Dead Space 2, Ignition, Extraction, Aftermath, and Salvage

It’s been a busy few days for Dead Space fans; a lot of news has come to light over the last week. While Dead Space 2 is still on track for early 2011, the world of Isaac Clarke is spreading like necromorphs through a ventilation system.

In this interview from last week’s EA Showcase, Dead Space 2 Producer Rich Briggs answers your questions about Dead Space 2 and the PS3-exclusive HD edition of Dead Space Extraction, and details the forthcoming Dead Space Ignition (which will tie in to DS2).

Later on in the week, EA/Visceral Games made even more Dead Space-related announcements at Comic-Con. Here’s Dead Space 2 executive producer Steve Papoutsis with details for our readers:

Today is a very exciting day for the Dead Space franchise. I’m proud to announce 2 new fiction extensions for the Dead Space universe.

Dead Space Aftermath is our second animated feature. It tells the story of what happened after Isaac had his encounter with the red marker. We are working on this with Starz/Film Roman and will be released January 2011.

Dead Space Salvage is a new graphic novel featuring the talented artist Christopher Shy. It takes a peak at what happened to the Ishimura after Isaac departed.

Both of these additions will continue to expand the Dead Space fiction and we can’t wait to see what people think when they get to enjoy them.

EA registers new domain - Dead Space: Sabotage

Electronic Arts has registered a new website domain under the name of Dead Space: Sabotage.

The publisher previously commented that it aims to reveal the backstory of upcoming sequel Dead Space 2 via a series of side projects including an animated feature, graphic novel and the recently announced Dead Space: Ignition; a downloadable text-based adventure for PSN.

We'll keep an eye on any developments and be sure to keep you in the loop. Dead Space 2 is scheduled for release on January 25 in North America, with a European launch following on January 28.

Dead Space 2 multiplayer to get GTTV reveal

Geoff Keighley has confirmed that the next instalment of GameTrailers TV will play host to the first details pertaining to Dead Space 2’s multiplayer component.

Few details have been released on the sequel’s multiplayer since the game's announcement, though recent rumors have indicated it’ll include a death-match style mode that pits deadly Necromorphs against heavily armed soldiers.

The next episode of GTTV airs this Friday, so keep your eyes peeled for more information over the next few days.

Dead Space 2 is scheduled for release on January 28, 2011.

Dead Space 2 Trailer Sees Isaac Float Through Space

Space is conveyed as an eerily beautiful void in movies like Moon and 2001: A Space Odyssey, but we doubt that Dead Space 2's Isaac Clarke gets to appreciate that as he soars through the stars stuck in a halo jump, weaving through a ton of floating space junk and debris on his way down to the landing zone.

This trailer is the one that Visceral showed during EA's press conference at Gamescom this year, revealing that Clarke now has some sort of repulsor jet boots at his disposal, that enable him to perform halo jumps through space. Expect a few more sections like the one in the video then.

Dead Space 2 is lurking in the shadows waiting to jump out for a January 2011 release. Check out the in the OP.

Dead Space 2 for PS3: Multiplayer Screens and First Info

Hello PlayStation community! The Dead Space 2 team is excited to bring you something for the first time in the history of the franchise — the ability to strategically dismember your friends in our all new multiplayer feature!

4986783267_ac385fa445_z.jpg

That’s right, Dead Space 2 will offer its own unique take on multiplayer, which is intensely gruesome and completely grounded in the Dead Space universe and fiction. Dead Space 2 will feature four-versus-four gameplay with an objective based multiplayer, across five unique locations throughout the Sprawl.

Not only will players have the chance to play as the Sprawl Security Team, but they will have a chance to see the other side of the coin and play as the evil Necromorph forces. Players will be able to play as four different Necromorph characters, each with its own unique gameplay style: The Pack, The Lurker, The Spitter, and the newly famous Puker.

In DS2 MP, the Sprawl Security Team will have specific, unique objectives across five different maps which will be focused on eradicating the Necromorph forces and restoring safety across the Sprawl. On the other hand, the Necromorphs must stalk, trap, and devour the Sprawl Security Team and prevent them from completing their mission.

Dead Space 2 multiplayer will also feature an entire level progression metagame in which players will unlock new weapons, suit skins, weapon upgrades, as well as gameplay characteristics that will build on the core mechanics of each Necromorph.

The Dead Space 2 team is hard at work right now, and we’re focused on shipping a phenomenal multiplayer experience for all of the fans. We’re really looking forward to getting it in your hands on the 25th of January!

Get the Isaac Clarke Look With a Dead Space Rig Bag

s far as game-related apparel and merchandise is concerned, Dead Space has to be one of the coolest franchises to offer its own tie-in paraphernalia. That said, we're not entirely sure what to think of this new Dead Space rucksack, which has been meticulously replicated from Isaac Clarke's Engineering Rig outfit he sports in the game.

So, as you'd expect, there's a health bar running down the spine (so you'll never need to visit a doctor again) and a stasis meter on the side, and its finished in Clarke's fetching rusty orange with moulded detailing, as modelled in the first Dead Space.

The Dead Space Rig Bag comes with adjustable, padded shoulder straps and waist buckle with a moulded back panel to make running from Necromorphs as comfortable as possible. It's also constructed from high quality 'rip stop' nylon, so those spiky Necromorph attacks will put the bag through its paces.

There are six separate pockets too, perfect for storing your Line Rack, Ripper and Plasma Cutter ammo as well a few nodes.

If you pre-order it from the Dead Space Apparel Store between now and September 23rd for a returnable $40 deposit, you'll also get 3 exclusive mini lithograph art cards and an exclusive T-shirt. Pre-orders are being taken for the Dead Space Rig Bag now, which will be $108 when it releases in January 2011 to coincide with the launch of Dead Space 2 in the same month.

Dead Space Extraction: Hands-on (and Limbs off) with PlayStation Move

EA’s Tokyo Game Show event was stuffed with more games than we could count, but when we saw the first playable build of Dead Space: Extraction running on the PS3 with PlayStation Move, Rey and I made a beeline for Visceral Games’ upcoming horror shooter, which is a prequel to the original Dead Space.

4999913068_77b64dc007_z.jpg

Playing Dead Space: Extraction on PlayStation Move makes for a fine demonstration of the motion controller’s precision and versatility. Aiming is quick and accurate with virtually no discernible lag: small, subtle movements of your wrists translate precisely on-screen, giving you the feeling of aiming with a computer mouse. One nice touch: twisting your wrist 90 degrees to the left or right will flip your Plasma Cutter’s firing plane from horizontal to vertical, which can help you find the ideal angle for snipping off arms, legs, tentacles, and other protrusions of the vile Necromorphs. There are other weapons, of course, including a Rivet Gun and a Force Gun, and the “wrist twist” will activate their alternate fire modes as well.

4999310105_31f1f309ea_z.jpg

Using the PlayStation Move, you fire your current weapon with the T button (aka the trigger). Pressing the Move button activates a quick Telekinesis blast, which you can use to pick up ammo and items hidden throughout the environments — or use to hurl objects at the marauding Necromorphs. It’s your choice! Melee attacks are gesture based: you press and hold Circle, then rapidly slash back and forth to fend off nearby Necromorphs. Melee isn’t much use for inflicting damage, so think of it more as a way to dissuade nearby enemies.

4999309879_e02c332242_z.jpg

The game also looked extra sharp running in HD, with moody lighting effects and a rock-solid framerate. This build of Dead Space: Extraction primarily showed off the Challenge mode, a survival-type arena where players can battle ever-toughening hordes of Necromorph grotesqueries. Dead Space fans already know that strategically dismembering the Necromorphs is a valuable tactic, and this is doubly true in the Challenge mode if you want to beat your partner’s score. Other details abound. Dead Space: Extraction will be compatible with the DualShock 3 controller (for you old-school types) and will also feature optional support for the PlayStation Move navigation controller, though it’s not required.

Dead Space: Extraction will ship on the Dead Space 2: Limited Edition Blu-ray disc on January 25th, and will be available separately as a PSN download. Once we land back in the States, we’ll by syncing up with the Visceral Games team to get a deeper look at Dead Space: Extraction on the PS3.

Visceral Games keen to make Dead Space 3

Visceral Games’ Steve Papoutis has revealed that the developer has got a pretty clear idea of where to take the Dead Space franchise beyond the series second instalment, though was quick to note a potential follow-up would be contingent on how well Dead Space 2 performs.

Speaking during an interview with Eurogamer, Papoutis commented, “We’ve mapped out where we’d like to go with it.”

“Not at a super high level of detail. But, for instance, we’ve just released our novel, Martyr. We’ve talked about the inception of the Unitology religion." "We’ve thought about it all. But ultimately, just like with Dead Space 2, we have to have the support from the players in order to do it.”

The Dead Space 2 producer went on to highlight the fact the sequel was a no-brainer thanks to an 'outpouring of support,' and that Visceral is working around the clock to ensure Isaac Clarke's latest horror fest delivers the goods in order to get the green light on Dead Space 3.

“Nobody’s going to just let you go and do another game just because. You have to have the people that are interested in it."

“That was what was great about Dead Space 2. There was such an outpouring of support that it was easy for us to get the company behind it and give us the opportunity to make it."

“We’re working really hard to make sure this game’s better so we get a chance to do Dead Space 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10 and 20.”

Dead Space 2 is scheduled for release on January 28.

Pre-order Dead Space 2 and get Dead Space: Ignition free

Electronic Arts has revealed that Dead Space: Ignition will be made available for free to gamers who pre-order their copy of hotly anticipated Survival Horror romp Dead Space 2.

The publisher confirmed that the pre-order incentive will be applicable to “participating retailers in North America.”

The game's executive producer, Steve Papoutis, commented: “Dead Space fans are hungry for more Necromorph action and we’re thrilled that they don’t have to wait until January to get their fix.”

“Dead Space Ignition will show fans what happens in the hours leading up to the beginning of Dead Space 2 with gameplay that is fast-paced and accessible. It’s a fun way to dig deeper into the fiction, while allowing core fans to give Isaac Clarke an edge in Dead Space 2.”

Dead Space: Ignition will be hitting PlayStation Network in North America tomorrow, with a European launch following on Wednesday. Dead Space 2, meanwhile, hits store shelves in January 2011.

Dead Space Ignition on PSN Tomorrow

Hi everyone, today we announced that Dead Space Ignition will be available for download starting tomorrow, and it will be completely free for anyone who pre-orders Dead Space 2. This makes the launch even more exciting for us, and I’m happy to have the chance to tell you more about it.

5070366299_e937700aee_z.jpg

When we created Dead Space we wanted to establish a living, breathing, and terrifying universe. As we built this universe, we used the comic series and animated feature to expand the core story from the game. We’re taking this to the next level with Dead Space Ignition.

We’re excited about Dead Space Ignition because it brings the franchise to downloadable arcade games for the very first time, with a completely new experience. By combining interactive comic storytelling with three unique arcade games, we can tell a new Dead Space story in a fast-paced, accessible manner.

Before Isaac Clarke begins his adventure on The Sprawl in Dead Space 2, a Necromorph outbreak occurs, and Dead Space Ignition lets you witness the horror first-hand. And you’ll be able to choose your own adventure along the way, as Ignition offers four unique endings.

5070971498_56020a7535_z.jpg

You’ll play as Franco Delille, an Engineer on The Sprawl. Along with his partner Sarah Andarsyn, he’ll travel to multiple locations trying to contain and survive the Necromorph outbreak. At the end of each story segment you’ll need to complete one of three different hacking games in order to progress.

These three games are called Hardware crack, System Override and Trace Route. Hardware Crack is a puzzler where you must align lasers to complete circuits on a grid, using items such as reflectors and projectors in order to crack through broken control panels. System Override turns tower-defense games on their head, and places you on the offensive. Send your viruses into the system to override the core, timing your attacks to defeat the antivirus and take control of the system. Finally, Trace Route is a sidescrolling race where you run your electrical signal through the system, avoiding security hazards and racing against countermeasures to access the core.

5070366181_b1056e27d2_z.jpg

By playing Ignition, you’ll be rewarded with unlocks in Dead Space 2, so you can give Isaac a bit of an edge – and trust me, he’s going to need it. In addition to several helpful items, you’ll unlock the exclusive Hacker suit and a matching Hacker weapon skin for Isaac.

5070971704_9c38496978_z.jpg

The story, the hacking games, and the exclusive unlocks for Isaac make Ignition a great way to experience the events leading up to Dead Space 2. However, as I mentioned earlier, the most exciting news about Dead Space Ignition is that we are offering the entire game for free to anyone who pre-orders Dead Space 2. So if you are a Dead Space fan, it’s pretty much a no-brainer.

I got through Ignition last night and some of those mini games were tough. The animation was pretty bad and the games were difficult, but also a bit boring and repetitive. I stuck through to get my suit for Dead Space 2 . I guess I shouldn't complain since it was free, but it was a bit too much just to get the suit.
