Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming's "Powers" looks to finally be headed to TV. Deadline reports that an hour-long drama based on the comic book will be Sony's first original series on its PlayStation gaming and media platform -- a Netflix-esque move to further the brand by expanding into original content.
The order is reported to be "around 10 episodes." No cast or start date has been announced, but Deadline says the show is "expected to be of premium cable quality."
A "Powers" TV series has been in development for years, with a pilot produced in 2011 for FX. That pilot, starring Jason Patric as Christian Walker and Lucy Punch as Deena Pilgrim, was not picked up, but the show remained in development. Novelist and comic book writer Charlie Huston was reported last year to have written a new pilot, which is the version of the show slated to debut on the PlayStation Network. Huston and TV veteran Remi Aubuchon are set to serve as showrunners.
"Powers" production company Circle of Confusion has prior success with a TV show based on a comic book series: AMC's massively successful "The Walking Dead." Circle of Confusions's David Engel, David Alpert and Lawrence Mattis will executive produce along with Bendis, Oeming, Huston, Aubuchon and "Justified's" Michael Dinner.
First launched in 2000, Bendis and Oeming's "Powers" has been one of the most enduring and successful creator-owned comics in the recent era. Originally published by Image Comics and since 2004 a part of Marvel's creator-owned imprint Icon, the series stars detectives Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, who investigate superpower-related homicides.
