I always think about it as a story regarding the releationship between these two persons--- music, drums etc. are relevant aspects but the very bulk are these two guys (JK Simmons and Miles Teller) and how they interact. Basically theirs is an explosive dialectic full of toxic aspects, but on the flip side of this brutality they both grow and evolve.
