I now have confirmation that I can announce ... for all those worried about future packaging from Zavvi. My Play contact has been working with zavvi as well on this mission for better packaging. Between the 3 of us and the future comments from this community after its in place I'm sure it will be go over well.

Instances of Zavvi spine slashes-please post pics, details

[email protected]

From HDN Staff

If you are receiving Steelbooks with spine slashes, please post details and pics (if you have them here). We are trying to help by providing feedback on whether this is happening on top of the shrink wrap, or under the shrink wrap? Lets not use this for general Zavvi feedback and 'rants and raves' (please use retailer thread for that), and please contribute specifics here.

Thanks in advance!
DB

Update:

As of 8/11/2013 initial feedback received up this point has been shared with Zavvi. See here:

Please note, we have given the same opportunity for feedback for other retailers in the past, when this has occurred. By creating a new thread for Zavvi feedback, we're keeping things separate and specific on the forum.

We'll lock this one after we've gathered a number of examples.

Hi Digitalbabe

I personally don't think this is happening when the boxes are opened and actually at the source where produced.
The reason I state this is because it's being going on for a few years now and I have had the same slash marks on steelies from Amazon , Play , HMV and now Zavvi.
The strange thing is 99% of the time the wrapping is still intact and not slashed , surely if this was caused by knife across boxes to open the shrink wrapping would also be slashed would it not.

You're right. I remember this from ages ago. Steels are produced in one place and then get boxed up and sent somewhere else to get the j-cards and region specific stuff put in/on, then they are shrink wrapped. It's this stage where the slashes happen. They get shipped to retailers like that. That's why the shrink wrap is usually mint even though the slash is under it.

I always thought there are at least two production facilities involved:

1. Scanavo who manufacture the actual SteelBooks, package and ship them to "Facility X" (probably multiple facilities around the world).

2. Facility X, where the SteelBook packages are opened, sometimes by "the slashers". Here the disks, booklets, J-cards, slip covers, etc. are added before the final shrinkwrapping.

I'd be very interested to learn more about the journey of a SteelBook from Scanavo to the distributors, maybe somebody in the know could enlighten us? :)

At whatever stage of the process the spine slash happens, the retailer is the one feeling the heat for it, both in money and reputation, which should encourage them even more to get this sorted out.

I presume all retailers have customer feedback/insight/relations departments who SHOULD be spotting the plethora of complaints about the same thing, how the hell have they not got it sorted yet? it's unbelievable

I hope to not sound like an ass here, but we've had this discussion before and seemingly nothing has be done about it. It's definitely happening mostly before retailers get them, but some do seem to get slashed through the wrapper too. I'd estimate a 90/10 split.

I don't get why Zavvi are being singled out in the thread title too, this has been happening for years, long before Zavvi jumped on board.

Simon, thanks for your comments. Correct-Zavvi is not being singled out. We have had threads like this previously for when Play/HMV etc were having these issues too. Feedback was passed back to them, and it helped them identify some more details as to what could be happening. We can't 'solve' a retailer's problems for them, no matter where in the process things like this occur, but as our community can provide and is often willing to provide concrete examples and pictures, I decided to start a new thread here, so we can provide specifics to them to see if this can be addressed.

Thanks all!

Understandable, thanks for the explanation DB. I still firmly believe this is mostly happening before retailers get them, and really needs to be addressed from Scanavo down. However, the retailers do need to make a stand and request better quality control too, otherwise nothing will continue to get done.

Hi guys, if you could like to share actual pictures of spine slashes on Steels that you have received from Zavvi, and can provide some specifics, please do so here. We'd like to be able to provide more details to them, to help them hopefully track down where exactly's it's happening. We're seeing this as a positive step towards addressing some community concerns, and hope you will, as well. Thanks in advance for your feedback here.

My guess is it's happening at the Zavvi warehouse- I imagine they receive the steelbooks from the manufacturer and whoever is then opening the box to send out to customers is slashing the spine as they use a stanley knife or boxcutter to open that box.
I've seen the exact same thing happen to slipcovers getting a slashed spine in stores when the blurays are being unboxed and put on the store shelves for sale.

I think Jimmyv suggested this and I believe it would solve most problems - All Scananvo needs to do is lay a piece of cardboard on top of the steels when they pack them up and send them off. That way when the box cutters open them, they are slashing into cardboard instead of the steels. Top & Bottom just to make sure they don't open the wrong side. Then the SB packers re-seal them and place that cardboard back on top so the retailer doesn't slash them when they open the box. Unless they are opening these boxes with Michael Meyers' kitchen knife, wouldn't that solve the problem?

Most likely it will, however trying to convince the right people in charge isn't so easy (like most things in life, eh).
