Willbar’s Cinema Room Build 2020

Long life dream of mine has always been to have my own Cinema Room which has been a long windy bumpy road getting here with plenty of hurdles ‘n’ roadblocks in the way but can now finally say it’s complete and was well worth the wait. All up including organising finance, design, structural certification for removal of support post, organising builder, tradies and contractors, painting and complete fit out it took just over 6 months with many late nights staying up to anywhere between 2-5am to get it all completed. Not only was this a Cinema Room Build it was a complete bottom level destruction and rebuild including 170m2 of new concrete being layed externally, two carport garage, laundry and bathroom some of which still needs painting and finish of tiling but that can be spread out over the course of the year to fully complete as the hard bits have already been done. So all in all a very big project but so stoked of what we achieved and so proud of our efforts. Huge props to our builder and trades who were very punctual rolling up at 6:30am and some days staying back to 7pm to get the work done for the day. Hope you enjoy the progression photos and the final result of my Cinema Room Build what a blast we had but glad it’s all over so now we can enjoy it as a family

SVS PB2000? what other gear are running? really nice room

Thank you :) SVS correct but it’s younger sibling the PB1000 which got repurposed along with my main 5 speakers from the old lounge room setup. Didn’t want to make any compromises in the key areas as money was running a little tight towards the end and as you know well 77” A9G’s don’t come cheap but still managed to get a sweet deal. Thought I would see how it all sounded in the new dedicated setup as I quite like my old equipment and love my Polk Signature Speakers.

Current Setup

Fronts - Polk Signature S50
Centre - Polk Signature S30
Rears - Polk Signature S15
Ceiling - Polk V60
Subwoofer - SVS PB1000
AVR - Marantz SR6014 9.2 Channel with 11 channel processing

Upgraded from a Yamaha so I’m absolutely loving the sound reproduction from the Marantz so far as it’s able to deliver on all levels with such finesse and precision. It also helps bring out the more neutral sound out of the Polks, It’s like I’m hearing them for the first time all over again. Running Audyssey XT32 was a lot of fun and such a breeze way better than YPAO.

wow, this looks awesome. even the toilet bowl in the middle... you are a f#ckin' genius.

Thanks mate, the challenging bit was removing the support post in the middle of the room shown in the third photo then getting a structural beam installed to compensate. The toilet bowl has seen better days for sure, try doing a sh!t with no walls up that’s when it gets really interesting

Amazing room, love it :cigar::cigar:. This is actually one of my dreams as well, but for now still far far away :grumpy:

Thanks for the kind words  it’s been a great build from concept to complete. I was the same a few years ago thinking it was far away but a few things lined up in my favour and was in a better position financially and just went for it. I’m sure it will work out for you in the end as well.

Amazing job. Looks fantastic. This is on my future list.

Thank you  well worth the $’s and a great way to complement your ever growing steelbook collection. I wish you all the best and good luck with crossing this off your future list.

Many thanks. We will move in the next few years and a cinema room/ space is firmly on the list.

Well done willbar.

One small thing that would bother me personally though, the light coming in around the edges of the blinds. It would have to be complete blackout for me.

Does this not bother you?

Thank you  well spotted it’s actually not the blinds but the doors. We have a cavity door behind the couch that leads into the bathroom/powder room and the cavity mechanism isn’t installed flush inside the door frame (protrudes by 1-2mm) this will be something addressed when the builders come back out as the lock mech is not working correctly. The other line is from the main door as I’ve yet to install DIY Raven Weather shields that helps stop noise, light and wind leakage which is also causing a slight breeze affecting the blind next to it to bounce ever so slighty on the wall. We’ve only just finish the build with the carpet being layed Tuesday and the OLED professionally wall hung on the Wednesday so it’s all very fresh :joy: complete blackout at night but yeah during the day just the two light leakages once addressed then it will be complete blackout.

I see your checklist is on point no cinema room or dedicated room no buy it’s as simple as that :D you sound exactly like me when we were looking at upgrading houses before we decided it was better financially just to do up our house just like how we want it.

Wow. Long project but we’ll worth it judging from the results.
My setup feels so inadequate right now

Looking back at the photos I see what you mean I thought you intially meant the two small light reflections on the tv coming from the door frames but your talking about the perimeter of the blind especially the one near the display cabinets. This is being exaggerated by being a windy day and not having weather seals installed around the door next to it yet. Light leakage on the bottom and sides can be fixed by weighting the bottom rail differently or using slider guides on the architraves of the windows causing it to sit more flush. Just enjoying the break from it all at the moment before I head back to work as I needed a week off to complete the build, thanks for your input it’s much appreciated  as yes it needs some attention fine tuning.

Thanks mate  don’t even want to think about the to do list I still have to do that I neglected so I could complete the Cinema Room, whoops  it will span out to over a year as there’s still lots to do and need to go back to work to earn some more money to afford it all haha. You’ve got a sweet setup and jealous of your killer steelbook collection, your doing just fine bud

Yes it was the window blinds I was on about. But I see you've got everything covered. Stellar job mate.

Are you an architect by any chance? Your attention to detail is regimental!

Congratulations @willbar84 that's a great accomplishment and one heck of a cinema room! I also love how tidy and organized your collection is presented. Resonates very well with my taste. But get rid of those pesky stickers on your Marantz AVR, please. ;)
Just one question: A 77" TV is huge, but with the available wall space, why didn't you go for a screen and projector? Or will this be a future addition?

Amazing room, love it :cigar::cigar:. This is actually one of my dreams as well, but for now still far far away :grumpy:

Put me down for an own home cinema, too! Sadly I can't see it happening anytime soon (or even later).

Cool yeah thought that was the case reading it over again, they are custom sized blackout blinds but obviously not 100% without a modification. Thanks mate for your kind words :notworthy::happy: I’m not an architect but thanks for the compliment  I’m actually a qualified mechanical engineer which lead me into a very niche field as I make custom tailored made manual ‘n’ electric wheelchairs for the disabled specialising with Cerebral Palsy Clients to give them the best quality of life.
