Bill Condon to Direct Live-Action ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Film for Disney! (EXCLUSIVE)
http://variety.com/2014/film/news/bill-condon-beauty-and-the-beast-disney-1201151834/

With the recent release of “Maleficent,” which grossed more than $170 million worldwide in its opening weekend, Disney is working fast on its next live-action fairy-tale adaptation.

Bill Condon is set to direct a live-action version of “Beauty and the Beast” for Disney.

Evan Spiliotopoulos is writing the script with Mandeville Films producing.

The studio’s 1991 animated feature version of “Beauty and the Beast” grossed more than $375 million worldwide, spawned a Broadway play and became one of the few animated pics to receive a best picture Oscar nomination.

Disney has been on a roll lately thanks to successful updates of literary classics like “Alice and Wonderland” and “The Wizard of Oz” and reinventions of its own stories into big box office hits. The Mouse House is also developing a live-action version of “The Jungle Book,” which has Jon Favreau directing, and its “Cinderella,” helmed by Kenneth Branagh, is set to bow next March.

Condon is best known for his hit feature adaptation of the musical “Dreamgirls,” and his experience in helming a film with strong musical elements will help this film, which could very easily go down that path. Condon also penned the script to the widely successful adaptation of musical “Chicago.” He also delivered two of the best reviewed films in the “Twilight” series.

Saw this tonight and thought it was pretty good. I enjoyed it more than the recent Cinderella and Snow White live action remakes. I didn't read too much about this version, but I was surprised they had a few original songs and new scenes that the animated version didn't have. I didn't care much for the new songs, but a few of the extra scenes gave some extra character backstory which I didn't know about.

Emma Watson and Dan Stevens as the leads are fine and while they're singing isn't quite as good as the animated movie's voice actors, it's still solid. The standpoint performance to me was Luke Evans as Gaston. He embodied the character so well and had so much fun with the role I wish everyone took his approach. Ewan McGregor was another standout that I enjoyed. The controversy with Josh Gad's character was very overblown and I thought his character added lots of good comedic relief. I did have a nitpick that they did not do the scene/song of Beauty of the Beast justice. Emma Thompson's version just felt a bit off to me and the entire scene wasn't directed as magical as it could have been. It was still a decent scene, but considering it's the most iconic part of the movie, I was underwhelmed by it.

Overall this remake is solid, but isn't close to being better to the original, which I consider a top 5 all time animated movie. It's worth seeing on the big screen and you'll have a good time.

Saw this in Imax today with the wife and granddaughters and we all loved it, the 5 year old wanted to take a nap but she was so enthralled she made it through the whole film. I also think that Luke Evans played Gaston perfectly. We all saw the Broadway production last year so no fair comparison there for the singing but the cinematography and acting made up for it. The theater was packed and the audience actually clapped after sevral scenes which shows how engaging the whole experience was. Disney is still king when it comes to blockbuster family entertainment.

The runtime for this is a lot longer then I thought it would be. Goes over 2 hours! Thats great that she made it through the whole thing.

Oh and just a reminder incase anyone forgot. IMAX is the best way to see this. Has an expanded aspect ratio and it looks beautiful!

Great adaptation. Loved it and can't wait to listen through the soundtrack the first chance I get. I was a bit worried near the end, because I realized I hadn't teared up, but the very end of the movie got me.
