Call of Duty: Black Ops Megathread

Looks like that earlier report wasn't quite on the mark, as the next Call of Duty game from developers Treyarch now has a name, and it's not Vietnam. It's Call of Duty: Black Ops.

The game's website has accidentally gone live, and while no content of worth can be accessed aside from an empty blog, there's a big logo sitting there for you to stare at.

The "Black Ops" name certainly falls in line with our earlier guesswork, which was that the game's action encompasses much more than Vietnam, taking you on a tour of various Cold War hotspots. Or...it could just be a Black Ops team in Vietnam. We don't know, and won't know until later tonight when the game is officially revealed.

That giant date seems to suggest the game will be out on November 9.

Pre-Order Trailer:

GameStop lists the Prestige Edition at $150 USD and the Hardened Edition for $80, but Activision has not released official pricing. The Prestige Edition features a working RC car with a camera that provides TFT color video and audio. The package also includes the Black Ops medallion, a PlayStation 3 Home Avatar, four co-op multiplayer maps, and of course, the game. You can also opt for the Hardened Edition, which includes everything in the Prestige Edition minus the RC car, sadly.

Last but certainly not least, we'd like to touch on some of the multiplayer/Co-op details that we were able to get our hands on. Although Treyarch isn't ready to rip the top off of the competitive side of things, we were given the chance to talk with Dan Bunting and David "Vahn" Vohnderhaar, who both are working extremely hard on the multiplayer portion of Black Ops. Instead of attempting to thread their words into a neatly woven paragraph, we're giving you bullet points. Dig in...

* The Black Ops mp team is twice the size compared to the mp team of World at War
* Work on multiplayer began on day one
* There is no time period for multiplayer, giving us access to more toys and tools
* Vehicles will return for mp, although not how you know them in CoD's of past
* The mp team reads the forums, blogs, Twitter, etc. and are sensitive to what the community says
* No mp maps have been taken from sp, although some sp maps have been taken from mp
* Create-a-Class customization is deep and includes many new features
* Focus is being put on varied playlists, including those for old school gamers ala Barebones
* The team is also focused on how to extend the game once you leave your console/PC
* Many of your favorite weapons will be seen, although we can't speak specifics
* Region filter will return
* Leave with party feature sounded to be making a return
* Host migration will be included
* Auto-aim ("Sticky Aim") will have a toggle on/off option
* Focused on preventing hackers/modders with a dedicated "security team"
* 2-4 play Co-op will return, and it's not Campaign Co-op, rather a "really fun co-op mode that you and your friends will love to sit on the couch and play". Speculate away people.
* It looks like dedicated servers will be returning to the PC version, although mod tools are still in question.

Black Ops MP Trailer: 8 Secrets You Missed

Were you paying attention during the trailer? Gold stars to anyone who noticed these beauties!

Clan Name Weapon Decals
01:01
Now this is exciting. Some of you may have spotted the smiley-faced red dot sight. Some may have even seen the potentially custom smiley decal on the side of the gun at 00:11. But how many of you spotted the clan name on the gun itself? It’s so in your face, we almost missed it. Check at around 1:01; on the horizontal stock widget on top of the barrel, you’ll see the letters TMKS scratched into the gun, just below your team-mate (MatTKS) running ahead of you. How awesome is that?

390_13281_Picture5.jpg

It's amazing what you see when you keep 'em peeled.

Callsigns Have No Titles
00:10
Although they might by the time the game comes out. The Callsigns’ total lack of title may mean something else – which incidentally, sits quite nicely with Treyarch’s user-generated content credos – that the titles may be able to be written by the users themselves? So long as it has the world’s most expensive, meta-complex swear-filter, this could be brilliant.

“did Kojima have a hand here? It’s all gone a bit Metal Gear.”

BGM-71 TOW Fly By Wire Missile
01:09
The fly-by-wire missile seen in the trailer – which is launched down a corridor, smashes through some plate glass, then annihilates a sniper – is none other than the catchily named BGM-71 TOW. Not at all a mouthful during fitful comms chatter; “Look out, there’s a BGM-7 … oh, you died …” Most likely to be dubbed the TOW (Toe) by players then, its name stands for Tube-launched Optically-tracked, Wire data link guided missile.

AH-1 Cobra Gunship
00:51
The narrow profile of the mini-map attack helicopter and its setting in 1968, means only one possible candidate. Bell Helicopter’s slimmer members of the Bell Huey family – sometimes referred to simply as ‘Snake’ (as in ‘Snake… Snaaaaaaaaaake!’) – were brought into service during Vietnam in response to the effectiveness of Việt Cộng ground support against the bulky, and largely unarmed Bell UH-1 Iroquois; did Kojima have a hand here? It’s all gone a bit Metal Gear.

No Entry Toi Unauthorised Personnel. Apparently.

User-created Emblems
00:40
We hope not to offend Treyarch, but the emblems on show during the MP reveal, hint to us that they may be user-created. They differ from Infinity Ward’s efforts in being composed entirely from two-dimensional cutouts. To us, this smacks of a poseable decal system in which players can create their own art from a set of prefab clips. It’s the next natural step, when you really think about it.

Внимание! Не Входиte без разрешения
00:58
Attention! No Entry Without Authorisation. It’s written everywhere throughout the trailer. That’s what it says in English. We have a Russian in the office. And so ends the most useless observation a human being has ever made in regard to a game trailer.

390_13282_Picture6.jpg

Motion Tracking Mines/Grenades
01:05
Just before the sniper is wiped off of the face of the Earth by an incoming TOW, check the mini-map. In it, you’ll see the sonar-like wave emanating out from the point behind him, highlighting an approaching enemy. A leaf out of Battlefield: Bad Company 2’s book? Perhaps, but we’re yet to discover whether this will be in the form of a grenade, or as a limpet device of some kind, which could well be the icon which appears on the up D-Pad direction at around 00:17.

CH-47 Care Package Drop
00:35
It’s the big old Chinooks (CH-47s) bringing in the drops this time out. And by the looks of things, they hand around longer, and lower, than their Modern Warfare 2 counterparts, leading us to believe that they can, and will be shot down. That’s if they don’t crash all by themselves; Chinooks are good at that.

Treyarch Confirm Zombies

Whilst Gamestop may have leaked the information a little earlier than supposedly planned, Treyarch have just confirmed that the Zombies maps are to be available to those that purchase upcoming title, Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Download 360Zine Issue 43360Zine Issue 43 GamerZines Magazine For our latest Call of Duty Black Ops coverage, click here to download 360Zine Issue 43 for free.In a short message, Josh Olin, Community Manager at Treyarch, confirmed that the four co-operative maps set to be included within both Hardened and Prestige editions of the game are, as rumoured, the zombies maps seen within their previous Call of Duty title, World at War.

Olin's full message was as follows, "All 4 existing CoDWaW Zombies maps will be included in Hardened & Prestige editions of CODBlackOps as callback co-op levels!"

Call of Duty: Black Ops is due to release worldwide on November 9th.

its not that u get the zombie maps for zombies again as those will be new maps... you get the ol zombie maps but as CO-OP LEVELS! Which is bad ass since those levels only had a portion of them accessible, so now the whole level is open.

I also dont think the prestige editions are stuff u should be using alot but more so a collector item. I always get the hardened edition, comes with some extra stuff and a steelbook which I obviously like.

I just hope I Play black ops more than that cartoony MW2.

The new demo of Call of Duty: Black Ops that Activision is showing here at Gamescom 2010 doesn't quite start off with a bang. In fact, it's more of that gurgling sound you hear when certain objects start sinking underwater. That's not a bad thing, because we're not talking in metaphors here--you literally start the level trapped inside a downed helicopter sinking to the bottom of the Huong River. It's a tense sequence that sees you making a desperate escape while swimming through murky water with more than a few dead bodies in it.

<OBJECT classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" WIDTH=640 HEIGHT=391 id="videoPlayer"><PARAM NAME=movie VALUE="http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/cne_flash/production/eidothea/release/eidothea.swf?w_005_f"><PARAM NAME=scale VALUE="noScale"><PARAM NAME=salign VALUE="lt"><PARAM NAME=quality VALUE=high><PARAM NAME=allowscriptaccess VALUE="always"><PARAM NAME=allowFullScreen VALUE="true"><PARAM NAME=flashvars VALUE="bwr=0&playerMode=embedded&movieAspect=16.9&mapp=embedded_640&gen=1&viewMode=sd&autoPlay=false&paramsXML=http%3A%2F%2Fuk.gamespot.com%2Fpages%2Fvideo_player%2Fxml.php%3Fid%3D6274134%26mode%3Dembedded%26width%3D640%26height%3D391%26newplayer%3D1%26skin%3DeidotheaEmbedded640_169.xml"><embed id="mymovie" width="640" height="391" flashvars="bwr=0&playerMode=embedded&movieAspect=16.9&mapp=embedded_640&gen=1&viewMode=sd&autoPlay=false&paramsXML=http%3A%2F%2Fuk.gamespot.com%2Fpages%2Fvideo_player%2Fxml.php%3Fid%3D6274134%26mode%3Dembedded%26width%3D640%26height%3D391%26newplayer%3D1%26skin%3DeidotheaEmbedded640_169.xml" wmode="opaque" allowscriptaccess="always" scale="noScale" salign="lt" allowFullScreen="true" quality="high" name="mymovie" style="" src="http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/cne_flash/production/eidothea/release/eidothea.swf?w_005_f" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"/></embed></OBJECT>

If the sight of those bodies sinking to the bottom of the river while you're trying to swim to the top of it doesn't grab you, then the level's roller-coaster pacing will. The whole level, dubbed Victor Charlie, is one great big crescendo that starts off slow and methodical, explodes in the middle, and then slows back down for a bit toward the end. To give you an idea of how it builds up, let's go back to the beginning. Once you get out of that river, you make your way through some waterfront huts and meet up with your squadmates, those grizzled deniable ops supersoldiers who operate with vicious efficiency and sport some pretty awesome tattoos to boot. With them at your side you slowly and silently creep into an enemy hut while one of the bad guys, asleep on the job, is taking a nap.

What happens next isn't for the faint of heart, but the gist is that you cover his mouth and sink your knife quickly and silently into his throat in a grim scene of surgical violence. OK, so maybe that's not so much the gist as precisely what happens. At any rate, you continue along at a similar pace to get through this dangerous area unseen while dispatching a few more foes and taking another dip or two into the river (complete with first-person swimming) before getting to a village a bit farther inland. And that, well, that's when things get really hot. The mission requires you to plant some C4 on a target building, and that explosion obviously attracts a lot of attention. The transition from all that sneaking about to this swarming bee's nest of a shoot-out is something else and definitely seems like it will keep a lot of players on their toes.

The firefight is a bit more of that classic Call of Duty, with fast-paced gun combat and more than a few explosions. A few of the highlights we noticed were the ways those wooden houses explode in a flurry of debris when you hit them with your M16's underslung grenade launcher, and those handful of desperate enemies who come charging out of nowhere with a clear desire to skill you not with a gun, but with a gentlemanly knife to the chest. After that you hop into a dim, claustrophobic tunnel in a sequence that has you crawling through some pretty creepy scenery while encountering a few grim surprises along the way.

After Victor Charlie wrapped up, we had the chance to see the helicopter level that Treyarch demoed during Microsoft's E3 2010 press conference a couple of months ago. Named Payback, this level takes the aircraft sequences we've seen from time to time in previous Call of Duty games and lets you actually pilot the thing (while still operating the guns, of course). After sneaking up on a group of soldiers guarding a Russian Hind helicopter and taking them out, you hop into the attack chopper and fly through a river canyon shooting down on-foot enemies, armored trucks, helicopters, and entire bridges. You can read our initial impressions from the press conference demo for more details, but suffice it to say that this level managed to put a new spin on the type of vehicle moments the Call of Duty series has previously been known for.

All told, Call of Duty: Black Ops is looking quite good. That's not exactly a surprise for a series that has garnered plenty of glowing reviews over the years, but it's good to see that Treyarch has been able to jump into a new timeline--Cold War-era conflicts--without missing a step. Expect to see more coverage on Black Ops before the game is released on November 9.

“I can objectively say that it’s the best game Treyarch’s ever made, period,” claimed Josh Olin, the studio’s community manager, referring to Call of Duty: Black Ops at a recent Activision press event in New York. This was after he showed live gameplay demos of two missions from the campaign of the upcoming Cold War-era first-person shooter, and although I really enjoyed 2004’s Spider-Man 2, I’m inclined to believe him.

In the wake of the veritable dissolution of Infinity Ward -- the developer behind the phenomenally successful Modern Warfare games -- Treyarch is in a unique position, poised to usurp the throne of ‘marquee Call of Duty developer.’ From what I’ve seen of Black Ops, they’re well on their way.

1

Call of Duty: Black Ops (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 [previewed], PC, Wii, DS)
Developer: Treyarch (PS3, 360, PC, Wii) / n-Space (DS)
Publisher: Activision
To be released: November 9, 2010

The demo started with a mission called “Victor Charlie,” in which you’re part of an elite group of soldiers investigating potential Soviet involvement in the area of Vietnam’s Huong River. Not wanting to give away too much about the story, he wouldn’t specify a time frame. The mission opened with muffled cries of alarm, and the player’s blurred vision slowly focused on the cockpit of a downed helicopter inside which the water level was rapidly rising. As if that weren’t bad enough, gunfire shattered the windshield, and within moments, the vehicle plunged into the river.

Playing as a character named Mason, Olin wrenched open a door and swam out while more bullets pierced the surface of the water. He made his way to a boat, where he surprised a Vietnamese soldier from behind, taking control of his gun and drawing fire to his newly acquired human shield. Then he took careful aim at the head of the last standing enemy and fired, and the first-person camera switched to a cinematic angle that followed the bullet in slow motion as it entered Victor Charlie’s forehead. The moment stood out to me, and not necessarily in a good way -- it certainly looked cool, but it was a stark contrast to the tone of the rest of what I saw.

2

Modern Warfare 2 was certainly a serious game, but it entertained players with bombastic spectacle. Black Ops generally doesn’t celebrate war; instead, since you play as the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam - Studies and Observations Group -- a US special operations unit -- it presents a more brutal, improvisational, accomplish-your-objectives-by-the-seat-of-your-pants picture of the Vietnam conflict. Don’t get me wrong -- this is a Call of Duty game, and when Olin rained down rockets from a helicopter, the blistering explosions reminded me of Apocalypse Now and its gung-ho Lt. Col. Kilgore. But the significant stealth aspect of Black Ops means that much of the combat is more up close and personal, and there’s simply nothing pretty or glorious about the vicious, anything-goes guerrilla tactics that you and your enemies use against each other.

After the cinematic kill, Olin skipped ahead to avoid spoiling the story, and came to a sequence where his AI leader handed him some Semtex -- a brand-new plastic explosive in 1964 -- to plant on the foundations of a hut, so the group would have a distraction before an assault on a village. Mason set the explosive and then climbed into a hut, where he stabbed a sleeping Vietnamese soldier and slit the throat of another guard. Next, he rejoined his teammates outside the village. They detonated the Semtex, and then engaged the Vietcong in the area. Upon clearing the village, they headed toward a dock where an anti-air gun sat in a reinforced setup. Using a grenade launcher, Mason made quick work of the gun and everything around it.

The next segment of the mission exemplified the gritty, brutish nature of the Vietnam War. Mason’s squad came upon a tunnel whose entrance was covered by some forest undergrowth. Once they tossed in a grenade to clear out the Vietcong inside, Mason and a teammate climbed down into the tunnel. (Treyarch showed this part of the mission at Microsoft’s E3 press conference.) They crawled past the maimed corpses of the men they had just blown up, while rats scurried past them. Water seeped in from the sides and dripped from the ceiling of the dank tunnel, as Mason shined a flashlight for his buddy ahead of him. Just as the soldier turned a corner, a Vietcong soldier stabbed him before Mason could do a thing; after killing the enemy, Mason had to simply forge ahead past the lifeless body of his squadmate.

3

At a fork, someone jumped into the tunnel; a shocked Mason almost fired on instinct before realizing it was Reznov, a comrade whom you will recognize from the studio’s previous Call of Duty game, 2008’s World at War. “Reznov! You nearly took a bullet,” exclaimed Mason -- yes, the playable characters actually speak in this game. A few moments later, Reznov wrestled savagely with an enemy in a puddle before stabbing him; I thought to myself, “This Reznov guy is a bad dude.” He then told Mason to go forward, saying that he would flank the enemy. Further ahead, the tunnel opened into a pitch-black room; as soon as Mason and his flashlight beam turned the corner, bullets streamed toward him from the darkness. He returned fire, downing a few, before Reznov took out the others from a side tunnel.

Treyarch is promising an “incredible narrative” in Black Ops. Olin acknowledged that the tale told by World at War was rather simple -- “good guys, bad guys, try to beat the [...] Imperial Japanese Army” -- but asserted that this game has a “much more complicated and deep story.” He explained the setting by pointing out that the covert group you play as in Black Ops isn’t fighting the war itself; that’s a job for the common soldiers. “You’re actually on a specific mission [...] that furthers our fictional plot,” said Olin, saying that Treyarch is “weaving [the narrative] through reference points in time.”

One of the ways in which they’re improving their storytelling is through full performance capture, a technique in which a motion-capture actor’s face is tracked along with his body. It allows Treyarch to bring much more emotion into the game by providing more realistic facial expressions. The second mission that Olin showed me, “Payback,” featured an escape from imprisonment. Mason was joined this time by a soldier named Woods, and in the section I saw, the two came upon a camp with a Hind helicopter. Woods turned to Mason and declared, “You see that Hind? I’m gonna take it!” What struck me wasn’t his daring boast. Instead, I noticed that his eyes were narrowed, his brow was furrowed, and he kept looking around nervously; I’d describe his temperament as “crazed.” Perhaps his time in captivity made him that way.

4

Black Ops looks to be another high-octane blockbuster entry in the Call of Duty franchise, but its dark undertones suggest to me a somber gravity that I didn’t find in the Modern Warfare games. If Treyarch keeps up that tone throughout the whole story, this might be the most mature Call of Duty game yet.

Treyarch admits it is unlikely to go back to WWII for CoD

Call of Duty: Black Ops developer Treyarch has indicated it is unlikely to return to a World War II setting for future instalments in the series following three 1940s-based efforts in CoD: Big Red One, CoD 3 and CoD: World at War.

Chatting with Spong at GamesCom last week, community boss Josh Olin commented, “I don’t think we would go back, because we’ve done a lot of World War II.”

However, Olin went on to say that a revisit to WWII would still be on the cards providing that it would offer players something “fresh”, pointing to the developer’s efforts with World at War, which offered a new perspective on the conflict by setting the action in the South Pacific.

“I’m not saying that the genre’s done. It would be important that, if there ever were to be another game set in the World War II era, it would have to be something that’s fresh and new. You still have to by that code and do something players haven’t seen before,” he said.

“So, World at War was one example of that. We brought the players for the first time to the South Pacific to fight the imperial Japanese army. It was a different game to the other World War II shooters in the franchise. So, as long as there’s new experiences people will still play them.”

Call of Duty: Black Ops represents Treyarch’s first foray in to a post-WWII setting, taking place during the Cold War. The game hits store shelves for PS3 on November 9.

Four new Wager Match game modes, separate from your standard rank progression in multiplayer competitive modes.
One in the chamber: - Everyone has just a pistol with one bullet and three lives. If you kill someone you get a bullet.
Sticks and stones: You have crossbows and ballistic knives plus a tomahawk. If a player is killed with a tomahawk they go bankrupted.
Gun Game: A series of progressive weapons, from pistol to shotgun to sniper rifle, granted to the player after kills. First one to progress through the weapons wins. If you get knifed you get reset a level.
Sharpshooter: Everyone uses the same randomly selected weapon and unlocks perks per kill. Unlock a better gun with each kill…and lose a “level/gun” with death instead of starting from the beginning.

Customization

Players have a special attachment for their weapons; they can place clan tags, decals and custom red dots on their weapons using this attachment.
Flamethrowers, sniper rifles, shotguns… everything can be customized

Black Ops zombies shot down by Treyarch

Call of Duty: Black Ops developer Treyarch has severely dampened chances of World at War's extremely popular Zombies mode appearing in the new game, telling CVG "this is it" as far as major feature reveals go.

Speaking to CVG at the Black Ops multiplayer reveal event in LA this morning, Treyarch community man Josh Olin said the developer only has "little things" left to reveal on the multiplayer side. We can't talk for it, but we wouldn't class Zombies as a "little" feature.

"This is pretty much it," Olin told CVG. "There are still some other little things that we haven't talked about yet but will at a later date, but this is pretty much the whole caboodle."

Asked if that means Treyarch's shown all major features for Black Ops, Olin replied: "Yes, this is what we've been working on for the past two years,"

Last month a retailer listed Black Ops zombie maps as freebies included with the game's special edition. Bar miscommunication though, it looks like we could be disappointed.

This game is sounding better with each post. I guess I'll have to break down and pick it up.

It looks like Best Buy has the best pre-order deal as long as you are a Reward Zone member. They are giving 500 extra RZ points for buying the game, plus the normal points based off of what you pay for the game. Gamestop is giving you an avatar. 500+ points for my copy, 500+ points for Diva's copy, and the 500+ points for Fallout: New Vegas will be really nice, and get Diva and I a free $30 at BB once all the games come out.

im really interested in the attack dogs kill streak. im assuming its the same as the dogs from that one level in MW2 where you have to chase the guy through that town with all the alleys and dogs come after you...maybe thats the special ops mission tho.

anyway, sounds like there should be some interesting kill streaks. this might be my only fall game this year i pick up
