I received this from Entertainment Stores and it states it won't play in 2D.
Hi,
Thanks for your email.

I can confirm that this item comes with only 3D Blu-ray DVD and will only be playable on a 3D capable TV.

Thank you for your patience with this matter, and please do not hesitate to let me know if there’s anything else I can help with.

Regards,

hmmm, not sure how credible this contact person is if they use the term "3D Blu-ray DVD" ;)

Isn't this a case of some collectors wanting something that doesn't exist? If this release is 3D only you have the option to buy the other version, if you like this version and keep your collection sealed it's just another option. Unfortunately it appears if you want this artwork with both 2D and 3D it's not going to available via a UK steel.

Consumers who purchase any 3D Blu ray release are meant to be able to play it on a standard Blu ray Player as its a requirement of the 3D Specification
All 3D Discs have a 2D version on the disc itself but is often locked by the film studio and this is why they provide a separate 2D disc of a film with your 3D Blu ray Release

Why have you been getting a 2D Blu ray disc version of a Film with other 3D Releases answer is because its a requirement that all 3D Blu ray releases can be played on a Standard Blu ray Player in 2D

Some 3D Blu ray releases contain both 3D/2D version on the 3D Disc this is how its meant to be so it can be played on a Standard Blu ray player in 2D

If Paramount UK 3D Blu ray releases are 3D Disc only and have the 2D code locked on the 3D disc then this is a breach of the 3D Specification
The only other way they can meet this Specification is to include a 2D Blu ray of the Film or have the 2D Code on the 3D Disc unlocked with all 3D releases

I just dashed off an email to them stating clearly that Paramount are consequently in contravention of the BDA rules by which they ae bound and unless the 2D content is to be supplied by Paramount, then ES must withdraw the title from sale before its release date or they are essentially breaking the law, as are Paramount.

I'll let you know what excuse they come up with :)

Their not breaking the Law but are in breach of 3D Specification if 2D Playback is not possible
There is a difference its not a Law they would be breaking but a Specification not been met
BDA rules on 3D Specification are a agreement with its members not a Law

What could happen is BDA not list Paramount UK as one of its approved members
But I doubt they will act

In the final analysis the term used is a matter pedantics.

Though, I suspect it is a matter of law actually. Paramount are bound by the agreement on the specification as they along with all other studios signed up to the specification.
That is bound to have been ratified by a lawyer somewhere along the line; as there is no such thing as a gentleman's agreement any more.

Technically it's not illegal, but it does fall under retail guidelines as Disney found out when they were asked to withdraw a 3D only disc last year.

If Nazis like Disney can be forced to sort it out Paramount certainly can

I feel a Mod edit coming along on the second bit...

I sent one of yesterday but am still waiting for a reply.

Well Ronnie, the more of us that make our feelings known, and point out Paramount's obligations, the better.

I see what other members are saying, but I still feel that if Paramount entered an agreement with the BDA that there must be some legal binding aspect - I'd be surprised if there isn't as it's an agreement between professional organizations regarding retail matters.

If you look at it from Psyco's standpoint, then if you transgress retail guidelines, then it could still be taken as a legal matter, and even if it's not, as he points out, if Disney can be brought to book, then, like him, I don't see Paramount being an exception.

Alternatively, should someone buy this then seek legal advice I believe there is a case - could be wrong.

addition:

Interestingly, just perused the BDA website, and apparently the association whilst of a voluntary arrangement, are vested with the ownership of ALL the Blu-ray Disc trademarks, and logos, including Blu-ray3D and they an dthey alone licence the use of said trademarks and logos to the Studios etc.

So, that being the case, and the studios as we know entered an agreement with the BDA, then if they transgress the rules agreed with them the BDA can essentially stop them trading in Blu-ray goods - or at the very least stop them using the names, etc.
Imagine trying to sell Blu-rays but you can't say it's Blu-ray :)

There gentlemen is your legal aspect . . .

Addition 2:

I have just written to the BDA directly informing them of the state of play, and asking them if they propose to bring Paramount to book over this.

I suspect they have no idea about it - well, they didn't :)

Again, I'll let you know what happens.

To be honest guys I would rather get this released with just 3d disc than run the risk of it being cancelled due to all this fuss. Just saying. There is more liklihood of this getting cancelled than paramount giving in and that would make me very angry indeed.

I would actually buy this even if it had NO disc inside.

I once lived in a flat and one day the neighbour went out for the day and left their music on quite loud (some sh*t like Celine Dion if I remember). Anyway, the disc started jumping and basically skipped the same bit of a song on a loop all f**king day long.

Coming into this thread over the last few days just takes me back to that pointless day in my life when nothing happened but I will always remember it for how annoying it was.

Just saying...

SteelBook looks nice, regardless of what's inside

Yes mate, I read you, but you know as well as anyone it's what's inside that pretty steel box that counts - except for those who never open them, then the box is everything; but most of us want the pretty box AND content as it should be - now that's hardly pointless . . .

Lol love that.

I'm amazed you made it through that day. Especially if it was Celine. I remember reading about a woman beating and or strangling her husband for repeatedly singing thrift shop over and over for hours.

^^^^ if all you're interested in is the art - go buy a poster. Isn't this forum about movie collectors??
Are you kidding? Half of the people here don't open their steelbooks and will endlessly bang on about how much better the shrink wrapping is on Asian steels
