in more relevant thread in Blu-ray player

I don't think they could differentiate.

Unless the law has changed recently, the only difference between high street and internet purchases are those on buyer protection.

If the regs say they MUST sell 2d and 3d in the same packaging, then they must.

So, the only thing likely to happen is this will either be withdrawn, or they will include a 2d disc - or I suspect there will be a stinker of a court case given that people seem to have been woken up to the Regulations on this matter.
