I think we have all been spoiled with having the choice of 3DBD/BD/DVD in every package.

The truth be told, if I buy a 3D package, I just pull out the 3D disc. The other two discs never even leave the case. It is a waste of plastic and effort, but it is a marketing gimmick by the studios.

Now that they have variant SteelBooks for the different releases, marketing has another way to get you to buy two copies. This is nothing new to comic book, and toy collectors, so you might as well get used to it because this tactic is here to stay.

That is, as long as people are suckered enough to buy all the variants.

That's understandable with Steelbooks there will be always different ones available and is good if you want different choice of artwork
I buy 3D Blu ray releases but I watch the 2D version more times than the 3D version but I do watch both the 3D version on occasion and sometimes a 3D Blu ray includes a extras disc that's not available in the 2D Blu ray release

But this situation with Paramount UK is not just about steelbooks
Its about all Paramount UK 3D Blu ray Releases including the 3D Steelbooks and its only Paramount UK who are doing this all other releases of this film in other countries Paramount are providing customers 3D/2D in their 3D Blu ray releases except UK customers
Why should UK Customers have to purchase twice to have 3D/2D when in other countries all they need to do is purchase a 3D Blu ray as it includes a 2D blu ray

No other film studio is dong this its only Paramount UK

??? Why Should UK Customers be left out when all other customers in other countries are not with this release

This is not strictly true. Apart from blufans which is a special case the UK is the only country to to get not only this artwork but a 3D steelbook. All other countries are getting 2D steelbook as far as I know.

This latest statement from the BDA certainly gives Paramount a get out clause. I've no desire to fan the flames of the earlier debate, which has run its course, but I think it worth noting that in their response, the BDA have avoided addressing the apparent contradictions between the above statement and their earlier ones, concerning the backwards compatibility of the then new 3D discs with existing 2D players. Those statements have already been quoted in this thread many times, and I have no desire to repeat them here, but they appear to have been swept under the carpet by the BDA in an almost Orwellian way, as though those statements had never been made in the first place.

I'm still interested to see what response, if any, Paramount provide to the enquiries that have been directed to them. Somehow, I can't see them publicly admitting that it's all down to corporate greed and maximising their profits, so they'll probably play the environmentally friendly card of allegedly not wanting to provide discs that are surplus to the buyer's needs and, therefore, a waste of finite resources.

Whatever, excuse they give, however, they still need to address the question as to why it is apparently only the UK that is being shafted. To put the issue into perspective, a cursory search of various international websites reveals that the standard 3D Blu-ray releases in the following countries, all contain a 2D disc as well.

USA, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Czech Republic, Sweden, Norway.

The list is not exhaustive as many countries have yet to announce the specs of their releases and I have only completed a cursory search. I have, however, yet to find a 3D release, other than the UK one, which specifically excludes a 2D disc, although others may appear in due course.

Yet, all of the above releases are from Paramount. So why are UK consumers being treated differently? Paramount may well be acting within the law but their actions strike me as morally reprehensible.

Hiya mate,

I have been discussing this with Paul in private and the BDA are in the throes of receiving some more questions by email regarding the very subject you mention, along with the fact that apparently the 2d content of the 3d disc should be unlocked and accessible (i.e. if not supplying a separate disc).
Unless they have recinded this part of the agreement, that should still stand.

As you say the UK (and Ireland, of course) market appear to be singled out for the bad treatment, and I agree that morally it is indeed reprehensible.
Personally, I think they have realized that the UK is the biggest Steelbook consumer in the world,, and that they intend in trying to milk it for all it's worth.

I guess we'll see :)

How many times is this gonna be said before people realise?

Ok, in plain bloody english!

You can watch a 3d disc in 2d by pressing your 3d button on the remote, it is not rocket science! Also if you dont have a 3d tv then dont buy it thinking you can watch it.

I wish people had the sense they was born with, but hey oh

I use one of the Passive LG tv sets, it doesn't have this option, but has a option under 3D settings to play in 2D.
